I'm a 65 year masters swimmer who does 400 IMs and 200 flys. What got me over the hump is using stretch bands to work on strength. Bending over I mimic the butterfly pull, doing 3-5 reps of 10. I alternate reps between pulling with a full extension to stepping back a foot or so to concentrate on the first 1/3 of the pull. As I said, doing this for several weeks got me from struggling with the stroke to an efficient swim.

Sometimes my fly is like a barge; other times like quicksilver. I know what I must work on next. I body dolphin 200-300 yd trying to streamline through the smallest tube I can imagine. THAT part really helped me move forward and stay close to the surface. An extra body dolphin between full strokes and/or one armed strokes helps develop a sense of forward momentum. Forward focus and breath focus defines my fly workout. *Maybe* my hands describe a keyhole from entry to exit. Thank you for this wakeup call!

I've followed this tips today! it really turned my job easier. :) Here's some feedback after one training session 1) I feel like I'm closer to surfase. 2) It's much easier to take my arms from the water, very little resistance 3) I Feel like my arms when out of water are razor to the water , amazing feeling 4) I really feel that I'm pushing myself forward 5) It allowed me to have my head down with ease 6) It made me think if I'm doing arm stroke in crawl well or not 7) despite all I've said I still feel unconfortable and need to practice much more the arm stroke with proper technique thank you for this detailed analysis

Thank you so much. Terrific, clear explanation combined with the underwater slo-mo video. I was looking for a similar explanation of the kick, particular the second kick - timing in relation to the pull and what one is trying to achieve, etc., but I see that you covered these in this video and an early video. So again, thank you.

That's really helpful thank you so much! I was wondering why my lower body was sinking in butterfly and it turns out I was pushing the water downward instead of backward

The end tip seems to be contradictory when you said with more undulation the more distance per length but also the flatter you are the more distance because the shortest distance between two points is a straight line. Can you please elaborate?

@@SwimCycleRunCoach I found your video searching "butterfly arm stroke " to help me perfect my stroke. I was having a tough time getting my arms high enough out of the water. This week, I had another breakthrough. A woman watched me swim and told me that I was rushing my stroke. I always had the belief that if I wasn't getting enough lift, it was because I wasn't swimming fast enough. As a result, I wouldn't allow enough time in the glide part of my stoke. Once I put a slight pause at the end of the glide, I found my backward push to be much more effective and now my arms are flying over the water surface. 😁

20 oct 2020 5:37 pm edt(utc-4):thanks. hand-palm-orientation during 0:25 is different-compared-to 3:30. 0:25 show hand-palm always look to rear. 3:30 show hand-palm during mid-swing look-slightly-to floor. hand-palm always look to rear during 0:25 maybe can not make upper-body climb out of water. Very informative and helpful! Thank you. I heard two different things about the timing of the first kick and the arm pull. Is the first kick after the arm pull just before the arms come out of the water or as the arm pull starts to help getting the head out of the water. I guess we have to breath at one point! What a shame! 😁😁😁😁

Hi Marc, If you breathe as the arms start their pull you're effectively pushing your head out of the water and your pull will angle down, pushing yourself up. You want to drive backwards with your effort, moving you forwards, so need to breathe as your hands come under your lower abdomen. Kick at the same time and you will be kicking your head out of the water. That should be most effective.

initiating grabbing the water is very very hard for me, so, i have to push down first!
@SwimCycleRunCoach
@SwimCycleRunCoach 6 жыл бұрын
I would suggest that pushing down first is the reason you're finding it difficult to grab hold of the water. You need to remain flat while you gain a catch and then accelerate your arms from beyond your head to the exit point without too much of a keyhole action. A vlog I'm doing today may just may give you some help - stay tuned.

@@SwimCycleRunCoach 20 oct 2020 5:41 pm edt(utc-4): so 'remain flat while you gain a catch' means butterfly-catch-phase is like breast-stroke-catch-phase 20 oct 2020 5:53 pm edt(utc-4): 'to the exit point without too much of a keyhole action' but maybe less keyhole-action produce decreased-propulsion needed to make upper-body climb out of water. more keyhole-action produce increased-propulsion needed to make upper-body climb out of water. 20 oct 2020 5:56 pm edt(utc-4): michael-phelps seems using arm-swing to make upper-body climb out of water then using leg-kick to swim-forward.

So, is using a bent elbow catch overall better in butterfly? Becuz I've been using straight arm catch this entire time, and whenever I do a 100 fly, my last 50 I am completely dead in the arms. Do u think that is the reason why?

Unfortunately, the video doesn't show any swimmer doing it right. Verbal description of the proper technique is not enough. Thumb down.
