It just doesn't get much more regal and passionate than that! Lulli has an amazing gift for injecting passion and emotion into what would otherwise be a boring, two dimensional, black and white, royal ego trip. Lulli's music gives true meaning to the word majesty!

The king moves himself very slowly and with little gestuality because in this occasion he must show that he is the sun, the king and the power. Power and majesty are static and solid as the absoutism of his reign and his will: he is not in need of acrobatic moves in this marvellous allegory of the absolute monarchy. Who controls the world let the other take the moves for him as Mr Farruggia said.

I really like the guy playing Hermes and describing the dance in the first scene. His voice and attitude is very fitting. Is he based on a true person/role from the Ballet de la Nuit? Was it normal declaring the events of the ballet out loud during those times? I sure hope so, because it was really quite neat!

I love this movie. The problem is that it's clear that the actor who plays Louis can't dance to save his life so he just stands there looking fierce and occasionally moves a hand. On the rare occasion that yoyu see an actual dance move, it's undoubtedly a "stunt dancer" who is doing it. Could use more actual dancing that looks as it did at the time.

The film was interesting, but Louis XIV was an excellent dancer as a youth. He didn't just stand there posing and waving his arms. It's a shame to do a film called "The King Dances" with such a poor understanding and representation of 17th C dance.

You have to keep in mind both the fact that he is supposed to symbolise the sun in this dance - he is the powerful centre, controlling all the other parts. Baroque ballet is also something very different than modern ballet.
