Phrasal verbs in English are every student's worst nightmare. They are frustrating, confusing and seem to be completely random. But are they?
In part two of this series I will continue to show you how cognitive linguistics can explain the hidden logic behind phrasal verbs and make them much easier to learn. Join me as I teach you the deeper meanings of six more particles: through, around, over, back, for and of. See you in class!

Really great. These phrasal verbs are basically the same as compound verbs in German. Here, the function of the participle is handed over (pun!) to a prefix. And very often, they are actually similar to the English participle. Example: to switch on -> einschalten / anschalten (to switch -> schalten) But in many clauses/sentences, the prefix is separated from the verb and so becomes a phrasal verb as well. Example: I switch on the radio. -> Ich schalte das Radio ein (Yeah. I know ... they are separate, but in English also: I switch it on.)
