This is the best Cubase metering video I've seen. And I've seen a few. I suspect a number of users don't realize you can switch to metering the input. Maybe Cubase should show input and post fader side by side on each channel. They'd probably have to reduce the width of each meter 50%, which would be OK. That would eliminate a lot of switching back and forth between input and post fader.

Heh Diego, in the Full-size Console view, enable the left hand inspector and choose the 'Zones' tab. From there, you will see three little dots for every track. From there you can split the mixer int 3 different positions.

Hello. I noticed that in the newer versions of Cubase/Nuendo 12, you can no longer change the colors for meter in channels except the meter in Control Room / Master Out. In previous versions, I remember that you could change the colors of the meter on tracks in the mixer, which was very good for stage gaining. There were 2 boxes in Meter Appearance where you could check both. Channel meter...and Master meter...Has this function been removed or moved elsewhere?
@Featherlightstudio
@Featherlightstudio Жыл бұрын
All the different meter scales color scheme's can now be set independently. Under Preferences/Metering/Appearance it shows the currently selected scale and related color choices. If you click in the 'Scale' window, it will show all the available meter scales. Choose one and define your colors. Click on Add/Remove to add more nodes in the meter. In console view, the +3 Digital is the default for the channels and the Master can be changed to any scale.

GREAT VIDEO!!!! Is there a system to export for different streaming services, etc... without having to adjust levels (back & forth)?
@Featherlightstudio

Hmm, that would definitely be a time saver but, would only work if every song was the exact same frequency response. There's more info on that here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ob2mdLFqkpjaaIE.html

One issue: The "Input" global metering setting in Cubase 12 takes the meter measurement BEFORE the Pre Gain, not AFTER as this video indicates. When I adjust pre gain with global metering settings set to "Input", the changes do not reflect at all on the meter. Am I missing something here?
@Featherlightstudio
@Featherlightstudio Жыл бұрын
Heh Matthew, good catch, I should have been more clear here. If the global meter setting is set to 'Input' you won't see changes to Pre Gain on the channel meter but, you will see those differences reflected on your downstream Buss/Group and Master Buss Meters as well as any of your downstream effects (Channel and Buss) that have internal meters. Trying to cover too much in a short video. lol

@@Featherlightstudio Awesome, thanks for the update. I was hoping I was wrong because I'd like a pre-fader, post pre-gain option for metering. The other details that you sent in your reply are super helpful. Thanks for a great video!

Question why if i import a track to be used as a refference it peaks like +2 on my meter and my mixes at 0 using limiters clippers etc on the master bus are so much quieter than pro recordings
@Featherlightstudio
@Featherlightstudio 11 ай бұрын
Because those recording references are professionally mastered with a Sh#t Ton of tech and tricks to achieve all that apparent volume. Clippers and limiters only get you part of the way there. They require a well balanced mix to start with ( both frequency and volume) exported at a moderate level so they CAN be mastered separately. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ob2mdLFqkpjaaIE.html

thanks for the tutorial , great video. How do you make it so all the audio events begin at bar 1, even though audio actually begins at various other spots in a project. I have been just drawing in blank event spaces connecting to wherever the audio event actually starts. Is there a better way in the export menu to do this?
@Featherlightstudio
@Featherlightstudio Жыл бұрын
Hmm, are you referring to how to export space in front of your project audio? The export dialog box will export whatever is in-between the project timeline markers at the top of the project. Drag the start marker and end marker to the point where you need them and Cubase will export only that range.
@anthonyhorton5884

@@Featherlightstudio thanks for replying, I was referring to empy space that comes before a sound actually takes place but I found out that when exporting it automatically lines up entire track with space included in bar one til the end of the song so there is nothing special that I needed to do thanks!

This may be a silly question but... in previous version of Cubase, when the red clip light lights on the stereo out master fader, you used to be able to just adjust the fader down and the light would go out. Or you could click the light and it would go out. In C11, the light stays on until you click it regardless of adjusting the fader. Anyone know if there is a setting to change that? It's really annoying since I'm so used to the old way. Can't teach old dogs new tricks...
@Featherlightstudio
@Featherlightstudio 3 жыл бұрын
Definitely no silly questions in a program this comprehensive. In Cubase 11, for now, you have to click on the red clip indicator to extinguish. If someone finds way around this, please chime in. I believe its meant to be annoying because inside the actual meter, even though the 'peak indicator behavior' can be modified between 'hold' or 'hold forever', it can still can be quite hard to notice if its set to a similar color as the body of the meter. Those meter color options can be setup here: Cubase/Preferences/Metering/Appearance

Hi. Thank you. Great video overview. Do you know a way that for example the integrated LUFS value within the Control Room can be made continuous? So when used for level matching or AB-ing one not always have to hit the foreward button to reset the value for new measurements... as lower values are not shown, instead we see the highest older value. The level won't show values below that mark automatically (like in the TC Electrinics LM2 plugin). That drives me crazy. If there was a way to change that somehow I would be glad. 🤔

@@Featherlightstudio Yes, I have a question about this subject. If I import a song done in a different daw using wave files, do I need to set the original tempo in my Cubase project?, does it really make a difference?. Please include this in the turorial. @@delsurmusic It does matter if you want to add anything that relies on the tempo grid of the imported song. ( additional drum grooves, synced loops, etc ) and have it all be in sync....and more importantly...stay in sync. Great video suggestion...working on it.

Input metering is best when your recording audio and need to see the levels coming in to the DAW. Post fader and post panner when you want to clearly see the result of your strip/inserts/channel choices.

@@Featherlightstudio And what if someone else recorded the tracks and I receive the stems for the mixing? do I have set every track at -18db to -12 db? Thank you!
@Featherlightstudio
@Featherlightstudio 3 жыл бұрын
@@LosingMyMindOfficial Setting all the mix stems to ANY pre determined clip level makes the assumption that you already know what all your downstream insert FX ( Compressors, Gates, Dynamic EQ, etc) would need to be. This is almost never the case because every mix is different. As a very general rule, exporting stems is different than mastering a complete song where you are shooting for a very specific peak/RMS/LUFS target. Stems can be all over the place ( a full drum set stem is gonna be radically louder than a soft strings stem or acoustic guitars stem, etc ) With stems, I usually start by importing all the stems/clips, then bringing all the faders up to unity (0) and actually listen to what you have. From there, your decision to start normalizing levels will be much more apparent. If the stems were recorded poorly ( way too hot or too low and noisy ) your mix decisions will be effected.

Hi thanks for the learn fast series, much appreciated, on my mixer stereo out fader, the reading by the side of the fader shows between 0 and -5 the number at the bottom of the fader after reset is -13.5 the main fader on the meter goes to around the 13.5 my meter scale is, digital -18dbfs the peak Max reflects the -13.5, my question is why can't I ever get the mixer meter and the main meter ever to agree on the fader indication but they do on the reading at the bottom of the faders, the scales look to be the same settings, the mixer scale never seems to change, the main meter changes with the scale change.im on 10.5 pro

It's possible they are calibrated to different scales and the bottom of each scale may only show the measurable level to a certain point. Sounds like there may be other things at play here as well,
