Should have joined the orchestra back in high school when I had the chance. Couldn't see dragging such a huge instrument around. Now that I am retired, I am determined to master this wonderful bass voice in all music. It has become somewhat of a badge of honor, as it reminds me of what I could have done and renews my commitment to get it done.

For bass players, I think it's good to try both French and German bow. I played French for years without trying German, and never could get my bow level right and would always tend to curl up my wrist...switching to German really felt natural to me, even though it always looked a bit odd to me until I tried it and adjusted to it.

I was the opposite, when I started playing bass I played German bow, up until my first year of high school when I tried French and really liked it. That also made it easier when I started to learn cello later on haha

These interviews are delightful and so educational for an amateur concert-goer like me.

What a delight to see the double bass section playing plum passages; such passages I didn't even realize were going on as just listening to a recording, playing in an orchestra- possibly missed even looking through the score.

Its real interesting to see the basses on the left, behind the violins

^ The orchestra here is set up in orchestra pit style. Basses in the back left of the conductor, behind the cellos and first violins.

There are 5 String Basses too (I have one) w/ a Low B String & that bypasses the need to have that clunky heavy extension.

"cello can play many more notes" per position. In this case, 'many' = 1. 😂 (i.e. four notes per string in first position) Stretches on cello can actually be quite intractable out of the first position as well, and playing melodies usually involves a lot of shifting and a lot of planning to find a good hand position. It's like bass in that way. We can squeeze an extra note out using thumb position, which I guess bass players also do? In any case, though the cello is tuned in fifths, the scale length is more than twice that of a violin, so we don't have the same kind of agility, though we have a little more than the double bass, apparently.

All-Star Orchestra You can also tune a Double Bass in Fifths (C, G, D, A plus a High E for the 5 String Versions & a Low F for the 6 String Versions eventually) cause Wikipedia said that the intonation will be better in that tuning.

You can't say that French basses are nasals It's fake. All the basses beetwen 1920 And 1980 are totally nasals in France, because of luthiers makers of doublebass were so bad (Quenoil, Mentec..) but If you knew Vuillaume bass, Bernardelle Bass, Jacquet Gand bass from 1850-1900, you couldn't say that. It's not correct to resume French bass to this period of makers. Unfortunately you seem never tried one of this bass. Sorry for you
