The Portuguese verb "calhar" and all its fixed expressions!

"Calhar" is a verb, but also used in many ways in fixed expressions. These are particularly hard to translate. Most fixed expressions require memorization and some study/practice, but totally worth it. Follow along the examples in this lesson and try to apply them in your writing and daily conversations.

I absolutely love the way you teach Portuguese with such warmth and explaining everything as well as possible. My boyfriend is from Portugal and I spend quite a lot of time in the country. Que interessante! Gosto de usar "se calhar" em vez de "talvez", mas nunca pensei o que significou realmente. Acho que expressões fixas são-me difíceis de usar. No entanto, vou reconheça-las quando calho-as quando ler, se calhar. (please correct this last sentence. I think I'm being too ambitious!!!)

É normal que tenhas dificuldades em usar expressões fixas. Essas expressões fixas são do nível C1. Acho que se chamam modismos. Dá o teu melhor e já está.

I thought the word 'nos' means us or we. In other words I'm surprised that your comment translates to : Leave in the comments your prediction for the final result of the match and who will score the goals. Kindly Explain. Thx

@@kingjames2226 The word "nos" in this case is the contraction of the preposition "em"+"os"="nos" (in the). Deixe-nos *is leave us. While "deixe nos"*leave in the Hope this helps!

Why does "se calhar" use indicative mood while "talvez" uses subjunctive? "Se calhar" is talking about a future probability. It is not talking about factual events. The use of indicative mood with "se calhar" is contra to the grammar for indicative and subjunctive moods. Are you able to give en explanation why this is?
