- What is the preterite tense?
We use the German preterite tense (imperfect, past tense) for stories and reports in the past, especially in written language. In spoken language, we often use the perfect tense instead of the preterite.
- We use the German Präteritum tense for:
completed actions in the past and facts or states in the past
How do you form the preterite tense?
With weak verbs, the stem vowel always remains the same. This means that they only form the past tense with the endings t or -te. You can only recognize the past participle in weak verbs by its typical initial syllable ge and the ending -et or -t.
In contrast to the perfect tense, the main verb is conjugated after the personal pronouns (numerus)
Many strong/mixed verbs change the word stem in the preterite tense
You have to memorize these preterite forms as well as the past participle 2 for the perfect tense.
Learning German through stories offers numerous advantages for learners at B1 German level. Stories are not only entertaining, but also extremely effective for improving language skills. By reading, watching and listening to stories, learners not only expand their vocabulary, but also improve their grammar and expressive skills.
Stories offer authentic insights into the everyday life and culture of the German-speaking world, which is particularly crucial for B1 learners. They allow you to experience the language in a real-life context, which promotes the understanding and application of the acquired knowledge. With the dialogs, you learn phrases that you can use when speaking German in everyday situations. You unconsciously practise correct pronunciation and get a feel for German sentence structure.
Another advantage is the promotion of reading skills. When reading stories, learners have to actively filter out information from the text, which strengthens their ability to interpret the text. This helps them to better understand complex texts in German, which is crucial at B1 level.
Additionally, stories create an emotional connection to the learning process as they are often linked to characters and actions. This makes it easier to understand and memorize vocabulary and structures as they are embedded in a meaningful context.
