Watch and support ‪@extrahistory‬ 's original video - • History of the Board G...
Today let's learn about the early history of board games and the influence the Parker Brothers and early capitalism had on the genre as a whole!
Board games are actually what got the channel started back before I hyper focused on Warhammer 40k; when I was still working at a Board Game store! So it's really cool to get to learn more now.
Be sure to check out Extra History and support the original video!

I think one of most popular games was game which name in English would be "Star of Africa" (it is lovely colonial story about how you, players go to Africa and rob their natural resources, diamonds. Or be robbed by...seemingly other white people, since picture of robbers are very cowboy-like person with covered face and revolver. Game has three possible starting points and different roads to different African cities, every city has "treasure" (or robber), it is randomised which location has what. Most valuable is "Star of Africa" diamond, once any player find that, all players must head back to starting locations), Monopoly and game what seems have name "Trouble" in USA, "Frustration" in UK and "Kimble" in Finland (says wikipedia). And some times also Anti-Monopoly, but problem with Anti-Monopoly was, that the game was written in Norwegian language, so it was possible to play only if there was person who knew Norwegian (or Swedish) language, what was not too often. Anti-Monopoly is kind of more complex version of Monopoly, where your goal is opposite: end monopolies. I really do not remember any of rules of the game... But I think you needed to investigate monopolies, and once you had enough proves about their activities, you could end monopolies. Something like that...(maybe?) I think Trouble/Frustration/Kimble was game what adults (even elder people) liked to play with children, while Monopoly was game where youth (teenagers) played with each others or with adults, and Star of Africa was game what children mostly played with each others... Oh, and Chess, Checkers and Nine Men's Morris of course. Especially Nine Men's Morris was really popular in some point. There were game boards where one side has Chess/Checkers board, and other side had Nine Men's Morris board. And then here were card games (using regular cards), I remember best game what would be in English something like "Shit pants" (PS. or "coward" if less literal translation..), where goal is less about winning the game and more about avoid losing the game: player with most cards in the hands loses, and loser of the game is called as "shit pants". Idea of the game is to play it again and again, and calculate points, and see who is "ultimate shit pants" (of that playing session). There is variants like "fake shit", where players does not show what cards they use, they only tell what the card is. If other player suspect that the last one who added card to pile was lying, they may check the card. If player was lying, they must take all cards in the pile. But if they told truth, the player who didn't believe it, needed to take all those cards in the pile. Otherwise game was same (and loser was still called as "shit pants" not as "fake shit"). The game is more played by adults, or older teenagers.

As a kid, my siblings and I had one of the multi game boxes, Ludo, Chinese Checkers, an incomplete chess set. etc. My cousin had Game of Life. In my late teens to early 20's, the band I was in would get drunk and have overnight Monopoly tournaments, after performing on stage. Now I'm 50, and still yet to grow up, it's Cards Against Humanity, videos games and Battletech

I grew up with a few different board games, but the ones that definitely interest me the most was Dungeon! and Star Wars: Escape the Death Star.

I had a very child friendly version of Clue in which instead of a murder it was who ate a cake in what room and what they used to get to it. Monopoly was one and also a Spanish game called the game of the goose (juego de la oca). The board looks like the board of manssion of happiness.

I liked this. It is a very cool video. It told me a lot of history stuff I didn’t know. So many of those games I’ve played when I was little. My family played lots cards games with friends like Rook & Canasta. Us kids would all the board games in the video until we could play cards. 💜💜
