It's also a good idea to regularly monitor decibel levels, understand what they mean, and make adjustments accordingly. God forbid that anyone should incur hearing damage as a result of faithfully attending church.

I remember a conversation years ago with a musician on the worship team who played every week. He didnt realize just how loud the band was until a week that he didnt play. After that, the decibel levels started coming down a little.

100% agree about the focus on the word. As someone who was caught in the whirlpool of single focus with music and tech, my heart was what needed to change the most. Not so much the music. If the heart is one with God, then everything else is ran through the filter of the Spirit.

Where the person sits has a huge impact. We frequently get "the music was too loud" and "the music was too quiet" on the same day (!) from people sitting in different locations in the auditorium.

As the saints become more technologically sophisticated, the discussion about "it's too loud" has become more difficult. When "that" guy comes up after service, complaining about the volume, and shows you the SPL app on his phone. "See, it was 105 db!" Because you're an experienced sound tech, you monitored the pro SPL device and know it never got over 95 db. Now you have to explain to "that" guy how the app on his phone is probably inaccurate. Luke's advice about seek to understand first is even more relevant today than ever. Spencer, thanks for having him on your show! On the issue of "changing it up", maybe there's a reason you only have one guitar and one piano. Seasons, my friend. I'm working with a church that lost the entire praise team to COVID, relocations, etc. Right now, worship consists of singing along with music/lyrics videos. Do I want more? Of course. But rather than focus on adding more, I try to focus on excellence using what God has provided.

I've been in bands since high school and have played tons of concerts as well as worship services. I also do production and mixing for various recording projects. So when I'm not leading worship, I frequently find myself listening to the mix. Sometimes it's genuinely too loud and other times it's more of a frequency or imbalance issue. I like a good full sound that really fills the room. But when it gets above a certain level, it just sounds harsh. I remember a Christmas Eve service where the mix was so loud that even the cello sounded harsh. When it's that loud, I don't think it's just a bad EQ decision. Another time, I heard people complaining about it being too loud. But, in this case, they had the drums disproportionately louder than the rest of the mix. So the drums were (in my opinion) too loud, but it made the rest of the mix sound distant in comparison. I would have suggested pulling back the drums a little and then bumping up everything else. Having been behind the scenes for so long, it did bother me sometimes seeing a distain towards anyone who thought the mix was too loud. Basically thinking "oh...they're just old and out of touch", without giving them any consideration.

I think a non-band member who stands in the audience area listening during sound check is important. There were two times where I've been told I was too loud, and both times it was at an outdoor service. On the stage, I could not hear myself, so I turned my amp up. In both cases I was asked to turn down, and for the same reason. We couldn't hear ourselves on stage, but it was too loud in the audience area. We would never know that from being the stage.

Many times when a person says that the volume is too loud, it simply means that the mix is not great and you have some component that is too loud whether it is the bass or the crash or the vocalist in relationship to the music but if the mix is right many times, the complaint of volume will also go away

For the dual piano players, you can have a piano player and a guitar player which gives a nice acoustic feel to songs. If you have the equipment you can go with a keyboard instead of a piano and if capable have the other person play the bass guitar. That combination there can really fill in a song.

As I get older the volume is painful, it's not a " small " thing If someone has to go outside because they cant cope with it then it's not acceptable. Also to sing in tune you need to be able to hear yourself , I dont understand why you wouldn't want to . I used to be on the sound desk, I do understand how invested people are in their work, but now I'm experiencing the other side I understand.

I have stopped going to services because of the volume being too loud. I’ll watch the service on Facebook and even there the balance is off. The worship leader drowns out the others on the worship team. He is unreceptive to any concerns. Not sure how to handle it.

the ones that complain its not loud enough....tend to be the ones who already lost their hearing.

I am in the position of the second question. We have 2 piano players. I play synth, organ and pads and a few other sounds. I play in a different range than the piano player. We don’t run tracks either. Last week was the first time I played aux keys in this church. My previous church was larger and not a lot of musicians. We had 2 keyboards, drums, bass and occasional acoustic guitar lessons. We ran tracks there that filled the space out. So I’ve been in a number of situations like that. In my small church now 200-250 we ran a piano and synth setup. It actually worked out nicely.

I road my motorcycle and visited a church that was so loud I had to put my ear plugs in my ears and as I looked around I saw several people with ear plugs. That and the fog machine told me I wasn't going to be back

Step one: use a decibel meter to see if the volume is at a level that will damage hearing!! There are many sound techs with major hearing loss from years of high volume sets. If you as a sound engineer have hearing loss (or you are squirreled away in a “sound room”) you won’t have an accurate idea of what the level is for the front row. Please consider the hearing challenged and the young tots with fragile ears.

I heard from our fellow that the song is to long and the worship is to long to finish Ang her knee is aching because of standing to long

We deal with this. Bottom line there's only so much you can do, and we have to be able to hear ourselves play, amazingly they don't complain about the loud organ blaring through the pipes for the traditional service, I think they just don't like guitar, drums, keyboard for the contemporary service.

@@elaineajones8499 A significant part of the problem is the idea that when you can’t hear yourself the only cure is to turn your channel up in the monitors. Instead, perhaps turning everything down slightly in the monitor mix instead of raising the volume for your mic keeps the monitor mix from overpowering the house speakers. Monitor mixing is one of the more difficult jobs of the sound tech. Thats why in ear monitor setups have become quite popular. Nothing wrong with modern instruments. Or organs.

Put the speakers behind the band instead of in front of them THEN they’ll know how loud it is! When you have ear plugs available at the desk to use during worship, & the music vibrates your chest & heart I’m certain the music is way, way, too loud. Also the band should be to the side of the congregation not up the front. That will stop a lot of ego trips from happening within the band and perhaps many won’t want to be there at the side. Too many worldly displays of entertainment being displayed in Churches today, especially with regard to praise & worship. It reminds me of going to a Rock Concert!!

What’s wrong with a piano or organ? Is there any real need for higher levels of volume. I’m well aware that there are nuances to “music volume” depending on if one loves, are neutral or detests what is being played. My concern is the abuse of worship music to manipulate the audience, rather than possibe ‘new age’ hypnotism. My belief is worship should be ‘sweet and simple’, not a gig or high power performance.
