Here is a variation of Ippon Seoi Nage and Uchi Mata I’ve started working on with the CJC juniors.
The main reason for this is most of them seem to struggle to throw in Randori and competition. There are many reasons for this ranging through technique, physiological and psychological.
These variations cannot be done (well) if you do not fully break balance or drive them into the air. This forces them to commit to the technique (once they’ve nailed the technical points) and really try to throw their partner. If not it simply doesn’t work.
My hope is after this block they can take these principles to all of their other techniques and increase their throwing frequency in Randori and competition.
I’m not certain if it will work, but this is my aim and I’m ok if it doesn’t work (obviously I hope it does) I will just have to monitor and review. I hope the video is useful.

as a beginner I always struggle to get the initial unbalancing through the sleeve (traditional seoi) which is required to get any lift, and this is super interesting even if it's not the traditional way of teaching it.

This is awesome Vince. Judo Crusader ep 4 has set a base with its main base throws (you mentioned in one of your videos). Thanks for the information.

Very interesting teaching method, thanks for posting! As a coach you've always got to be thinking of new drills and movements to get students to develop awareness about different biomechanics, so I totally understand what you're looking to achieve here.

Thanks Jay Lee, yes this is by no way a traditional take on any technique but that is not the purpose of these techniques in this instance. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.

You do your seoi with uki goshi's mechanics, what do you think about the traditional way?
@thejudocoach
@thejudocoach 5 жыл бұрын
I really like the traditional way and regularly teach it. I used this method to encourage the Judoka to lift and commit to their throws, leaving the turn until the last second. With a traditional turn the lift comes once you have fully turned your back, which I believe means sometimes the Judoka never get to the lift as they are unable to complete a full turn within randori and Shiai.

So you know how to do the proper way... ok, so instead of criticizing maybe you can make a video for us. Share your knowledge

Why do some variations go for the closer leg(like in the ken ken version), and others go the outer leg(almost like hane goshi)?
@thejudocoach
@thejudocoach 2 жыл бұрын
For me attacking the outer leg enables you to generate more power/lift especially if you are shorter than your opponent - That said I do not believe this would be considered a 'traditional' version. Attacking the closer leg lends itself to taller opponents who are able to lift there leg a lot higher than their opponent. There are obviously exceptions for the rules, but for me if I wanted to lift them into the air to throw I would attack the outer leg, if I wanted to do a ken ken or circling variation I would attack the closer leg.

@@thejudocoach Thank you so much for answering, especially on an old video. Woudnt the outer leg tehnically be a varation of Hane Goshi, rather than uchimata then? I am a BJJ guy myself so alot of guys I spar with just have a crouching position and push the hips back, unlike judo where people are standing upright, so its very hard to penetrate the hips for a lifting movement. I usually use the trips to setup a penetrating uchimata but with a 2 step variation, works very well for me, so was just looking on videos for tips how to improve it even more.

you must be very strong to lift uke like that. I wonder if it work in +100kg
@thejudocoach
@thejudocoach 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, generally in competition this sort of entry is used in lighter weight categories - Zantaria, for example uses these entries extremely well. This example was specific to a class where we were focussing on the lift phase (adapting the technique to suit our goal).

@@thejudocoach Thank you for the answer Sensei, now I can see this method open to other throws as well.

No problem, when training it is important to train many aspects of Judo such as entry, lift, gripping etc. and when doing so the method may change from the 'standard' version.
