What a great video… you MUST own your “suckyness” because everything worth doing will require you to start before you are ready. And everyone goes through it 👍🏻

Amazing and informative video Makeda!👏 Being a first-time manager is tough. Sometimes it feels like there are a million things to consider, a million things to get done and a million ways of managing people! But, with a little time, trial and error and confidence, you’ll get to where you need to be! 🚀

Thank you! More managers need to hear this exact thing that it is something that you can get better at and that there will be hard days. I don't typically love to use the words 'trial and error' because I don't want people to think they can wing something that includes people lives BUT I do understand what you are saying. If you do your best and try and do what you can to learn it's simply growth.

Thank you Makeda I’m going to be using more of your resources. I’m a first time supervisor; it’s been 3 weeks and 3 weeks feels like 3 years.

Hi Makeda, I am always fascinated by how these videos come up at like the best time. I wanted to share my situation and hopefully you have a video that explains what happened in my role as manager. I was hired as a front office supervisor and from the beginning it was clear that whom was hiring me did not have time for the team ans they needed someone to coach and mentor them. I was told a lot of personal things about their performances right from the beginning of the interview process. The pay was amazing the company was great some turn over but nothing too crazy. I was told the position was not hybrid but that agains the ceo request he had decided to keep it hush hush that the team had been made hybrid to work from home once or twice a week. I thought ok, interesting. Once I was there I trained 1-1 and immediately pin pointed that there was more than one reason non had been promoted on a 2/5 year period. The team had eight hour shifts each, and about 1.5-2 hours worth of work average on a good day. The rest of the day they all just sat there doing nothing, one particular employee had shared with me that sometimes there is so little to do that all she does is think about why she’s there. Another had been passed up twice on promotion and the other was almost out the door because she was doing some medical degree. They where pleasant to say the least, but there wasn’t much work to do. I was told from the beginning by the team all their hang ups and emotional problems while of course training. I believe I may have made myself too available emotionally but I listened anyway. Long story short I had asked my manager if it was okay to reach out to other departments to see how we could assist. My manager immediately did not follow through on that request. After being there two weeks and me volunteering to do more work for her and anyone else I was given two large projects and before I asked to team to assist I checked to see how they felt about more work and also their load ans how they where feeling. We had discussed that one remote work would end because I didn’t want to be in trouble I’d they found out and two because we could really Joan in on growing individually and see about experimenting with other projects. It sounded like it was a green light, but to my surprise two of them went to complaint to my manager that I had become too personal with their level of comfort on feeling pressured to do more than they where comfortable with, they failed to tell her that on occasions they would make fun of staff on site (I was accidentally emailed) and that one of them would be on the company phone for over an hour. Still I never said anything about their own behavior I was too busy defending and clearing context in which conversations happened. It was a nightmare, I felt so confused because I was being told one thing but another when I attempted anything. I said to myself I’m going to look up videos and see where I can train about leadership more. By the way my undergrad is in leadership. Anyway, after two more weeks my manager walked into my office with another HR rep and gave me notice that I was terminated ans that my job was no longer going to be filled moving forward. I gotta tell you, it was one of the worse experiences I’ve ever had in management. What do you think I could have done different? Are there videos about this sort of situation you’ve elaborated more on? Thank you so much if you’ve read this far, I’m at a loss here.
