the term "Goodyear welted" refers to a welting process using a machine developped by a Mr. Goodyear. What you show is traditional hand welting using an inseaming awl to perforate the ridge on the insole. In goodyear welting the machine stitches the welt, Upper and lining to a gemming ribbon that is glued to the insole. Calling what you do "goodyear welting" is like calling your home baked bread a wonderloaf

That is mighty impressive considering you do not have the vast majority of the equipment normally used when creating footwear from the back of a cow to the tip of your toe. Well done and the fiddle was a nice touch. All the best from Scotland

This is pretty cool, I hope to try this one day. A few things i noticed... You forgot to take out the nails that hold the insole to the last when you put in the cork to fill the cavity. Another thing is that is a LOT of cork, try leaving it as close to even with the welt. You want enough to fill in the void created by the "gemming" but not so much that is sticks up half an inch out. Good video, hope you still are doing this stuff!

You totally saw the nails left in. Gosh, I don't think there is anything worse. It truly broke my heart. And your right about the cork.

Fantastic video! I like how this shows a lot of the fine details of how it's actually done. Somebody can tell me how to cut and carve an insole 5 times and I still wont have a clue on how to actually do it. I gotta see it to really understand. Excellent camera work by the way.

really not bad at all for a self taught first try!! good job! but pleeeasepleaseplease add the information to your videos that you are not a pro shoemaker (at least not yet). people will think its the real shit and repeat your mistakes instead of questioning them. beginning with the video title. this is a hand welt not a goodyear welt. this is something where its important to be honest about. to show respect to trained shoemakers and for yourself to acknowledge that you have some way to go... helps you get better! but cool that you show interest in our craft and share your journey :) also if you (or anyone) want any tipps feel free to ask here. i love to share what i know! also: where you able to get the last out, with the nails in the insole still in place? (happened to the best of us ;) )

Hey man did you take a cobbler class or just learn from KZfaq to make footwear? You build them in a very traditional bespoke manner! Very impressive! How many pairs have you made now? I'm big into cobbler KZfaq videos, you learn lots of tips and tricks!

I didn't take a cobbler class. I wish I could, but they are very expensive. I have just been watching KZfaq videos and teaching myself. Trying to figure it out. I have made about 5-6 pairs. Many at the beginning I would just make a single shoe to save on material.

@rolandofgilead8968

Fill the void created while carving our leather insole. Factory boots like Red wing will use foam that will break down faster than cork and will not mold to the shape of the foot like cork will. But foam, wool, cork something has gotta fill that void.

First of all im impressed. Secondly, i have questions. Tons of questions. Do you have a video on what materials are used?? Like the liquid? And the mannequin foot thing?? Whats that called? Isit reusable? Did you make it yourself? Im so curious. What was the crumbly stuff on the souls?? Is that also a type of leather?? Or wood?? And where on earth do you get a leather stitcher? Is the one you have powered by your arm? Like a wheel? Or a foot peddle? The way the randing was made here is also impressive, ive only seen the pre made stuff. What are the tools you're using when cutting the strips from the leather? Are there any well known ruels to soul making? Like for arch support and safety to the wearer? Are there any books or classes or youtubers you recommend to really get into this craft? Thank you for reading this far, and double thankyou for posting this cool video

I cannot understand why that shape is what is standard for shoemaking. Look down at your feet. Do they look like that? They shouldn't.
@puebespuebes8589
@puebespuebes8589 4 ай бұрын
Because back in the middle age rich people where often horse rider so they needed pointy shoes, this resulted in those shoes becoming a fashion and then the norm. The modern standart is like 150 year old at this point and completly obsolete but the only way to get normal shoes is either to wear sandal like the roman did or make them yourself or buy expensive "barefoot" shoes that look like colorfull trashbag.

As said by the other responses, the last isn’t there to perfectly replicate a foot shape. It is there as a support and guide for a shoe shape that lasts the longest and isn’t too difficult to make, in a style people will buy. If you wanted anatomical accuracy, we would make sneakers that fit around every toe….but this would be both uncomfortable and time consuming, so the last doesn’t show every toe.
@puebespuebes8589
@puebespuebes8589 2 ай бұрын
@@Itried20takennames this would be confortable believe me, people just dont really have a choice. Modern shoes last are based on a standard from the 1800s that used the middle of the foot as the widest point of the shoes as most people had disformed feat from either pointy fashion shoes or the fact that many people ( since roman time ) wore shoes that where simetrical to switch them when they wore out from use. It's an obsolete but profitable way of making shoes as it weaken the feat making people rely on arch support instead of muscle strenght.
