I was studying in Japan for a year and I can promise you I tried to look far and wide for people to play with and I literally couldn't find people to play with... I did find a friend group that did play monster hunter world but even they played it once a week. People think Japan is a huge gamer country but in reality, all they do are play mobile games or handheld games so it is really rare to see actual “gamers” in Japan. The problem is that they do school all day on weekdays and then spend most weekends studying more or catching up with friends. Work on the other hand is 24/7... You only have time to “relax” during the end of your work shift. I asked once a friend of mine why they don't play games that much (he liked to play smb) and he said that it's just impossible to compete in the game since if your lucky, you'll get an hour per day to play the game. It makes sense why they don't play league, league simply needs an insane amount of time to learn.

i always found this strange since long academic/study & work hours seem prevalent in not just japan? like how s.korea became the largest region for esports despite that fact. maybe they just developed a different mentality towards games more rapidly as they were a large factor in pioneering esports as an industry?

Japan has always been a console and portable dominated market. It's not a surprise at all considering that Sony and Nintendo (and SEGA) ads from there. PC gaming was never been popular in Japan. The japanese also prefer games with the games with the "journey story" type and fighting games, an e-sport gente were the japanese are very good at, and is not a surprise too, consisting that Street Fighter, Tekken, Smash, Soul Calibur, The King Of Fighters and many other até from there. They are also very good at the still emerging racing e-sport(GT Sport)
@makoy2689
@makoy2689 2 жыл бұрын
The guy above me is absolutely right. The type of games that people play are just different. I don't actually play league of legends at all, I actually play Tekken. And there are so many japanese tekken players, a large chunk of the pro players are from there, and lots of tournaments are held there. Yet in the UK (where i currently live) there is hardly anything as everyone is playing CSGO or league or whatever. So i don't think it's because there isn;t enough time, as tekken and other fighting games take thousands upon thousands of hours and many years to get good at, it's just that the type of games that are played are completely different,

@@nilmerg your missing a point, which is a huge difference in JP and SK. Both treat gaming as a cultural norm, but apply it vastly different. This is a common misconception in the west, where they lump all gaming as 1 thing. For JP and SK difference its the inverse. JP is a huge gaming culture, but it isn't treated as "gaming". Everyone plays games, doesn't matter how heavy or deep into it. Even if its a once a day for 5 mins log in gacha game, its considered gaming. It almost seen as not gaming in SK eyes. In SK gaming is a past time. An activity to do akin to sports, hanging out, relaxing, etc. It is legitametly a viable option to past time. In both cases, gaming is treated just as a normal thing. It isn't an edged off area. In the west, gaming is very edged off and treated as such. We in the west treat also break it down further with genres, brands, consoles, etc. That is where the misconconception lies. Western gaming vibe, is vastly different from foreign ones. That includes indifference of varying asian countries. To put it simple, your being racist without realizing your racists. Japan and Korea are 2 very different places, and that is why it doesn't make any sense to you why they are different. You think they are the same, simply asian. Deep down, you are racists and its okay to be that way. I am not calling you out for being racists. I am more calling you out for being less informed of the cultural differences. I hope you have a great day, if you read my essay LUL.

@@yummychips_ what the hell. i was understanding some of your points to a degree, but then you devolved to assuming i'm racist so out of left field. i've been exposed to a lot of japanese culture since childhood, & as a result, have learned many nuances, such as how they approach & perceive video games. with SK, i was often intrigued by the culture at a certain point & wondered if that tied into their gaming perception as well. i never once assumed they were the same, & i was making it a point that they in fact are NOT the same, but i was wondering what would have influenced those differences. considering south korea essentially exemplified that eSports can be a competitive + business asset by making tournaments worth something. that would have played a major role in the development of many korean companies investing in teams that can compete, especially globally. in contrast, despite people in both japan & SK being known to work & students study long hours, japan is the one with a gaming culture that sort of adapts to that. mobile games are very popular because they can be played on the go as opposed to sitting down and playing a game, which they often don't have time to do. that isn't to say that SK doesn't have its fair share of mobile games (KakaoGames), but you don't really see the competitive investment one can find in SK. if you gathered that i'm racist from all this, you just gotta be trolling or have the worst reading comprehension.

Really great video! I'm a Vietnamese and I gotta say, you POV about the Vietnamese players is accurate. Whenever we play a match, there will always Yasuo or Lee Sin in in our team or the enemy. Like the 10 matches that you play, 9 of them will definitely have Yasuo. That makes the new players who want to practice those champions have problem. To be honest, that became like a common thing in our country. It appeared for so long that nowadays, most players aren't surprise about it lol. Anyway in my opinion, Vietnam has the highest rate of picking Yasuo. For Lee Sin, well I don't see as much as Yasuo.

That's not really my analysis at all, but kay. IMO one of the noted strengths of the culture is that they tend to like excelling at hobbies just for its own sake. The Japanese take the concept of Wu-wei and really run with it all the way to touchdown. It's very much a cultural aesthetic. Case in point: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jd13f5eLxMW5lpc.html They also tend to burden themselves more on an individual basis, since there tends to also be more pressure to perform in Confucian and Neo-Confucian cultures. Korea isn't much different in this respect. This isn't always healthy since individuals tend to blame themselves for problems too much and creates a culture of individual shame. (This is a "you" problem, when it's actually not.) So the Japanese are more likely to be the type to try and suffer everything in silence. Our internet culture has adopted this gamer-bro nihilism that construes sincerity and anger is a sign of weakness. Because emotions are gay or something. To be too invested in something is weakness. It's an infuriating attitude. And you often see accusations that good players are just exerting effort and taking the game too seriously, when the reality is just that they're just very practiced and having fun in their own way.

I'm so glad a relatively popular KZfaq covered this. I've been playing for a very long time and after hitting challenger, it just didn't feel good or real. Plus the queue times were over 200 minutes at times and the players you get are astounding lower ranked. What ended up happening is a sort of elitist group being formed. "Scrims" we called it. Where challengers and players who played like challengers (these people were recommended and given a shot in the scrims) were allowed to be played. Essentially creating custom games with an invite only policy for the players we believed were the top. After that, that's all that we played. Our ranks decayed and challengers were no long challenger, diamonds were plats, vice versa. But we had a significant number of people who are trusted to perform as the best the server had to offer. It was elitist, but it was the only working system because of the lack of care from both Riot and Garena. Toxicity, lack of punishment, queue times being ridiculous, servers being unstable (and thus we can pause in customs). Even worse when Garena merges servers, which deleted tons of accounts and erased loads of progress on the servers that was being taken in. It's disrespectful and it's no wonder that this is probably the most toxic server of all the League servers. And I have zero faith in either company to fix it because if there's anything about SEA based Esports and competitive games that I learnt (having worked in it), it's that if it's not mobile, nobody fucking cares about you. Just your money.

Japanese people typically don't like conflict and toxicity. They play games and watch television to unwind after a hard day at work. Sitting down and playing League of Legends is the antithesis of this goal. People behave on League in a way you could never imagine 99% of the people I've met while in Japan behaving. That kind of high-stress, toxic cesspool is like pure repellent for most Japanese.

@@Squidmoto3 worst mindset ever, yes obviously if you try to win/lose as fast as possible you’ll see some form of result quicker. Why does that matter though? It doesn’t actually take long at all to climb, and spending an extra 20 minutes for a chance to gain instead of lose could be profitable. Let’s say you ff 15, and then it’s another 5 minutes before you find another match. Say you lost 15 lp. 20 min for -15. Next game lasts 25 min and you gain 25. 45 minutes for a net profit of +10 isn’t good compared to the chance of having +50 net profit if you merely spend an extra 10 minutes trying to carry your team in the first game. Anyone that believes forfeiting at 1st sign of enemy advantage is a reasonable strategy to climb has been gimping themselves. Of course there are games where winning/carrying is practically impossible. But I see it all the time, people start acting like pessimistic little shits at the first hint of defeat. It’s pathetic.

Believe me. I server transferred from NA to JP, because I got a job there for a year. Playing on NA was just unbearable with random spikes up to 300ms. I speak Japanese fluently, and was pretty confident it won't be a problem to communicate on JP server. Guess what. The number of actual Japanese people playing is lower than the other SEA country anime fans. And it's a hell TBH. Every single match was like "Should I use English or Japanese?", "Hope they understand at least the pings" situation. Because of this, most of Japanese, who takes the game seriously plays on KR server. And the server population is bad AF. Every queue averages around 4 to 5 minutes (and I thought 2 minutes was long, when I was on NA). Also, you know what? There is no Normal Draft. Ranked Flex is in a weird situation where it appears sometimes during times when the players spike, then goes away. Most of the time, you'll only get 2 ways to queue for Summoner's Rift - Normal Blind and Ranked Solo/Duo. Also, Riot's negligence of the feature of changing the text language of the game causes many people to not understand what the items do (you know, the weebs who wanna hear all the Japanese VAs flexing on their skills), or the skills of new/reworked champions etc. And yes, the period of 1 year has passed, and due to COVID I'm back from Japan, and now I can't transfer servers, cuz for some reason Server Trasnfer is always unavailable on JP server just like how it goes down few hours before new patch. Oh yeah, there's only few banks in Japan, which their credit cards work with Riot's RP purchase, and the company issued credit card (which your monthly pay goes in) isn't usable for purchasing video game stuffs either. So you're stuck with either buying a prepaid "WebMoney" card (which isn't guaranteed to be available in nearby convenience stores, or PayPal - which is bugged for the last 2, 3 months, so you literally can't buy any RP to begin with. If you're planning to go for Japan for a short period of time, don't server transfer. Don't. Although the gameplay is interesting. Grasp Jhin, healer Ashe etc. It won't get boring or stale. Basically every match is like a result of a slot machine.

@@Danfy1zx Why would Koreans want to play on the JP server in the first place?

@@eunpyohong4788 I also play on the JP server and agree with Dan, while the Japanese themselves are very very hostile towards China/Korea. Korean players on the server tend to be notably bad.

In Garena, you will only get banned when you are mass reported. As in, you got so toxic, that you end up pissing off everyone in your team and on the enemy team. But since everyone in Garena is super toxic as a norm, such bans rarely happen. If Garena ever implemented stricter rules and punishments to curb toxicity abd bad player behavior our server, half of all the players would likely be banned.
