Teaching young cook how to make Bacon & Eggs on Lodge Cast Iron for the first time. She is great at asking the right questions, listening & learning. By the end of the video she got it mastered. If you know how to do bacon and eggs, you've got the basics of how to use cast iron learned.
We also use the Lodge Sportsman's Grill LSG to make burgers for a bacon, egg, cheese & avocado burger. We also put in a quick fabrication of a grilling table in this video and this is the maiden voyage for the camp cooking table.

I'm a Gen Z in my last year of college and just inherited my grandfather's cast iron skillet with the ring at the bottom. I've been watching cast iron skillet videos these past few days to make sure I don't destroy this old skillet and your videos have helped me out tremendously. Thank you for making this video and for your cast iron skillet playlist.

As a person who collects, buys, & restores cast iron I loved this video. Sorry if I missed the intro but if that is your daughter she is getting some good dad-life lessons and soaking them in. Mine is just about to turn 12 and she shared my love for the cast iron collection. Already got her name on a few of her favorite skillets and the first piece I gifted her a 1900’s Griswold waffle iron because that’s what she always asked for and helped make on Sunday mornings! Just had the handles sent off to a chrome plating shop for the final touch, it’s a beautiful thing to teach ur kids too cook & grill!

I liked the video, your teaching style for this sort of thing is on point to what new chefs need. Just got a cast iron skillet for myself (brand new Lodge, 10.25" Buffalo Nickel edition) after one of my friends crashed with me and kept his on my stove. I found that it was better to cook breakfast on than the cheap teflon pans I had. I know Lodge probably isn't the best but I haven't had a chance to look for them in antique stores lately, and it's just so convenient to be able to order them.

You might need to modify your channel name now 😉. I gave my daughter her very own LODGE cast iron mini wok for high school graduation two weeks ago. She will end up with quite a bit one day (a long time from now I hope!), but I wanted her to remember when she got her very first cast iron piece. Ok, 1 comment & 2 questions. Comment, very nice, enjoyable video. I like the way you basted your eggs, my mother taught me to spoon the grease over the eggs, it never crossed my mind to use the spatula to splash over the eggs!! 2 questions, 1st, do you save your bacon grease for future cooking? My most used cooking fats are either bacon grease or clarified butter, occasionally peanut or sesame oil. 2nd question, @16:31 you're your holding a plate of today's dinner, where did the French Fries come from? Is another video in the works for fries &/or onion rings??
@TeachaMantoFish
@TeachaMantoFish 3 жыл бұрын
I use homemade wild pig lard. You can see it in my last wild hog hunt smoked pig video. I also save some of the bacon grease in the fridge if I run out of lard. The fries are so easy, I should do a quick video. They are always a hit.

You should always start bacon in a cold pan on a low heat, it will render the fat out without over cooking the proteins.

Always avoid advice that starts "You should always" cook this way... concerning cast iron and carbon steel cooking. Bacon should be room temp, should be turned frequently, thick cut, seasoned pan, on and on ... There are many variables involved. That being said, works for me.

I love watching outdoor cooking videos. And this was good advice. But contrary to popular belief, you don't get additional flavor from your cast iron from all previous meals cooked in it. Nor would you want that. Each time you cook on a cast iron, any oil or grease you use or that's rendered out of the food helps to season the pan even further than it was before. And that's not seasoning as in flavor, that's seasoning as in making a nonstick surface for the pan. So frying up bacon in your cast iron will naturally season your pan even further by using bacon grease and heat during practical use, as opposed to intentionally coating the pan and seasoning it in an oven like you would do before cooking with it. You'll still want to clean your cast iron after each use, but it takes a different type of attention to clean as opposed to a stainless steel skillet. But you certainly don't want to just burn out all the old food particles or let whatever left ever food you had in there just sit, or be simply wiped out with a paper towel.

I'd disagree. You can smell it when you fire up the skillet. 1/2 of taste is smell, it doesn't always show through but sometimes it does. I've even had people specifically say that the eggs taste better out of cast iron. It tastes different because the skillet is different.

I'm not sure why gas would be considered better than induction (I have both). My induction cooktop has eight different wattage settings and can increase pan temperature much quicker than a gas burner. Gas will heat the entire pan though. Induction only effectively heats the part of the pan in contact with the hob.

The worst is electric heating element, you have much less direct control. It is mostly a function of getting used to what you have. I like fire and feel that I have the most control with that.

very nice tutorial - my bacon leaves a layer on bottom of cast - low-medium heat the whole time - so when i add eggs - they stick - no "teasing" available and yolks break - is my skillet not seasoned enough - I use that metal spatula to remove some but the bacon smears even more....dI am frustrated. - your eggs basted is how my grandma use to make - i want to do this... thanks in advance for response

Get a good butter layer before the eggs after bacon. Works every time for me. Yes the bacon leaves the sugar behind that will cause sticking if you don't have butter or grease to make a barrier. My cast iron washes clean with just hot water and a brush.

It really is a shame but when I find a pan I don't know where its been so the first thing I do is lead test it, strip it and re-season it. All those flavors go right down the drain. Better safe than sorry I guess. I think I'm developing a cast iron addiction, yesterday I came across a modern Lodge Saguaro Cactus pan at We Care. The problem is I live in SE Tennessee, there are no cactus. lol

@@TeachaMantoFish It's as contagious as covid. Last Saturday my wife and I were antiquing in the town where her brother lives so we went to eat with them. The subject of cast iron came up when he said "I'm not looking through somebody else's junk". The next DAY he calls from a yard sale asking if "I" wanted any skillets. I explained what to look for and identified them as best I could over the phone. I ended up offering $25 for two BSR Red Mountain #8s in great condition and they accepted. He decided to keep one of them on the way to the car, he's hooked. He got the find, the good price, and I'll end up cleaning them. The cast iron beast claims another victim. It's like Bigfoot, you might not see it but it's real. lol New channel idea - "Cast Iron Cryptid"

I save all my bacon grease, so I strain it using a coffee filter on a mason jar. If frying bacon and eggs I use two separate pans usually. If using the same pan I try to scrape off the stuck bacon bits before frying eggs because I usually don't fry enough bacon for there to be as much grease in the pan as shown in this video, the eggs always stick for me if there isn't enough grease. Maybe I'm not doing right.

He made the egg greasy and soggy. I cook the egg first then the bacon. I might even get rid of the grease vefore i cook the bacon. I dont like sloppy eggs I like my bacon dry and crispy. Cast iron does cook good though if you prevent soggy food. I like my eggs dry not drenched in bacon grease. When i eat pasta I just use butter vecause sauce makes it messy. He even poured more grease onto the eggs to make them extra Greasy and soggy. He likes it sloppy .
