I can recall how I used to have Facebook and Instagram. It would trigger so much internal anger, bitterness to my peers, frustration towards humanity, jealousy, and depression from endless scrolling and content consumption in these networks. By the grace of God, I deleted it. I have felt so free and light. It was an extra and unnecessary weight in my life - even if my family and friends were on it. I am delighted the whistleblower came through to prove what has been happening. I hope a tremendous and progressive change will happen because I know I am not the only one like that and still is.

@@steviesevieria1868 the problem becomes that what most people sign up for it for is to keep track of what their friends and family are doing. First day of school photos, artistic endeavors, hobbies, etc. But that stuff isn’t as profitable to Facebook as the political stuff, the data aggregation, and the targeted advertising, so they changed their algorithm to limit the ways people actually wanted to use it and prioritized the other stuff. The problem isn’t that we don’t want to use the service, the problem is we want to use it for what it used to be for, and they changed it so it’s harder for us to do that. And they did it much more secretly than they probably should have, which is what the whistleblower’s point is.

This may be anecdotal but I think Twitter's personalized recommendation is worse than Facebook's. It only takes few likes and perhaps few clicks on tweets to fill your entire timelime with that topic you just interested with. If you delve into the topic more, they start to relate it with other topics until your timeline become more homogenous. It's scary how they could drive someone into thinking that everyone on the platform is interested to same topics and have similar opinion to theirs.

Force FB and other media giants to share all content and not own it for market control. I think censorship is a major problem in the world and I worry that social censorship leads to centralized authoritarian governments, the kind we only recently changed in the West after thousands of years of oppressive societies. In some ways, we're going backwards before the Age of Enlightenment by teaching people how horrible the world is, no one has time to learn history and realize what a lie that is. The race, gender and financial equity baiting issues are perhaps more evil than the hateful rhetoric against them found online. Ultimately they lead to a untrusting, divided and centrally controlled society. And I hope everyone who identifies strongly to a side recognizes they are a major part of the problem, regardless how just they believe in their cause.

I despise Facebook with a passion but i recognize bullshit when i see it and this ain't some random thing. Their have been whistleblowers before and the media ignored them. Now they make a 60 minutes show for this lady that btw she is basically saying that Facebook should censor more to keep people "safe". This is the same 60 minutes that was asking the KZfaq CEO why she isn't deleting even more videos and banning more people. And btw all Facebook services just miraculously seem to have an issue conveniently when the whistleblower needed attention. She is a stooge working for the secret services and the ones that made Facebook services come down are the government. It seems they are trying to gain more control and make them censor more(notice how breaking up Facebook was not in the discussion) and make new laws that in reality will destroy the point of entry and cripple other competitors. It may also be that Mark hasn't been as good of boy as it should and they are teaching him a lesson. No matter the reason one thing is for sure. Meanwhile all the headlines are shouting 'bombshell' and 'whistleblower' when the reality is it was neither a bombshell nor was the person in question much of a whisleblower. Just about everything about the story has been known for decades and Facebook is not the only party involved. Ultimately, a “corporation” by its very nature has the goal of “maximizing shareholder profits”. The fascinating history of the entity called a “corporation” is that at one point in our history, a “corporation” had a set time limit on it in order to carry out a specific purpose for the good of the community and then it would be broken up. In this way, these corporations could be formed to carry out larger projects that served the people, without them becoming overly powerful. At some point, those in power at those corporations were able to buy their way in and change laws in order to change the nature of a corporation to one that is essentially equal to an individual. The only way that corporations of any kind will shift is if a significant portion of the population gains enough education that would stop allowing high powered individuals buy their way in to politics. It has to be an issue that gets discussed and voted on. This is neither a Republican issue nor a Democratic issue. It’s a humanity issue. Large corporate interests have the larger plan to eliminate (or drastically reduce) small business. In this way it can snatch up more people into its control. I am for the people! For independence! And for cutting the power of giant corporations because again…. The number one goal of a corporation is (by nature) to MAXIMIZE PROFITS FOR SHAREHOLDERS- in any way possible! And that is not good for humanity.

Are you of the opinion, that Alphabet, Amazon or Facebook do not contribute to humanity still? Would you be willing to not be able to use any of Google's services, buy things on Amazon or connect with people through Facebook? If you'd vote for these companies to be split up, to be nationalized or dissolved, would there be no people left looking to fill this power void? What would replace these companies? How do you regulate tech companies without shifting power from a few powerful people to another bunch of powerful people? It's a complex topic. There is no garuantee that people would be in favor of doing something about these companies even if everyone was as perfectly educated as possible, let alone knowing what exactly should be done. The data leak does not show that Facebook is a bad company overall. More research is needed. I do agree however that better education and awareness would benefit politics in terms of less corruption.

Well said. Even scientific statements which are made after thorough research are heavily debated among scientists. When you bring in topics like politics which is divisive by nature, the difference between information and misinformation blurs. A lot of times people who were silenced turn out to be the real truth seekers. This has happened throughout the history and happening right now as we speak. I too don't know how to feel about this one. I truly believe in freedom of speech but how do you define and deal with "hate speech" or misinformation. When does criticism become hate speech? How deviated should one statement be for it to become misinformation? I know there are people who are actually spreading false statements but a lot of information becomes misinformation because we tend to interpret and remember information differently. Why would they be transparent with he algorithm? To create competition? To let you see something you wouldn't understand? The Facebook algorithm is pretty simple, they sampled subject groups and used triggers to see how minds think. The seconds you spend looking at a picture, if you like, like and comment, not like but comment, what your comment is, how fast you go past an add, who you message when, etc. When you get random ads about things you just talked, it's not that they are listening to your voice, its the algorithm that has calculated that because of what you've previously looked, the milli seconds of this and that, you've been put in a "group" and they can almost perfect know what you'll be thinking about, because the algorithm has calculated you would, that why sometimes the add don't make zero sense, it's because the algorithm miss judged your "class"/"group", but it never stops so eventually it puts you in the right place. An analyst has explained that, it's funny that the individual in the human race are all so different, yet so a like, and that's how they were able to have algorithms like that, because predictability from humans

That is what even facebook wants... Take a look at the Greyzone channel with Ben Nrton and Max Blumenthal. There is a legal issue that make all social media platforme non responsible for the content beeing published. Unlike plublishers who are accountable and can be sued for their publication. This will lead to even greater censurship, auto censorship pf the platforms. These plareforms will have the legal argument for censiring anyone t any time withought any accountability. We are slowly mooving towards full 1984 style governing and we point the finger at China for banning to much video games for kids. This is what Gace Book actually wants... Think about it...

I truly believe that any social interaction with communication which is short handed or acronymed , steno , and doesn't occur in a real time exchange obscures a healthy human interaction such as chat, instant message, Instagram Messenger, etc. So not only Facebook, Twitter too. All these platforms that serve to speed up human connection such as dating sites. Delete empathy and compassion, we forget how not to be inconsiderate of others for example you show up at your friends house and everybody you know is sitting around with their faces in their phones don't even realize you've just walked in to the room. It's making us social retards.

I opted out of so much social media nowadays that it is insane. As it was stated here, I find that the curated posts and automatically pushed articles have been nothing short of a realization for me that these sites' only goal nowadays is to make profits and nothing but profits in the expense of a person's sanity. Which is a shame, I still remember getting on Facebook only to connect with my correspondents and friends who live abroad, but it turned into such a bubble simulator that I opted out and instead I just use it to put in statuses of new life events instead of reading through it on the daily. I wish that companies would return to the wonder and altruism of the 2000's, where the goal was simoly to connect and that's that, nothing more.

Ads don't cost that much, even a billion times, ads probably only pay for the maintenance team and the buildings. All the profit most likely comes from everything else, and when she says Facebook does thing for themselves and not for the people, that's basically every business in the world. I aggressively unfollow anyone who is trying to shove hate and enraging content my way. I'm not there for other peoples' divisive politics so I just unfollow or unfriend as needed, and it's made some relatives very mad at me, but too bad. Looking at my feed now, it looks like I need to do another culling... some meme sites I follow have started pushing stuff I'm not into, to "increase engagement". Facebook is only tolerable when you're very assertive with what it's allowed to send your way, and it still tries to push your boundaries and get you hooked on anger. Don't let it.
