@@PlainPortuguese The correct answer was "Obrigada pelo arquivo." My question was which of the 5 reasons given for using "por" would apply: 1) Duração, 2) Caminho, 3) Meios de comunicação, 4) No lugar de..., or 5) Agente da passiva--and why?

@@semproblemas8634 In this case, 'obrigado/a' requires the use of 'por'. You should always use both in combination. The same goes for 'ser responsável por' (to be responsible for...)

Olá! Sure. Think of 'para trás' as the opposite of 'para frente'. If someone tells me 'Não olhe para trás', they don't want me to look over my shoulder. They want me to keep looking forward. 'Olhe para frente. Não olhe para trás.' If someone tells 'Dê um passo para trás', they don't want me to move forward, but to step back. Did I answer your question?

Olá! No exemplo da farmácia, ambas as opções estão corretas. 'Estou comprando os remédios para ela.' - ela irá tomá-los, e não eu. 'Estou comprando os remédios por ela.' - ela não pôde ir à farmácia, então eu fui no seu lugar.

Olá Aankita, First of all, 'ao', is the contraction of the preposition 'a' + the masculine definite article 'o' = 'ao' 1. Some verbs require the preposition 'a', for example, 'agradecer' (to thank) * Eu agradeci ao médico pela ajuda (I thanked the doctor for the help) 2. Some other verbs require 'para', for example, 'dar' (to give) * O médico deu um conselho para o (pro) paciente (The doctor gave some advice to the patient). 3. The verb 'ir' (to go) accepts both 'a' and 'para', with a slight change in meaning. This change, though, is not perceived in spoken language, meaning that most Brazilians may use either one. * Amanhã ele vai ao mercado (Tomorrow he is going to the grocery store = he is staying there for a short period of time) * Amanhã ele vai ao Rio de Janeiro (Tomorrow he is going to Rio = he is staying there for a short period of time) * Amanhã ele vai para o (pro) Rio de Janeiro (Tomorrow he is going to Rio = he is staying there for a longer period of time; he may even be moving to Rio)
