Swimming butterfly is one of the best cardiovascular exercises that you can take part in if swum effectively and efficiently, otherwise, it tends to be a very anaerobic stroke for beginners and intermediates due to the efforts levels required. In general, swimming not only increases your lung capacity, but it improves the ability of your heart to pump blood around your body.
This is the case even if you swim as little as once a week. However, many swimmers tend to get stuck in a rut and fail to improve their technique. This means that the body gets used to the workload being asked of it and you stop improving your fitness. A good tip is to switch to a more demanding stroke, such as the butterfly. Even if you swim butterfly regularly, there are plenty of tips you can learn which will improve your technique, helping you to master it.

Don't get me wrong but those vids are likely for begineers or early intermediate swimmers. Professionals such as Mr. Phelps have tailored technique which reflects their body shape, strength, stamina and other factors. The reason she said about swimming slow and easy is because this drill - when done improperly - is unbelievably exhausting.

I used to swim 2.5 to 3 km butterfly a day in the sea, non stop. I spent almost 4 years not swimming and in my first week at the pools, I can manage 4 sets of 250 meters after a 1000 meter freestyle warm up. I hope to get back my endurance and power in a few months. I love butterfly, It feels amazing when you get into the flow. You feel like a fish 🙂

Are you back to 2-3km? I am practicing still, and improving technique/endurance. I do 100-150m reps :(, I think my arms are tired first. But freestyle I can swim forever and fast. It really is tough to make it to 1-2Km non stop in butterfly.

My problem is when I do the strong kick, my feet are too far out of the water. What do I need to do to keep them low and under water?
@nikoladze77
@nikoladze77 3 жыл бұрын
You are probably kicking from your knees. Try to initiate the kick from your chest (from the abdominal muscles bellow your rib cage) and start it before your hands enter the water for the pull (head goes first in the water). This will set up you timing and rhythm for whole stroke . You will notice that legs will come out water without any effort. In order to get there, practice just dolphin kick with hands under the water to get that undulation from the chest and one arm butterfly drill to practice timing. And be very patient to see the progress. 😀

when you get your head out of the water to breath, is the force that helps getting the head out of the water generated more from the pushing of the arms back or more from the dolphin kick?
@elizabethbarry1865
@elizabethbarry1865 4 жыл бұрын
I’d say the force is generated more from the pull then the kick. For example, if you swim butterfly with no kick using a pull buoy, it is very possible (but a little more difficult) to breathe by just pulling; however, if you do dolphin kick on your stomach, hands by your side, and try and lift your chin to breathe, it is basically impossible.

Everything she said, and you'll see a big improvement already 😜 Other than that, work on everything that increases stamina and coordination, they're both key factors in butterfly. And stay focused on your movements while you swim: even the smallest one makes a huge difference in water. A good technique is capital for a swimmer.

How do you deal with the fear that you'll INHALE water?
@gybx4094
@gybx4094 4 жыл бұрын
Well, no matter how much experience, you will have it happen. Don't panic. Usually, it's a small amount of water. If it's too much water, you'll need to stop and cough it out. Work with your local coach to learn how to clear the lungs when this happens. I've learned how to control the cough so I can cough out the water while still doing the stroke. I take a small breath and really cough hard when my head re-enters the water. I breathe every stroke in Butterfly. When she talks about chin forward, that's a Phelps technique. It lowers the risk of water intake, but if you swim often enough, it will happen occasionally. Don't let it defeat you. Once you master Butterfly, you won't want to do anything else! :-)
