In theory the series resistor can be put anywhere. According to Dave, if the circuit is upside down all the electrons will fall out. So a resistor at the bottom would catch them all. But serious, if any of the circuit mistakenly touches ground, you would want the resistor at the top to protect the LED's from damaging overvoltage. Cheaper to replace a resistor than an Ellie Dee. Usually.

First to spot your deliberate mistake. When calculating the resistor value at 8:20, you didn't account for the voltage drop across the LED !

If the source voltage is high enough, the voltage drop of Ellie Dee becomes less significant. However, I'm designing circuits around 5V usually so I want to be more accurate about what voltage drop will be across the resistor to more accurately target a current value, so I personally always subtract it out. The actual voltage drop across Ellie Dee will vary from what you expected anyway and it is trial an error, but a rough calculation will get you going as to what resistors to pull out of the bin to try. For instance, I'll shoot for 5 mA with my resistor - then decrease the value of the resistance until I'm happy with the lighting level vs. current consumed.

@pault6533 Agreed, in practice a few ohms is irrelevant when lighting small leds. But this video was all about voltage drops and Ohms law, so I thought this was a bit of an omission. He was using 9 volts in this case, so the LED drop is significant for a theory video. A well presented video nonetheless.

@@pault6533 It also factors in if you have a high source voltage and *multiple* LEDs in series, e.g. for lighting purposes. Example: Let's say you have a 24V supply and then parallel strings of 7 white LEDs (Vf=3.1V) in series each. You want 20mA through the LEDs. If you calculate the resistor based on the full 24V (and not the 2.3V left over by the LEDs), you'll barely get a current of 2mA. The difference in brightness might be visible. ;)

You should put the resistor between the 2 LED's only because I like balance. In reality, it does not matter where in the circuit it goes

Happy Easter Richard. Q1. Where to place the resistor? A. Before the LEDs. I have found the 'online' resistor V drop calculator. It calcs V in V out omhs and mA. One assumes, check the specs on what component your trying to power in the circuit? I'm still unsure how to recognise the resistor 'gate' direction for the flow of current. I suppose you could check it with a meter and turn it around? 💫🇦🇺

Resistors don’t have polarity, they work the same either way around. Also, it doesn’t matter where it goes to limit the current in the circuit. 😎

Thanks, Richard; a blessed resurrection day in Jesus Christ's name, amen. Richard, now I'm starting to understand how the voltage works. We are using the same voltage and getting different Amps. Is it correct, then, that using this construction, I can drive two different motors of different capacities? Richard, this means that I can put more LEDs in series until the voltage gets to 0 volts at the output. Am I correct? Thanks for the answers.

Basically yes. This is an introduction, I will continue to investigate Kirchhoff's laws (yes actually there are two of them) in the next video - in a practical way ,and yes with lots of LEDs in series. 🙂 Regards resurrection, as I mentioned I have no issue with anyone celebrating Easter in any way they wish, and I hope you had a good one, even if christ does get resurrected on different dates each year based on the lunar calendar. The only thing I do take an exception to is my teachers at school who (deliberately?) explained Easter in a one sided manner without presenting me with all of the facts so I could form my own reasoned opinion as to what the origin and meaning of it was. If I could go back in time I would certainly have a word with them about that.

Yes. The voltage will drop after each diode in series. So your supply has to supply enough volts to overcome the sum of all the voltage drops from the diodes to get to the other side. That's what I think
