“I have come here to chew bubble gum and kick *ss. And I'm all out of bubble gum.”
All I'm going to say is: watch "They Live." (if you haven't already)
The iconic sunglassess scene from this cult classic is a transformative moment. Our protagonist puts a pair of special glasses and the world changes before his eyes-revealing hidden messages and the true faces of the aliens living among us.
This film, a sharp critique of unchecked capitalism and mass media, is - so I thought - a perfect opener for today's deep dive into Monopoly Go.
This "game" is a carefully engineered trap, a profit machine disguised in the innocent trappings of Monopoly without you realizing it. If only we had the magic spectacles to spot the wolf in sheep’s clothing, the Monopoly GO maker wouldn't have slyly pocketed $2 billion in less than a year…

I started playing Monopoly Go but quit when I realized that 1. It was spinning its wheels with things that really don't matter in the end 2. I wasn't going to be paying any money because, if I can't have full access on my accord for free, then I wasn't going to get involved. 3. My wife stopped playing and there went my interest 4. It just wasn't Monopoly. I love me some Monopoly and this wasn't it. I can relate, I quickly realized after playing the game that it was basically a coin master copy with monopoly themes. The mobile game doesn’t carry any value to it as the original board game did, especially after learning the history behind the game. It’s just another micro-transaction game, it made me really miss the days where I could play monopoly on the gameboy and it was closer to being like the board game. With no micro-transactions if you’re low on rolls, subscriptions, battle passes, and all.

Scale is relative. The phrase "whale" means big spender. What qualifies that is relative to what most others are spending. You've overlooked one of the biggest and most important regulations on casinos, and slot machines in particular. Slot machines MUST be set to a constant payout rate and changing that rate to make it either richer (more frequent payouts) or leaner (less frequent payouts) must be authorized by a gaming commission. This is absolutely critical because the very best way to get a person hooked on a behavior (slot machine, gaming app, or anything else for that matter) is to start with a very rich payout scheduling (even operating at a loss) and then slowly lean it out over time until the person is addicted and hemorrhaging money. Every casino on the planet would do this given the opportunity but don't because they'd be penalized beyond its utility. Because that consequence does not exist for them, every single gaming app does it as well.

Excellently put together, and very thought provoking Belinda. I've designed multiple published board games, and your video made me reflect on how we use dopamine triggers as lovingly implemented tools to enhance the fun of our games. And those same tools that can make people smile and laugh and play (push your luck, random reward cycles, community and social interaction), can drive people to poverty, addiction and loneliness the moment those interactions become monetised. This isn't a board game as I know it, it's a skinner box, you're right. Great video - looking forward to seeing where you go with your next. ☺

Just tested this game recently, motivated by news about marketing budget and revenue. For me the most "amazing" part is how well the predictive analytics / personalized offers are tuned. This game basically tries to profile you (or use an already known profile of you from Facebook / Google) as fast as possible to make you pay just a little bit. As soon as someone buys even just the lowest offer it starts to go really hard to milk that juicy sunken cost fallacy in you. Time pressure / FOMO on the left, Peer pressure / social pressure / competition on the right, battle pass like systems, collections to complete. And at the end it's a game about pushing one button, for boards of different colors.

some reverse engineers have even found out that the game already knows what you are going to roll next round, it knows in its code where you are going to land, how much you will roll. thus figuring out how long it'll take until you need to pay for more rolls. all on purpose. you can even see that some of the people you attack aren't even actual people, just bots. this can be proven if you have 2 accounts running at the same time, all of the rolls and all of the people you attack are literally the same, everything is pre-programmed

There aren't any "special", "99x value," time offers that expire in 20 minutes, every time limited event has a predefined monthly duration. Majority of players are light spenders that only buy monthly subscription or don't buy anything. On the other hand playing monopoly or other similar "games" is completely pointless unless you are a spender and buy offers everyday. You can't continue playing slots while you're eating or doing your business, etc. You certainly can't walk around with the slot machine... And once you step away, you're done. You can't start again without driving back to the casino. I know I'm trapped, but am having such a difficult time stepping away from a different game because of the social aspect and the desire to not let my team down... 😔

Another scummy tactic they use for this game is in the packs you buy. The more packs you buy, the more expensive they get with diminishing returns. The same pack of 1000 dice and a wild card might cost you $9.99 the first time, the next time its $19.99 for 1500 dice, a wild card, and maybe a srucker pack with a RANDOM five star card that you most likely already have. It just goes up from there. Have talked to several spenders who have $60-$80 dollar packs available to purchase, while my account that has never spent a dime on it has never seen a pack offered for more than $20.

This kind of shit is why parents don’t respect actual games. It sucks that the “big red dopamine button” is now the standard in this industry.

You missed an important part. If you spend money, the prices of the dice change. So because I got 100 dollars of dice one time, the only offers I get are 80 to 100 dollars. Yeah, I quit when I noticed how much it was.

Monopoly basically becoming the very thing it was criticizing and satirizing is so hilariously sad, it brings a tear to my eye. No greater sin than irony.
