I like this video. One time, when I was young, I came across three great horned owls on the forest floor. They were young owls, but small by no means. They were at LEAST the size of a football, if not two of them. They were all three huddled beneath a broken branch, I'm not sure why. I approached and stopped in my tracks. The three little monsters snapped their beaks at me and opened their massive wings, doubling or tripping their apparent size. I remember thinking, "one wrong move and these savages could snap my fingers off like baby carrots". It was a trip, very cool and gave me a lot of respect and admiration for these creatures.

Have always been interested in observing nature and animal behavior... especially with Barn owls since I have an opportunity to see them occasionally flying from one of my barns. I rarely open the doors of the barn they stay in but when I do they will soar silently and majestically over my head when exiting. I assume Lookie is a younger owl...the adults I see seem to have a much wider wingspread....but the coloration is exactly the same.....beautiful magnificent creatures.

You are lovely and your owl is just an absolute joy. Some friends and myself have recently had a heartbreaking month or so when 5 of 6 owlets were killed or starved one by one at the Cornell University Barn Owl live cam. We have since been rooting for Pearl, the only living owl that was rescued, placed in wildlife rehab facility, and finally freed back into the wild. I am in love with raptors, especially Barn Owls and you have helped to me to "rehabilitate' from that trauma which unfolded in real time.

What I love most about your relationship with her is that you allow her to be an owl, with her own personality & that she's cute on her own - you're not making a "circus" bird out of her. Additionally, you are allowing her to be an ambassador for her species of owl in the most natural way possible. I'm learning so much from your videos and even though at first I was unsure about. how I felt about keeping a bird that should be in the wild as a pet, you do love her as much as a mother loves her child. I had a Barn Owl for 15 years and the posture with the lowered wings isn't because the owl wants to fly off. It is only true if the wings are lowered momentarily, in which case the owl will look upwards excitedly and then will squat down, ready to spring into flight. If the wings are lowered for a while, then it indicates that the owl is slightly overheated and is attempting to cool down. They pant when they are very overheated, then stop panting, then lower their wings to allow air circulation around the sides of the body. You will observe that they never want to fly whilst doing this because flying would overheat them even more.

I've heard about "Owl no-nos" from a book about a woman raising an owl. She didn't go into great detail in describing the behavior, so I was wondering what it actually looks like.

Has Lookie ever been caught "toe-dusting"? That's when a barn owl uses the tactile comb of feathers above their beak and swipes it over their talons. That's usually a sign that the owl is angry or frustrated, and is sometimes used as a threat posture, especially in conjunction with wing spreading.

i found a owl with broken wing. there is not bird vat in area. i tried to feed it though droper and try to give him/her raw meat but i saw it started loose motion . i dont have any idea how to fix him :(

I have a question about owl body language. I think I may have acedently befriended a wild owl. let me explain... we have an owl in our neiborhood and it got very curious about me. I was at my window just watching it hunt when it noticed I was watching. it landed on the telephone wire right in front of my window (about 20 feet away) and just stared at me. I was realy free ked out at first. I tiled my head left, it did the same, I poked my head up and it did the same. we litraly did this for like 20 minits be for it got bord and flew off. it was just so curious. I felt like a disney princesses. did I befriend an owl or am I just over exited that it was curious about me?
