Some verbs have several uses in European Portuguese. The Verbs "Ficar", "Custar" and "Andar" are some of those that can be very confusing. In this video we want to walk you through the different uses and give you practical examples (including idioms) of when to use each in daily conversations.

Obrigado por a lição. Tenho umas perguntas. Pode se usar ficar e se tornar por "to become" ou há uma diferença entre come se usa se tornar contra ficar por "to become"? E tambem, pode se usar Andar como Ser en todos os casos? I also heard another phrase that used Ficar " ...ficou de me ligar ontem..." and was struggling with this. Is this that he/she called me yesterday and ficar is being used like ser in this case? or is it is that the person kept calling yesterday? Hmmmmm....

Olá Paul! Excelentes perguntas como sempre. "Ficar" and "tornar-se" are used quite differently. Ficar is used for more temporary things, as in to get... "ficar doente", "ficar triste", ficar irritado", while "tornar" is more of a "to become" used for more permanent things that required some effort "tornei-me jornalista", "tornei-me um especialista em vinhos". There are always exceptions but this is the big difference. "Ficou de me ligar" is a very interesting sentence structure we have that means "was supposed to call me" so don't translate it literally. So when you see "ficar in the PPS+ de+ followed by a verb" it usually means "supposed to".

Good morning. Bom dia. May I ask a question? -If I want to ask politely the person sitting, or standing, next to me, to move a bit aside, which verb should I use? Andar? Mover? Is the following request correct : "Podia andar um pouch para a esquerda, se faz favor?" - is this question OK? Should I use other verb? should I phrase it differently? in such a case, how? Muito obrigado pela sua ajuda.
