How about “The Six Sigma Handbook” by Thomas Pzydek & Paul Keller. It’s another reference book, now on it’s fifth edition with the 6th edition coming out later in 2023. I also read, “The birth of Lean” , an interesting insight into the challenges Taichii Onno faced at Toyota introducing Lean, the time it took & how he went about it and the leadership support he had.

Hi Paul, I have two questions. 1) Where is 2 Second Lean by Paul Akers? 😃 2) Yesterday morning I've finished the book "Epiphanized" by Bob Sproull and Bruce Nelson. These guys are seems to be a great fans of The Goal (I didn't read it but it's next in my reading list). What is your view on Theory of Constraints? This book says Lean and Six Sigma are useless until ToC principles are applied and constraint is found. Do you agree with that? Do you apply ToC somehow?

The idea of bottleneck management is really powerful and something i would use. However, if you apply lean first the bottleneck will be clear and stable and managing it so much easier...2 second lean, don't have a copy! I'll order one, thanks!

All the books by Shingo - published by productivity press, I’d also recommend “who moved my cheese” as a short read on how people react and approach change

Hi Simon - yes I have who moved my cheese omitted from my list this time. I have some shingo books, but for soem reason I've never connected with those books as much as others. I'll revisit them now you've mentioned them... thanks!

Hi Paul. Slightly off topic. The minute I mention Lean thinking to any potential new clients their current response is that “Lean has gone out of the window now that I’m having to buy 6 months worth of stock in one go”. Interested to know what your response would be. Thanks!

Well in some respects they are right of course. but one of my clients held 6 months stock off site as raw material and they offered a 12 week lead time! They could have moved that stock into the factory as semi-finished and offered a one week lead time, in that case lean would smash the other company, I don't think lean is dead do you?? By the way Lean doesnt ask you to get rid of stock it asks you to get rid of un-necessary stock. If the current supply chain is that bad then that's OK, but the aim should be to fix that...and then remove the stock...
