he Labour Party does not have a great track record in government and targeted the most vulnerable in our society the last time they were in power. They cut Gardai numbers, forced through painful social protection payment cuts to lone parents, raided pensions, cut the state pension to some women who had taken time out to look after their children, increased the medicine charge from 50 cents to €2.50, reduced the winter fuel allowance by six weeks, cut the electricity allowance, removed the telephone allowance, removed the death grant, removed the bin allowance and Christmas bonus, reduced welfare payments for under 25s, brought in a property tax and done their best to bring in water charges etc, to name but a few things.

Don't worry we didn't forget what they did and labour will stand no chance in the next election.

The trajectory of this Leader is sure and certain, and it's downward.

The sound bites are well chosen - the fixing of the housing crisis bit was especially easy on the ears. “Go Ivana” I was thinking I was all in until the charade of “Free GP Care” soundbite was delivered. It’s a falsity, a contradiction, a sure sign of non-joined up thinking and a failure to understand the basic metrics of demands on HSE/GPs versus resources available. A failure to understand the limits and capacity within our healthcare system. Yes. Free medical cards is great for gathering votes. But the sad corollary of this is actually more visits to ED for the elderly i.e. in complete contradiction of her soundbite on looking after the elderly in the community! The proven consequence of “free GP cards” is that younger & less sick children clog up extra visits in a finite system. The elderly can wait…. or go to the ED! In fact total GPs were down in number last year. Also so much healthcare [eg. Chronic disease management] has been transferred from hospitals to GPs that there are less visits for acute care and same day or “near same day” GP visits available (like the good old days) that the patients simply go to the ED. They can’t wait 1 or 2 weeks for a GP appointment. Some don’t even bother calling their GP anymore knowing what that wait will be. So, yes, wonderful vote gathering sound bites - like what we have seen with Leo & Simon - sad to see Labour at the same game. Health needs to be thought through properly. Sound bites such as these are part of the problem, not the solution!

I am from Liverpool across the water, the 26 Counties are regrettably reactionary and right leaning. It must be very frustrating that you can not have a majority Labour Government in the 26 Counties.

To the contrary - the argument exists that Irish Labour's woes are down entirely to their participation in right-wing governments over the years, with the austerity measures and neoliberal economics that inevitably follow. It's not really possible for a party to argue for socialism if they keep facilitating capitalism as intended.

@@mike_mcgbExactly. Post 2011, in the aftermath of the banking crisis, Labour rode into power with FG, only to then renege on pretty much everything they supposedly stood for, by facilitating policy decisions that preyed on the most vulnerable, while simulaneously trying to gaslight the public into believing that they were doing the opposite. They became more establishment than the establishment, and people in Ireland will never forget it. The mask dropped, and people here view them as CCC's, Credit Card Commies, who espouse workers rights while wanting all the baubles of the high life. In a similar fashion to how the Green Party are referred to as watermelons, under cover marxists using the mask of protecting the environment to gain power for tyrannical purposes.

@@mike_mcgb I am a Socialist ... I was in the G.B. Labour Party (they set me up and kicked me out) As a local councillor i made many great Socialist interventions in my community of Wavertree in Liverpool for groups and Individuals. I was voted in under The Labour Flag (as you said a neoliberal one) However I put Socialism into practice ... without being voted in, you can not do anything. Over in The 26 Counties (I'm a Nationalist) the two right wing Fina parties have control (Similar to the English Home Counties) and Labour have No Chance of gaining a Majority Government. So when they have been invited into a coalition Government, they had a "chance to serve" Lets hope the next Election is a Labour Sinn Fein coalition ... and further down the line you will have "A Nation, Once Again!"

@@merseydave1 Fair play to you for the interventions you undertook for your community - that's what it's supposed to be about. Ireland's Labour Party, on the other hand, faces a deficit of trust among the people it was founded to serve, specifically because of its actions in a number of coalition governments involving the Civil War parties you describe. Its most recent foray into government saw them disproportionately place the burdens of austerity on those least able to bear them. Powerless outside of government, they claimed... then supposedly powerless inside of government, they argued. It's been proposed that Ireland's Labour party apologises for its actions - until it does, picking up support for a coalition with SF is unlikely. As for "a nation once again"... that will come in its own time, and it'll be a broad, civil-society effort. It'll have to be.

@@martinkingston1498 Ireland's Green Party are about as 'Marxist' as Labour. That is to say, not in the least.
