I did a paper on picking economy of motion in college and it was almost completely dismissed. I even cross referenced my research with kinesiology studies. My professors seemed to think my thesis had no value. I even made some of the same points, like the Al DiMeola wrist method. 25 years later I feel vindicated.

As a teacher and grad student I know EXACTLY why I CANNOT STAND academia. Hell, most of society’s problems have come directly from arrogant/narcissistic professors who have been insulated from reality by ivory towers made out of theoretical concepts that take mental gymnastics to argue the practicality of. Universities were all hijacked post WWII, but if it weren’t for the Achilles Heel of said unchecked arrogance, toxic ideas may not have been adopted like we see now. The rejection of your paper is yet another symptom of Satan himself manipulating all that is good. You, sir, are not only a Patriot, but a force against such evil in this world. 💪🏼👏🏽🤝

just really discovering the power of intentional pick slanting and its absolutely mind blowing. I've struggled so hard with fast alternate picking lines because I've tended towards flat inside picking. So many educators just say that you need to put the hours in and the progress will come. Basically NO ONE with the exception of Troy and Ben Eller talk about pick slanting, and it really is the sledge hammer that breaks down so many walls to fast technical playing almost instantly

So true, I've been playing for 40 years and have always been an above average alternate picker, but, as Troy has said so many times, there were always passages that felt very natural and others that were very awkward and I had no idea why until I started watching Troy's videos and I purchased Troy's Eric Johnson video. Its been incredibly freeing understanding what my picking is doing.

Awesome interview. Troy's material has been an eye opener for me and has unlocked my picking technique in an incredibly short time - I went from playing 120bpm phrases on 16th notes with difficult to playing 150bpm (and up) phrases comportably (still working on phrases which require multiple wrist / joint motions though!) in a matter of weeks. It took a lot of the guess work from my practice sessions!

I really love the picking as a language approach by Troy. The idea that your picking style, no matter what it is, will have a great impact on what notes you choose to play is very insightful. Reminds me of a structuralist theory of language, and it makes a lot of sense.

32:37 This is a great point. I also used to think the same that sticking with certain techniques would limit our freedom. Actually, like Troy said, the truth is that we usually don't have enough specific vocabulary that covers the different picking motions. I never thought this way.

From a well known jazz guitarist is where I heard that thing about, "that picking style is dumbe because your improvisation is limited to what you can do due to the picking." Troy BLOW THAT TOTALLY out of the water.

Man I can relate to this. At 66, I learned guitar way before internet, computers, etc. I was generally pretty happy with my progress, but at some point I notice that I could do descending scales much faster and easier than ascending. And when I tried to analyze it, it was hard. It was impossible at speed, but when I slowed things down, I inevitably played differently. And I really thought I was using alternate picking all the time. It took me a long time to learn to keep playing the same way but slow it down enough so I could actually see what was going on. And I found that I was doing ascending, 3 note per string scales using alternate picking, but my descending 3 note per string scales were using economy picking (which of course, I did not call it at the time - there was no vocabulary or technique training at my disposal). Once I discovered this, I tried to learn to do the economy picking approach ascending. Which quickly lead to the realization that the pick slanting/wrist motion/string escape motion also had to change. And learning that was a STRUGGLE. Today I can do it in both directions, but descending still feels easy/natural, whereas I really have to concentrate and think about the approach for ascending scales.

Cool! I become to optimize different phrases, trying to play them the most efficient way: change fingerings, do more notes on string to have time to"rest", to do fewer string transitions. Use stronger fingers more (index and middle) so they do most of the job. Add legato to alternate picking to move balance between two hands. Sometimes tapping and hybrid picking helps a lot! And so on ..

I guess that's another good reason to try playing fast and messy. That way you can start with your current motion and purposefully try to adjust it while still going fast, but not trying to be clean. Then if you get used to going fast with the new motion, it should be possible to slow down and clean it up, while keeping it going at speed.

What Troy talks about at around 28 mins between Als and Mikes opposing picking attacks looking the same, but much different in the way you end on an up or down stroke is the way ive always picked, and i didnt even think anything of it. I just knew if needed to hit the next string with an upstroke i needed to be under the string, or if i needed to lead with a down stroke i need to be on top of the string. Hearing this interview can be a blessing or a curse because i can see how it can be confusing to a newer player.

An interesting difference between EJ and Joe Bonamassa. Where EJ does that economy picking move, Joe alternate picks it, which produces a different sound for some reason. Maybe it allows him to play different patterns, but it sounds much more interesting. Most people teaching Joe's style say Joe does the same economy move, but he doesn't.

Hi! I had years of rock and jazz background before knowing anything about pick slanting and crosspicking terms. After knowing these concepts, I analyzed myself. I found that with distortion I naturally played with downward pickslanting. I think that to my ears a good rock tone included that snappier sound after the pickstroke and downward pickslanting leaded me towards that (without even knowing). On the other side, when I played jazz with clean tone, I found the opposite: I tended to use crosspicking. With this kind of picking I tended to pick softer to remove that snappier aggressive sound. I tried to play my old jazz clean licks changing the cross picking to pick slanting, and they did not sounded right to my ears. Did you notice the ´´phenomenon´´?
@streetwiseguitar5113
@streetwiseguitar5113 7 ай бұрын
Hey Rodolfo! Thanks for taking the time to write all that. The only phenomena that I actually notice is that as soon as I stop working on technique it seems like I immeadiately begin to suck! lol Aside from that ...yes... I do have a different touch with harder stuff, but I struggle with picking anyways. It's either economy or alternate.

im listening to what hes saying about being either downstroke escape or upstroke escape and still have no idea which one i am. when i play 3 notes per string its easier for me to play starting on a downstroke, leading me to believe im upstroke escape, but playing pentatonic licks, its also easier for me to start on a downstroke. when i start on an upstroke i tense up. so which is it?

I saw the Mike Stern and Eric Johnson show several years ago at the Blue Note NYC. Al Dimeola was in the audience. I noticed after awhile that this five note pattern was played so many times in his solos that it got boring. It's like he was stuck in that pattern and it just ended up sounded the same over and over again. Mike Stern attacked the guitar in many different ways and that produced lots of different sounds that were much more interesting, much more musical. Juxtaposing these two players exposed this pattern-based approach to playing the guitar as formulaic. His chordal work was way more interesting and even Mike Stern seemed to be super impressed with it.

So it was something like that and dare I say even the word, "organic?" I hate using that word because it's used everywhere and all the time! But, one must call a spade a spade and I believe that that's what I sensed. I don't think that you have to be totally orthodox in your belief system in other words, I believe that there will be exceptions and maybe those exceptions will feel fine if they only happen for a short while. Otherwise, it's good that you have "a system" for yourself. In other words, through experience you get to learn what works best for you and then you work with that! I hope that helped!? @@streetwiseguitar5113 Yes!! Definitely answers it. This should help many a struggling guitarist. Many times we get caught up in trying to master playing something up to speed, thinking it is a lack of ability which can be improved through repetition. In many cases, it might be due to lack of dedication. The 10,000 hour rule. Yet we might get caught repeating a phrase, not realizing we might have to adjust our technique or adjust the fingering to better suit our style of picking. This almost always happens when there is a need of playing something fast, up to speed, like the original recording.

I realy respect Troy and everything he achieved with CTC, i learned a lot from all that! But, the part in this interview where he says to students that they just need to play more of the stuff they can do with their technique and don’t worrie about what they can’t do is kind of a bummer to me….If i would tell that to my students i would have a very easy job. To me it is a bit like saying to a long jumper: your technique is realy awesome for a distance of about 4 meters, so just do more of those 4 meter jumps and don’t worry about working on different techniques, although those probably would allow you to increase the distance. In that regard it would be great if you could do an interview with the unbelievable Anton Oparin one day. He is showing us that there is a technique which allows you to play anything clean and fast; isn’t that what we all want?

Andrea thank you for the time to write all of that! I sincerely appreciate the time you took to watch the video! I think generally what he was trying to say was that you should try working with your natural sense of movement. Even a long jumper will have their own system by which they set up the jump and explode at the line and how they travel through the air… They use certain parameters within their own system. If I’m not wrong I believe you were saying the same thing. Interviews; although I have an incredibly important interview coming up in regards to Allan Holdsworth, I have really tried to steer away from interviews. Why? Because interviews don’t do much in terms of direct followers to what I do. I’m working really hard to build my KZfaq audience and interviewing somebody else/promoting somebody else’s gig does not help me in terms of trying to achieve my goals. Mind you, I am very good at doing interviews and I really enjoy doing them… But nobody is paying me to do that and with the exception of very few interviews, not enough people watch the video itself to even pay for a fraction of my time. Therefore, I have simply decided to wake up and focus on my own thing. I will do the rare interview, but it will definitely not be the norm. Some of my interviews haven’t even gotten 1200 viewers! It’s just not worth it. On the other hand I hope you subscribe to the channel and you continue to enjoy the cool stuff that I put out. he is a phenomenal teacher and obviously haver done ton of work. I'm just not a fan of exssesive alternate picking, wheter this style or the old school speed picking. Way to robotic for my taste. I think hybrid picking is the best way to go about things, makes for very easy string skipping and to me, a much nicer more pleasing musical statement.

If you have ever seen me play or gone to my Instagram (the same name as this channel) you could see I do a similar thing. A real easy way to check right now if you are on my channel is to go look at my Michael Brecher transcription! But you are so right! Troy is an incredible teacher! I hope you subscribe and hit the notification bell! There will be lots of interesting stuff coming out of this channel. It be great to have you onboard!
