Since the batteries were discharged when you started, the stuff that didn't melt is almost certainly lead sulfate. Lead-acid batteries convert metallic lead and lead oxide to lead sulfate when they discharge. Charged cells might actually have given you more lead to melt ;-)

Yep, and there's going to be a fair amount of lead oxide in there too. It would increase the yield to smelt it and reduce those back to metallic form.

Very interesting a unique way to get it done I save the acid and reuse it two thumbs up my friend thank you for sharing

From an economic viewpoint, the lead yield is very low due to the crumbly lead oxide and it makes more sense to sell the battery and buy good lead with the money. From a practical viewpoint, the battery plates can add start smoking after exposure to air and the acid gets on everything. You also need to properly dispose of the waste From a casting viewpoint, battery lead creates a deadly gas when you melt it and it is the wrong alloy for typical casting purposes (bullets, sinkers, etc) since it has calcium in it instead of antimony. Every time you melt it, you run the risk of poisoning yourself and others if they collect the lead later and use it unknowingly. Just sell the batteries to the recycler and buy or find pretty much any other source of lead.

in my country scrap lead acid battery costs 0.80 cents per kg, but pure led costs 12 USD per kg (at local "e-bay") in ingot presentation of unknown purity. So, you can calculate a potential profit. This profit is tiny compared to "maximum" profit you can make in this business. Just imagine that a pure sodium metal is selling for 2 USD per gram (ampoule) , while NaCl (table salt) costs about 30 USD per ton from a wholesale warehouse. Just google "most expensive compound" or "most expensive material" so you can imagine how high the profit can be. But of course, for a guy who sits and watches TV every night , doesn't have any knowledge of chemistry, physics, machining, CNC routing, industrial processes, programming, electronics, and etc and etc... it is better to buy it. Keep buying, while we will keep making money on your need. That's how it works.

@@absolute___zero If a battery weighs about 15kg, you would get $12 by scrapping it with no work according to your numbers. If you melt the battery down, you'll get about 10% of the weight in lead out of it (source: I have done it). Therefore, you'll only get about $18 from the pure lead after dealing with cutting that battery apart, spilling acid everywhere, neutralizing the acid before the plates start smoking, breaking the crumbly lead out of the plates, and then melting the scrap lead down into ingots. Now you have to deal with clean up and hazmat disposal. It's just not worth it. Plus as I previously mentioned, it is the wrong alloy of lead for bullets or sinkers.

You can flux the lead with wax to help clean it up. The carbon in the wax will also reduce any lead oxide back into lead metal. There are videos that show fluxing with wax in lead recovery, it does flame up.

I did it several times with car batteries just to get the electrolyte to make sulphuric acid, but the lead content went straight to the foundry, still ends with a lot of waste at the bottom, but the lead is all out 👍

So scrappers out, this isn't worth doing, plus most lead acid batteries use a mesh which is very brittle so just sell them to the scrap yard

You think after all those years of being under British occupation they would be able to pronounce it as lead instead of leed.

Here's a hint to all you people who want to do this it's cheaper to recycle the battery take the money from that battery go by lead from your Metals place that's used for about 30 cents a pound then melt that down pull your ingots you will get Triple the amount of lead I get anywhere from 3:00 to $5 a battery that's 6 to 10 lb of lead I usually get about 1 or 2 lb of scrap between that and the rest is pure lead weigh more than what you get out of a battery
