Always look to where the immediate danger is coming from. In most cases that is right first unless entering a one way street with traffic coming from your left.

Very true!! I always try to make them feel as relaxed as possible but in mock tests should they not also be prepared for an examiner that is less chatty or friendly? An examiner should always try to make the candidate feel comfortable but unfortunately they are just people and not all of them have the people skills.

Thank you for your comments…You’ve highlighted a few points in the vid that are definitely contentious. Regarding the looking left first. I do say in the vid that at no point did she have an effect on anyone but she clearly had an issue of looking left first at junctions. As a driving instructor you should not ignore that. It’s clearly a weakness. What better way of making the point then marking it as a fault. Comparing this to someone who is not performing effective observation at junctions which is, as you say, high risk, is just not the same thing. I would also like to point out that this was a mock test and as such is generally marked more harshly. You are 100% correct about the directed stop. The route direction should have been pull up on the left just before the parked car etc… Yes the sat nav is not set up correctly but as far as I am aware the DVSA does not specify that you must use the sat nav used by driving examiners and in some cases recommends using a different one so the pupil gets used to varied types of sat nav. However even though I’ve been aware that it hasn’t been set up properly, I might just change it now 😉 As regards the other points you’ve made you could be correct but again when a fault is highlighted on a mock it’s to push the candidate to higher level. Again I appreciate the feedback always…

@@GetWheelDriving thanks for your reply. The only thing I would say is if you have a mock GCSE at school its not marked harder than an actual GCSE. The point is to give an accurate representation of how the person would have performed of that was a test. You're correct of course regarding the DVSA have never stipulated any satnav to use in training, but if you've got the same model then again why not accurately set it up for the benefit of the pupil? I've got the actual settings which are used which I'll find out and post here for you later should you or anyone else want to use them. I disagree looking left first is a weakness it matters not a jot as long as you've clearly looked both ways before doing anything. To stretch the point what if the junction is completely closed to the right, should I avoid looking left first where I can see, so I can look at the wall or hedge to my right that's blocking my view? From an assessment point of view on that type of fault, you can't change your mind either. The first time she did it you said it was advisory, the second time you said it was a driver fault, and then finally a serious. That's known as "frustration marking" . It's either a fault or or isn't, the frequency doesn't increase the weighting, a not worthy fault can't increase to an habitual.
