Looked like Right Stuff gasket maker, which isn't petrol resistant. Can't be sure what they used, but I'd be interested to know what they used.

I'd use the grey originally a Ford designed sealant that works great and is oil/fuel resistant. Now a few companies make it. It's a must have in my shop. Of course use simple a little more than a flim of it.

Yeah I built somewhere between 20 and 90 SBC and other assorted GM bottom ends for 6 months in a factory. We did not use silicone for that, we used "monkey snot" which is aircraft glue on a paper gasket.

@@BlcokedAccount I can't for the life of me remember what the brand name was, but it came in a little white can with a brush in the cap. The liquid was dark brown. Sold as aircraft glue though, and that shit'll stick a baptist to a Catholic long enough for them to settle their differences, so be careful not to get it on anything you're not okay with it staying on.

true, but who stocks a rebuild kit these days? Who has one that's ethanol proof?

I have been working on old cars for over 50 years and what I usually run into is "new old stock" and that means stuff that's been sitting on a shelf for 20+ years. A few years ago I bought a fuel pump from a major supplier of Chevy Corvair parts and all they had was the older stuff, despite the fact that they sell dozens each month.
