Great tutorial! Others on here say to leave the chemical on for only 45 seconds and that is NOT enough! My son was so excited to do this and when we left it on for 45 seconds, the image looks like a smudge on the glass! Thank you Martha for the proper way!!

Hello! The etching cream is meant to be used specifically with glass due to the nature of its chemistry.

never heard of martha stewart's version of this stuff, but i always used *armour etch* that i'd get at michael's. just saying that you might want to check out the prices, cuz that looks like a pretty small bottle for anything other than a small set of glasses. not only that, i don't ever remember *having* to leave the acid on for that long. i haven't done this in years, but as i remember i think i left the stuff on for about five minutes. it's not as if the longer you leave it on the better or deeper etch you get. you should also work the acid in with your brush from side to side, top to bottom and slant-ways. just glopping it on you may get some splotchy results (that's my experience at any rate, but i admit it could have been the quality of the glass. just that when i began to work the cream in instead of gooping it on my results had drastically improved). well, if anyone does this, just don't freak out when you get the etched area wet as it will literally disappear until it dries back out. the last project the wife did was to use her vinyl cutter to make a stencil and made several change jars for gifts from large glass jugs she got at the dollar store. we made some centerpieces for a friend's wedding, and a few x-mas gifts for friends. but, we own a trophy shop so we have a vinyl cutter. before we got the cutter, though, i would do everything by hand using tack paper for cabinets, then cut the stencil with an x-acto knife. one last thing, you can etch on mirrors, too. we don't offer this as a service to customers anymore because it does take quite a bit of time and labour. we did a few jobs and had to charge a lot of money for it, probably more than the customers would have paid had they had it laser engraved. so, if you're looking at this specific process as a business opportunity, i would say find a better process ~ or a ton of customers willing to pay a lot of money, and even then prepare to work for about minimum wage. as fun hobby and for gifts, this is great, though. hope that helps and offers a different perspective. :)

I use Armour Etch and only leave it on for 30 seconds to a minute.
@ryanbarker5217
@ryanbarker5217 7 жыл бұрын
Bonnie Crawford yeah, it doesn't really take long. the instructions say five minutes unless you use rub 'n etch stencils (whatever those are), in which case 60 seconds is all the instructions say you need. as i mentioned, i rather work the cream into the glass with the brush (i usually used those super-cheap foam brushes) to get better results, then let it set for a few minutes while i move onto the next piece. i found that letting it set longer than the five minutes has no benefits. if you can get away with a minute or less, very cool. :)

Can I just wipe down with a wet rag after 15 minutes or do i have to wet the glass? I'm asking because I want to etch the glass of a lantern but don't want to wet the wood. Thank you!
@plaidcrafts
@plaidcrafts 7 жыл бұрын
The suggestion of thoroughly rinsing under running water is to ensure that all etching creme has been removed from the glass. If any product has been left behind, the glass will naturally be etched. Should you not want to remove the excess Martha Stewart Glass Etching Creme under water, be sure to wear protective gloves and wipe over the etched glass several times with wet cloths.

Currently, the etching cream is only meant to eat away at the glass surface, so the results will be white. You can always paint with a sheer coat of sheer Mod Podge, however!

If you use any kind of etching cream on the outside of say like a mason jar can you drink out of it since the stuff is not on the inside? And is this permanent? So it will not come off in the dishwasher or after so many hand washes? Thanks in advanced!

Real Etching Cream like Martha Stewart Crafts Etching Cream does actually etch a glass surface. There is no paint involved so there is no need to be alarmed about food use. Also it is totally dishwasher safe.

you probably can if you use a spray adhesive to keep the edges down. or you can get some clear tack paper like you would line your cabinet with, put that on the surface of the glass, cut your stencil out with an x-acto knife and apply the acid. i used to hand cut my stencils, which was a pain, but it worked.

Are the stencils reusable? How do you take care of them if they are reusable?
@plaidcrafts
@plaidcrafts 7 жыл бұрын
All of Plaids Adhesive Stencils, (FolkArt and Martha Stewart Crafts) are reusable. The best way to use the stencils is to thoroughly clean them after each use and replace the clean stencil back onto its carrier sheet. To clean the stencils, immediately while wet with paint, rinse them well under running water, and blot them dry on a paper towel. These stencils are perfect for use on glass and ceramics as they not only cling to the surface, they are also flexible and will "mold" to the surface. However, they can be used on many other types of surfaces as well! The adhesive may diminish over time after several uses, however, applied heat from a hair dryer will freshen the adhesive on the backside of the stencil.

I bought a bottle I use it once I wiped off the top on top of the bottle it was clear no debris and I cannot open the bottle Martha Stewart's bottles sucks on her etching cream
@plaidcrafts
@plaidcrafts 6 жыл бұрын
So sorry to hear that you experienced difficulty opening your Martha Stewart Crafts Glass Etching bottle. A quick tip if a bottle is ever stuck with a tight lid, turn the bottle upside down and "smack" the bottle lid first flat onto a flat surface. This will create a little pop in the seal and then allow you to open the bottle easily. This trick can be used on any jar lid including acrylic paint or even Mod Podge! Also watch the type of lid that is on the bottle, if it is a push and turn lid, you will need to keep the bottle upright and only push down on the lid and turn while pushing to open the lid.

can you free hand your design with a brush and not use a stencil???
@plaidcrafts
@plaidcrafts 7 жыл бұрын
You can free hand a design and cut it out from a custom sticky stencil sheet. Or else, COMPLETELY tape around your design, and be sure to wear protective gloves when handling the etching cream. Simply free-handing with a brush (by, say, brushing on the cream), may result in a messy design, as the cream must be on in a very thick layer to etch the glass, and the resulting etch might be uneven.
