We show you how to build yourself a simple firewood storage bin using cattle panels, a heavy-duty tarp, zip-ties, and pressure treated lumber. Simple, yet effective to keep your dry wood dry all winter.

Depends a bit on the materials available to you, but essentially: 2 - 16' cattle panels (48" or 50" high) 2 - 2x6x10' PT (you'll cut these down) 2 - 2x6x8' PT 2 - 2x4x8' PT 8" zip ties 3" outdoor screws 10x16 heavy duty tarp 1 5/8 screws with washers to hold tarp down and attach to the base pieces

Hi , I liked your video , does t seem like your design allows for ventilation for drying the wood very well ? All in all good idea ,Thanks !
@SpragueRiverHomestead7 жыл бұрын
We typically don't put fresh wet wood in these storage shelters. We are currently splitting wood that has been down for a couple years drying out, so it's not a big concern for us at the moment. One way to get around the drying would be to leave the tarp off during the warmer summer months for extra ventilation if you can do that. That should help the wood dry out faster being in sun longer.

This is an awesome idea! I've been searching high and low for a simple firewood shed. I live in a snowy climate and it gets pretty windy during the winter months. Do you think this would hold up in my climate? REPLY
@SpragueRiverHomestead6 жыл бұрын
Rob & Nita S We get several feet of snow in our area each year and they do fine as long as they stay full. My suggestion would be to drive metal or wooden stakes into the ground and attach it to the wood bin to help with wind, and a post at each end with a 2x6 as a main ridge pole for the snow and you should be all set. Thanks for watching! -Nikki

Never stack firewood on the ground. Use pallets or something else. The wood will wick moisture from the ground.
@SpragueRiverHomestead5 жыл бұрын
Agreed, unless you live in the desert and there's no moisture in the ground.

Love this idea, but how do these hold up to winds 20 to 30 miles an hour. I live in Oklahoma where the wind comes sweeping down the plain.
@SpragueRiverHomestead5 жыл бұрын
You'll definitely have to stake them down. The thing that will wear out the fastest would be the tarps. If the bin is full and the tarp is secured tightly they do just fine. Empty or with the tarp too loose,the tarp will rip and shred.

@davestone9835 жыл бұрын
Just use pallets for the base. They're free and they allow air flow. Your design offers almost no air flow
@SpragueRiverHomestead5 жыл бұрын
Pallets will help the wood dry also if you need that. We live in the desert and our wood is always dry before it goes into the bin. Otherwise we'd choose to do it a little different. Thanks for watching!
@David-fv7zg4 жыл бұрын
Sprague River Homestead I was wondering about that myself, but this makes sense. Where I live pallets would work better. Build to suite your environment!! Thanks for sharing this.

For us non-farmer/ranchers what is a cattle panel? Otherwise like your idea and presentation. Good to see a lady doing the assembly too!
@SpragueRiverHomestead7 жыл бұрын
The term "cattle panel" is for the temporary fence panel you can buy at a ranch/feed store. It's a panel made from mesh (typically 1/4" welded wire) and about 48" tall x 16' long. We use them on a lot of projects and will be showing more this year. And the lady of the farm is usually the one building everything. The husband is more mechanic and heavy lifting.
crazy question but is the length on these 16ft ? I see some panels at TSC 16ft x 50 in H
@SpragueRiverHomestead6 жыл бұрын
Sean Bussie Yes, these panels are 16' long. 50" x 16' is a pretty standard length for cattle panels. Thanks for watching!

What kind of tarp did you use ?
@SpragueRiverHomestead5 жыл бұрын
So far we've just used the heavy duty tarps. They last 3-4 years. We've kicked around either putting a tin roof on them or going with the heavy duty resealable canvas when these need replacing.

Ouch! That doesn't sound like fun. We lose things in the snow during Winter also. We learned a couple years ago that if you leave something out, expect to lose it until March or April on a heavy snow year.
@anytirellc6 жыл бұрын
It's easier to continue with the first one, make it longer. Just keep going. No need to build separate structures
@SpragueRiverHomestead6 жыл бұрын
Kevin Austin In this case it wasn't, as there isn't enough level ground in that location to make a deeper bin. Turning it sideways wouldn't work either as shed snow would build up between the bin and the shop causing pressure on the bin and the warping of the panels.
@anytirellc6 жыл бұрын
That's why yours look better than mine. LoL

Mine are long and just held in by T-posts so that I can pull them away as I empty the wood out. Build as I stack, take apart as I empty.

If there is any chance at all of forest fire/ wild fire near your homestead it is extremely unwise to store firewood anywhere close to your buildings (residential, garages, other storage ).
@SpragueRiverHomestead6 жыл бұрын
awalt26439 Generally, yes, unless you have a fire supression plan that makes up for it. I actually talked to several Forestry folks before we located the woodbins where we did. Because they are nearly empty during the fire season and the next season's wood is far from any buidlings until fall when fire season is over it is not considered to be a risk. Also, we keep nearly 100' of defensible space all the way around the buildings with capability of wetting most of it via hose bibs and sprinklers located strategically. Thank you for watching!

@SpragueRiverHomestead4 жыл бұрын
For us it's not. You can vary the height by making the base a little more narrow if it needs to be taller. Otherwise it's a pretty frugal set-up that has worked well for us over the last few years.
