Today on Past Gas is the insidious story of how GM scientists developed a type of gasoline that caused insanity, sickness, and maybe even murder. This story is so devious that it might feel like a cheap dime store novel, but everything we’re going to tell you is true. Why was lead added to fuel in the first place? Who was the scientist behind it? How did the American government let this happen? And did leaded fuel actually lead to an increase in serial killers?! Let’s find out.

Kristina brings a good feel to the podcast. Should bring her on more often. Best description of what octane does… it measures the resistance to ignition. The higher the compression the higher the heat. Like a diesel that uses compression (heat) to ignite. Lower compressions need less resistance. I had a 92 S10 blazer, with the 220 horse CPI 4.3. This engine was tuned for 87 octane. When I would put 94 octane in it, it ran a little worse and lost 3 MPG.

I'm not an ancient roman but the word plumbing derives from Plumbum (literal latin for Lead). Also I don't think they knew it was that bad because it was common to add lead to the wine, to sweeten it (lead acetate) among many other uses. In fact bones have been found with an average of +14 mg lead/deciliter of blood. Much more than the 5 mg you mentioned as today's limit.

Great job! I've been a fan since old science garage with Bart. New to the podcast, but I've binged almost all within 2 to 3 months. I enjoy the entire crew. James is always a blast. Joe always has hilarious input. I love how Nolan is the groups voice of reason & keeps everyone grounded. Big fan of Zach and Jeremiah as well. Oh, and Christine was a cool and funny addition as well. Keep up the good work 👏🏽

I believe Midgely was hospitalized for lead poisoning was _because of_ his stunt, when he washed his hands in leaded gasoline to demonstrate its "safety." Also, the only mitigating factor that I concede to these people is that it actually wasn't really widely known that toxic materials work their way through the environment and up the food chain. People operated under the mistaken assumption that you would need to have much more direct contact with harmful stuff, like lead, to receive negative effects. Even with that consideration, though, they are still culpable and horrible, corrupt examples of the wondrous benefits of raw capitalism.

I did an Egr/vacuum delete in my 97 Nissan Hardbody, after putting headers on it, in idle the RPM’s bounce from 1500-2k constantly .. it’s really embarrassing at stop lights 😅 it’s a Ka24e , any ideas?

Veritasium's video about unleaded gas/Midgely I think pairs really with this episode. He goes more in depth about the science/chemistry side of it. If you liked this ep. check the video out here, kzfaq.info/get/bejne/f7xjl9F939rMdHU.html Also Kristina (spelling) was a great add!

I know I'm gonna be in the minority here but I actually like when James gets ocassionally replaced. He's a great character and without him donut wouldn't be what it is, but I feel with him on the podcast it gets a bit distracting with the jokes that take you out of the story.

@@justinaug9879 this episode had jokes. I'm not against the jokes just imo he sometimes hijacks the story with his jokes where as in this episode that didn't happen.

I get you man, it feels like sometimes there’s a bit too much emphasis on trying to be funny and not the story. There’s been a few times where Nolan has been cut off for some stupid joke that didn’t really need to be there and then it picked back up in a different place. Don’t get me wrong the humour makes the podcast but find there’s a balance and they don’t always hit it

Not sure if this was in there (sorry... got called away) but prop planes are still using leaded fuel. According to Engineering Explained, tests actually show people living in communities near small plane airports have lower than average IQ. Crazy that nothing has been done about that.

Turbocharged engines are low compression, however under boost, cylinder pressure is drastically increased, and this is why you need higher octane. N/A racing engines are higher compression to increase combustion pressures and power.

What Joe brought up at 33:29 reminds me of the story of Romania: in '66, the monarch banned abortion... with a very similar 23-year offset, 1989 saw that same ruler violently overthrown, by the generation born of the unplanned, unwanted, and future-dreams-destroying pregnancies of Romania's women. Were it not for the ham-fisted attempt to raise birthrates by official fiatwould otherwise have not progressed into becoming people. The burden of all the extra mouths to feed was a huge factor in tanking the Romanian economy... and in pulling Romania into the generally dystopian mess that would inspire violent rejection of the inept, self-absorbed, kleptocratic ruling class.
