Le musicien Jean-Baptiste Lully se souvient de sa vie. Dès 1653, il a su s'attirer les bonnes grâces du futur Louis XIV (à l'époque encore sous la coupe de sa mère, la régente Anne d'Autriche) en composant un ballet qui mettait en valeur ses talents de danseur. Si bien que lorsque Louis prend le pouvoir en 1661, il nomme Lully surintendant de la musique. Ce dernier ne cessera de concevoir des chorégraphies pour magnifier le Roi, bientôt surnommé le roi Soleil...

@@HBADGERBRAD Cyrano won't give the same feel when transalted though because it's been written in verses. Translating accurately that kind of work in any other language is impossible. You must keep that in mind while watching!

Ah oui, et pas que dans sa jeunesse. Les deux frères étaient très beaux. L'aîné tenait de sa mère, grand, blond et fort; le cadet après son père, svelte, aux grands yeux bruns. Vers la quarantaine, Louis fut maltraité par un chirurgien maladroit qui, au lieu de simplement lui extraire une dent, lui arracha la moitié de sa mâchoire supérieure, ce qui causa une infection buccale à la suite de laquelle il perdit toutes ses dents l'une après l'autre. Cela entamait sérieusement sa beauté. On peut voir sur ses portraits qu'à partir de là, son aspect changait de l'homme viril à une sorte de petite vieille femme, la bouche creuse. Aussi, les deux frères mangeaient comme des ogres, suite à la faim qu'ils avaient eue durant leur enfance difficile; donc ils prenaient tous deux un sérieux enbompoint, ce qu'on trouvait charmant à cette époque, mais ce que nous trouvons moins beau aujour d'hui. Louis est devenu diabétique et en est mort finalement. Philippe est mort d'une crise d'apoplexie, ce qu'on appelle de nos jours "un accident vasculaire cérébral". le cholestérol, vous savez...

Not Thors helmet. Only modern cartoon Thor wears such a helmet. In this context, it’s more likely it depicts the narrator as a Classical Greek/Roman figure, especially since Louis XIV is Apollo. A person with more knowledge of the ballet might be able to say the exact character.

This is very well done. Ironic about him loathing Italian "manners" as his grandmother was Marie de' Medici, and if he meant "vices" his brother was probably the most fabulous practitioner of modern history.

"Vices italiennes" or sometimes "moeurs italiennes" was period slang for homosexuality. Yes, both Louis's brother Philippe and Lully were what we would call bisexual. Contrary to popular belief, it was tolerated at the time so long as it was discreet (you couldn't marry or walk down the street holding hands). Philippe and some of his lovers were an exception as the queen Anne of Austria was very keen to ensure that Philippe didn't pose a threat to Louis' rule by making him as "womanly" as possible. She would often dress him up as a girl. Louis turned a blind eye to the homosexuality of some of his friends for a long time. It was his marriage to Madame de Maintenon who was a devout catholic in later life, which saw him become less tolerant especially when some of Lully's affairs were somewhat less discreet.

Petit budget : les dialogues et les acteurs sont à la hauteur d'un téléfilm. Le sujet était bien choisi mais trop d'imperfections. Il donne envie de revoir Ridicule encore une 100aine de fois.

You can watch the French series entitled Versailles too. The plot also takes place at Versailles during the reign of the same king, Louis XIV. It is available in English too.

Je me souviens avoir vu ce film en salle avec ma copine de l'époque. Le film avait eu un avis favorable dans la presse chez nous surtout parce que le réalisateur était belge. J'avais adoré ! Elle avait détesté. On a continué a discuter un peu après le film et c'est ce soir là que je me suis rendu compte, grâce à ce film, après 2 ans de relation, que cette fille et moi n'avions rien en commun :)

A lot of French court culture at the time was about an aesthetic union between Classical civilization, poly-theistic and pagan, with the prevailing Catholic culture of the time. This trend was especially strong in the arts; dance, music, drama, so it doesn't surprise me you are getting that vibe.

Гениальный король! Гениальный композитор! На обоих дунул Бог! Не было на свете и не будет равных им! Я думаю : почему мне иногда бывает грустно, когда я слушаю музыку Люлли или думаю о Луи 14? Теперь поняла : это тоска по прошедшему Великому времени, Великому королю, Великой музыке. С тех времён музыка сильно деградировала, как и люди.

fun fact, this isn't an artistic interpretation of events, this literally happened like that making the Fronde nobles dance in submission, though I think he was a bit older when it happened. it also is the reason he is known to this day as the sun king.

Stephie, when I was in Czech Republic-it was going on the TV Art Channel. Otherwise it’s very difficult to find it. Maybe Amazon? But I’m afraid - only the European market. But try!
