Great explanation! When I was at Uni we learnt the CIVIL rule. In a Capacitor the current (I) leads the Voltage. The Voltage leads the current(I) in an Inductor(L). Must work as a memory aid, it was 45 years ago when I learnt it and I haven't forgotten it.😃

it absolutely never hurts to give a refresher course on how a capacitor works and its fundamentals of operation, over time we all may forget certain important characteristics of how they function, even if we generally know how they work we forget important aspects that reminders and reviews could help revise our understanding... And maybe in certain situations help with diagnosing the problem. I absolutely look forward to the next video and some practical information on proving how they work. I got some great reminders in this video.

The whole 'passing current' when capacitors have insulators inside them confused me up until now. It's now clicked. Very well explained. Thanks.

Thanks, it's for me a great introduction into capacitors. I'm waiting for the next video, what can I do whit them and how to use them . Thank you Richard.

Awesome video, the confusing point is when you drew the dielectric (11:27) in the water tank. This is incorrect if it is used as a smoothing capacitor. The input pipe and the output spigot are connected to the same side of the dielectric. You drew it in an AC pass configuration. The other pin is connected to the GND potential.

Thanks for the video. The way you describe how components function is excellent . Looking forward to the next practical video. Cheers mate 👍

When you add the diaphragm to the analogy is when I think people will 'twig' otherwise it's not an easy thing to describe to anyone, nicely done....cheers

@LearnElectronicsRepair This might be a dumb question, but I'm just starting to learn about electronics. If I'm measuring DC voltage, with my black lead on a ground point and red lead on one side or the other of a ceramic capacitor. Is there any circuit configuration, in which I should be reading: positive 2.23V on one side of the capacitor and Negative 8.85V on the other side of the capacitor? Sorry if this is a obvious dumb question that everyone already knows, but I don't know if that's normal or not? The capacitor is on a pcb for a little monitor for my security cameras, it quit working and I'm trying to figure it out. Thank you for your time and knowledge.

Yes, there are plenty of scenarios in which that could be normal. Especially with dual supplies on opamps. There's also plenty of scenarios in which that would be very weird. My initial impression is that you're capacitor is good... And that you're in a bit over your head. If you're anything like me, that's a good thing, because it means you're going to learn a lot. Sure, you'll probably blow up the first 50 repairs you attempt, but salvage all of the components that survived and when you succeed on your 51st attempt you'll feel like a king so don't stop! I wish there had been KZfaq and channels like this when I started. Honestly I don't know how I ever survived being a 15 year old kid yeaching myself electronics by playing with microwave oven transformers and high voltage power supplies in my bedroom.

Oh... I'm excited to start getting into phase shifts! Let me see if I can find my TI-82 from high school for the trigonometry! Love the math, but so far I've never been happy with the explanations for phase shifts in passive LC speaker crossovers from anyone else!

Hi Richard could you share more light on all the different types of capacitiors and their use in circuits ? electrolytic / ceramics etc also why electrolytic capcatitors are designed for certain voltages. Thank you.

Is it going to be covered in the next video that the impedance is dependent on the frequency Z = 1/(jwC).
