RECOMMENDED VIOLINS:
Fiddlerman violins are the only violins I currently recommend. You can choose the violin to suite you depending on your budget. Remember the cheaper you go (buying rubbish from Amazon for example), the worse the violin will be (garbage most likely) and the HARDER it will be to learn - which is why Fiddlerman violins are an excellent beginners choice:

HOW TO PLACE DOT/STICKERS ON YOUR VIOLIN:
- • DIY Dot Violin Finger ...
HAVING TROUBLE TUNING YOUR VIOLIN?
This might help: • 5 ways to stop violin ... bubt if they are slipping a lot and you are having trouble tuning the violin, then you should get something better set up (see above).

I'm 11 years old and yesterday my student violin arrived. I got a little discouraged because a lot of people start playing the violin ages 3-7, but then I read some comments seeing people who are in adulthood learn the violin. That motivated me to learn the violin. When I unboxed my violin, the first thing I did was search up "unboxing violin", then I stumbled upon you. Thank you for these FREE online lessons and PDFs!

My desire to learn the violin is about a decade long. I've watched from afar and now feel like i'm ready to learn. I setup my first student violin at 27 years old this evening and i'm relying on your easy to understand and laid back method to keep me going. I'm hoping this will help my mental health. Right, well, I'm finally nearing retirement and, in my 50's, realizing a dream I've had since my early 20's of learning violin. I've had the instrument for about a week and I am FINALLY getting the hang of the 4th lesson. The 1/8 notes really messed with me for a while. Haha But, I'm getting there. Still not making smooth transitions, but that's to be expected I reckon. Onwards and forward!! Thanks so much for putting together this series!!

I'm 24 years old and I play three other musical instruments (meaning I know how to and have experience but I wouldn't say I'm good at them these days due to a lack of practice) but I've been wanting to learn violin for a very long time but it's often been too expensive of an instrument for me. I finally got my hands on a used student violin and when I found this course for free/very low cost of books I was over the moon! These exercises are super great, I used to scoff at doing exercises as a kid/teen but as an adult I see the necessity of them and I'm so happy I have the opportunity to learn such a beautiful instrument. I just have to remember that I'll sound bad for a long time before I sound good!

I have just started learning Violin, as an adult. I have wanted to learn since I was a child, but until now, never had the opportunity. I take lessons twice a month, but being a visual learner, I have found your video lessons to be more helpful to me than the in-person lessons, because with the printed out PDF (I'll be purchasing your book shortly), I color coded the notes, and It is so helpful to be able to pause the lesson, and redo a part that I don't get immediately. Thank you for taking the time to do these videos and make the PDF's. It is so very helpful!

I watched your videos many MANY years ago with my daughter when she was taking lessons here in the states. She (5 years old) did them for about a year but it was just not her instrument so I sold the violin and moved on but I always secretly wanted to learn. Jump forward 5 (?) years and I found a really beautiful 70 year old violin at an antique shop, had a luthier set it up for me and looked for you again and was so happy to find you easily on youtube again. I remember the happiness I had the first time I tried one of your lessons and was amazing I could "play" a note or two. Looking forward to doing it again but my kids keep asking to play the violin as well so I'm going to make them watch your videos if they are determined to "play" with it. Early music education is amazing, she can play the piano and the the oboe and the French horn and I think thats all connected back to those early violin lessons and piano lessons.

Alison, this is so awesome. I restrung my violin and, for the first time in years, I'm making tolerable sounds with it. Your videos approach this in such a basic and understandable way. The exercises are truly helping me figure out where to position my arm for each string. I feel so accomplished and inspired. I have 17 years being self taught at the piano and I'm having fun interchanging between these two instruments. And learning on my own makes me love it more. So fun.

I know the angle of your arm has a lot to do with singling out one string to play, but when it comes to the placement of the bow on the strings, do I place the hair flat against the string, or should I be placing the side of the hair of the bow on the string, and does it make a difference for the sound? It looks like you’re playing with the side of the bow. Thank you!
@TheOnlineViolinTutor
@TheOnlineViolinTutor 5 жыл бұрын
For now, I would play flat. Playing on the tilt is more advanced and a way to manipulate the sound - not something you want to be teaching yourself to do now as you wont get a good and proper tone. I play tilted as its impossible not to for me now - its just how I play after 30 years of playing. For you, play flat and really work on getting that good tone. You will probably find as you advance, you will tilt automatically anyway....

Took lessons for about 3 months when I was 9, life derailed my being able to continue, so many years later I am determined to pick up what I never wanted to drop, your channel is making that possible. Thank you! Hopefully Ill be able to swing a nicer violin a bit down the road, but I'll torture this cheapo one and see if it is a sensible investment first! If I am rubbish I can at least say I tried before running back to my flute 😂

These are tougher than I thought lol. Still trying to get through exercise 1 without hitting the other strings before moving to the next exercise. Edit: Day 2: I finally got exercise 1 down and can switch between string D and A without hitting the other strings! Going to practice it a bit more before heading to exercise 2. Edit 2: Day 2: Got through exercise 2 easier because I can control the bow a bit better. Will not start exercise 3 until tomorrow so I can keep trying to perfect 1 & 2 today. Having a lot of fun :) Edit 3: I did it! I can play them without hitting the other notes too! Moving on to the next lesson.

I just bought your complete course (lessons 1-30) and I'm so excited! ❤ As so many people here, I'm a busy parent with long hours at work, so I bought a violin mute and I'm now practising in the car during my lunch break or whilst waiting for my daughter, in our poky bathroom late at night etc. The only downside might be that I probably sound a lot like the girl in "American Pie" as soon as I start talking about my violin ("This one time, at band camp ..."). 😂 Thank you for so much joy, Alison, it's appreciated beyond words! Xx

How do you play an G and then a A without playing the D in between? Do you lift the bow? When I do that, the bow bounces on the strings.

@TheOnlineViolinTutor

No, Im afraid you will need to buy a left handed violin. You cant just swap things about as the actual violin itself will need to be designed left handed.

The Online Piano and Violin Tutor thank you for your response, I guess I better start learning right handed. I also tried rosin on my pegs and my violin seems to get out of tune each time I pull it out to use.. is there anything else I can use? I have the medini violin.
@TheOnlineViolinTutor
@TheOnlineViolinTutor 6 жыл бұрын
Well a good 50 of my students are left handed and they play the same way as me. Personally, I dont think it matters as BOTH hands play a very important and equal role, so its the lesser of two evils. No-one says your dominant has has the hold the bow or play on the fingerboard - in fact, I wish I was left handed playing right handed as then my fingers on the fingerboard would move as I want them too, rather than my dominant hand doing the bowing. If anything, I would say you have the advantage over me....

That was my first problem too. A year back then while I tried to play my bro's violin, it was so hard for me, but trust me, just keep on practicing, just like playing guitar. You'll get used into it. (sucks but we lefties sometimes need to buy right handed materials :()
@TsuneoMai
@TsuneoMai 6 жыл бұрын
great answer. i had the same problem at first, i was wondering if i should buy a left handed violin. but then i tried out in the shop to bow with left and right and i felt no big difference. so i went with the right handed one. still up to now i was afraid that maybe at a higher lvl of playing with the left hand bowing i could put more feelings into the music and let it sing more... but i guess that is not the case then.

I used to play the violin as a child, I even played in small concerts organised by the music school I was with but I gave it up when I turned 13 because as a teenager, I thought it wasn't cool and people would laugh at me for playing it. Now I'm 28 and I am beginning to relearn. This is a great resource.
