Learn Italian | The Italian Menu & Food

Hi and welcome back!
This video was requested by a subscriber, and normally in quarantine I wouldn't have thought to film a video that is travel inspired. However, this is probably the perfect time to learn and practice a new language, so here is how to read and understand an Italian Menu. I know when we travel, it can be difficult if there is not an English menu present, or if the menu is simple and written on a chalk board, it is also intimidating. If you understand the basics, such as the drink menu, first and and second courses, etc.. I know your dining experience will be a lot more pleasant. This video focuses on the Italian Menu and how to read it/understand it. I can always make a part 2 where I teach you how to order, as well as food names, etc.. So please let me know if that is interesting for you.

Thank you so much for watching! Hopefully you now understand what certain sections or food items mean, how to pronounce the Italian words, as well as when to order certain items off the menu. Remember, you can always ask for the English version of the menu, but often times it is not as detailed as the Italian one, so when I can I prefer to order off of the Italian menu; it also makes me feel like less of a tourist!

This was a wonderful video. My wife went to Reggio Emilia for early childhood education and fell in love with Italy and Italian ways. She came home so excited and energetic and couldn’t stop talking about her classes and experiences. So we opened a Reggio Emilia inspired childcare center with 12 employees and 62 children. We were planning to go back but my wife became ill and was diagnosed with Lupus. After a couple of years of treatments she is doing much better. She now is not sure if she wants to go back. Due to Lupus she can’t have Gluten. Yeah, Italy IS gluten lol. How do I find places where she might have a good experience with meals she can eat while there? I can see the hurt in her eyes so she has got to go back and share with me what she loves so much. Thank you 🙏

Oh wow! What an incredible story, thank you for sharing. I am so happy she is doing much better. Italy IS gluten, but there are also many options and delicious meals to eat that are gluten free. Some pizzerias offer gluten free options as well, and a lot of restaurants will happily accommodate you. If you’d like, you can go to the south of Italy and eat fresh seafood, fresh mozzarella cheese, and arancini (rice balls, also gluten free), just to name a few things. Not to mention tons of gelato!! I think you’d be more than happy eating in Italy, regardless of dietary restrictions. I hope you can go together with her, and hopefully I’ll run into you there as well 🤗💗

ladolcelisa Thank you for such a wonderful response. You have given us hope again to go to Italy. We were hoping to celebrate our 43 years together but stuff happens. A trattoria here would be extensive and expensive in my city. Interesting. I love them. I do live in a city that has a foundation in Italian dining though...my cousin always likes to order veal.

I love your videos on Rome and your content is brilliant. I was wondering could you recommend places to stay in Rome. I find Airbnb a mine field to manoeuvre. You seem to have stayed in lovely places in Rome.

Thank you so much! It is definitely a mine field! I usually heart my favourite spots. A good idea is to narrow down spots with things you absolutely need (like air conditioning)! And also an elevator doesn’t hurt (especially when lugging heavy suitcases up many flights of stairs). I just search in areas in or near Piazza Navona / Pantheon and you are quite local. If you want to be in a cute area with good food (but not too close to tourist spots), maybe Trastevere is a better area for you? I hope this helps 🤗

ladolcelisa Thanks very much for taking the time to reply. I might choose Trastevere. I’m just really nervous travelling and I’d like to be safe. It seems a safe area. It doesn’t seem very far out from the centre. Btw your Irish ☘️ Soda bread looks lovely, my granny would be proud.

Aw thank you so much! That is really kind. I’m actually hoping to visit Ireland and explore more of the UK. I would definitely book when you know it’s safe, I’m hesitant to book anything myself. Trastevere is lovely, and all areas of Rome are relatively close. Trastevere is close to certain things, and it is safe. Just watch out for pick-pockets of course, which are anywhere you travel these days ☺️ In Trastevere we stayed in an airbnb called “White House Rome” and it was lovely and on the first floor, so I would recommend that one for sure. Xo

ladolcelisa Ireland 🇮🇪 is a lovely place. I recommend Co Kerry and Co Cork. Dublin is good as well, it’s good for the tourist bits. You should do a tour and travel around the Ring of Kerry. Thanks so much for the recommendation, very much appreciated. Your channel and Instagram are spectacular quality. I hope your channel grows you very much deserve it.

Sorry..but is it better if you, please, make note : in Italy pasta it is it served in plate ofcausse !! But pasta 98.. '/, IT IS IT PASTA with sauce, ..sauce tomato..penne Al salmon.. lasagne..ect..but pasta at his own..only pasta...it is not. ..sooo..neet to clarify it..please. Thankyou. But compliment. Thankyou.
