Ok, so this might sound kind of weird, but I SO enjoy how fast you talk. It's twice as fast as the average KZfaqr and I love it. I literally put every KZfaq video on double speed so that I can get through the information faster (some people speak SO slowly) and with yours I can to watch it on normal speed!! Plus, you maintain the same or an even faster pace when speaking Chinese, which is freaking impressive. I'm just starting to learn Chinese and your videos are an amazing resource and so fun to watch

either the language or something connected to it. I first fell in love to "the story of Minglan", then to "the untamed", then to Zhao Liying, Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo, Xnine and Uniq, then to Pu Shu and Hua Chen Yu, then I read some poems...no idea where my way will still lead me to...:-D and in that way to the language. So sad, that I now can just progress slowly due to family and job...but if I was 18 again... :-D

Modern technology has indeed made learning languages easier and more efficient. It also takes pressure off writing languages. For example, the automatic spelling checks ease you from worries of making spelling mistakes, and Chinese keyboards help you from writing wrong characters. Learners of languages should make use of technology to facilitate learning.

Great video! #2 is especially important, most people don't realize how well repetitive writing works. I took drama for 3 years, and often we were tasked with learning big monologues (and sometimes entire scripts) with less than 48 hours till performing. The best method we used to remember our lines: repetitive writing! We'd write the entire play one line at a time, focusing on that line for dozens (sometimes hundreds) of times before it was engrained into our memories, then we'd move onto the next line. This was all 5-7 years ago and I can still recite whole monologues like they're nothing.

Learn vocabulary is perhaps the most encouraging and motivating advice in this video. In Chinese I started it hoping to approch it synthetically, focusing on the one-syllable morphemes, which apparently was how classical Chinese worked. I do think one can get to HSK2 or even HSK3 that way. But by HSK4 it's fairly clear to me that there are so many metaphoric extensions into two syllable words that just memorizing the two or even three syllable words is a better method. I think vocabulary memorization is much more effective in context: you want to learn the word and then see or hear it or both in a sample sentence. There's no shortage of Chinese lessons which do exactly that (daily zhongwen is one example so is carly speaks shuo zhongwen), mandarin corner also offers vocabulary words which are then presented in context with a sample sentence. Mandarin monkey also has such material.

When learning Japanese, I used ANKI and the heisig method to learn the kanji, and did a LOT of listening to native speakers, watching TV etc. Now that I am in the beginning stages of learning Mandarin, I am recognizing the hanzi even when they have been simplified, or at least I can often guess what it is replacing. That's kind of fun. I was liking Duolingo for chinese, but it started getting into complicated compound sentences rather quickly and I found myself getting frustrated at that when I thought I should be learning more simply sentences just across a broader topic set.
@billambers7756
@billambers7756 3 жыл бұрын
I am learning japanese too, my level is now at N4 and i know 400 kanjis but i wanted to ask if you have problem with reading the hanzi since you already have to learn 音読み and 訓読み of each of Kanjis in japanese. Aren't you mixing up chinese hanzi and japanese one? I want to learn korean or chinese after i get a real good level in japanese that's why I ask you
@BeekeepingFromScratch
@BeekeepingFromScratch 3 жыл бұрын
@@billambers7756 Well since I am not really writing, I don't think it makes a whole lot of difference. You don't mistake Thank You and Danka for instance do you? Now if you plan on writing a lot of Kanji or Hanzi by hand, then perhaps I could be a little concerned, but probably not very much so.

A big tip is when you have basic vocab and grammar down is to keep a journal. No need to write deep thoughts in there just stuff like “today the weather was nice.” Etc just talk about your day and if you use new words put a small “word bank” at the bottom of the page. And just write everyday before you sleep or something!

Most or all of Korean, Japanese, and Vietnamese words borrowed from Chinese before 1500, so many words end in --k, --p,,--t, --m, when North Chinese dialects sounded like current South dialects-- Cantonese, Hokkieb, Shanghai, etc.

@tymanung768
@tymanung768 2 жыл бұрын
The Mathews Chinese Dictionary shows which characters that now have N pronunciation without those syllable end consonants USED to have them, but does NOT tell WHICH consonants were abandoned. Perhaps a newer dictionary does that? If so, 1 could easily make educated guesses about each character s older pronunciations, which are similar to modern Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, and most modern Chinese dialects. Mathews dictionary is still in print and for sale on internet Good luck!!! Zhu ni, hao yunqi!!-

I also practice repeat listening. I would download an anime for instance, watch it with subs so I know what's happening. Then I would listen to it on my ipod over and over again (not back to back necessarily) and I would increase how much of it I would understand. After while, I had picked up enough that I didn't need to indoctrinate myself with the english subs first and I would still understand much of it, but that method requires you mix up material, because for whatever reason...a program, whatever that program is, somehow tends to use a lot of words often and never other words, so mix it up so you pick up new things.

Really loved the video, and your advices are really good! The only part I don't agree with is the usage of simplified characters. Of course it's a subjective choice which character to learn, but from a personal experience I'd say that the traditional ones are way better: they not only look prettier, but I noticed that when you write them down they look better than if you were writing the simplified counterpart, and also by learning traditional ones, it is going to be easier to recognize simplified ones, but from simplified to traditional it isn't that immediate. I've seen University colleagues with great reading ability (in simplified) not regognizing almost any traditional character, which is sad and last but not least: not many people learn traditional, so you look cooler lol... just joking. but it's nice to experience the "true"* writing system, and native speakers (both Mainlanders and Taiwanese) will be very impressed with your traditional skills, if we can call it that lol. *i don't wanna offend anybody! Both simplified and traditional characters are the "true" system, and both have truly beautiful characters, but it's undeniable that some simplified characters are REALLY ugly, like 廣 (t) / 广 (s)... c'mon, they didn't even try lmfao. Learning 繁體字 is worth the effort, and god don't let me even start talking about 注音

It is difficult to learn Chinese when you’re pretty old, I started to learn Chinese from the time I was 6 years old and it was fun. But I was shocked at her Chinese! And it is sooo worth learning this language

Guys, it's 100% possible to learn how to read Chinese without learning how to write it. As long as you can recognize the characters you can just stick to using pinyin to type on your phone or computer. I'm not that advanced yet (only hsk5) but I've never had any problem on the reading aspect of the language despite only knowing how to write my own name. I also suffer from carpial tunnel so writing was a big no from the start.

中文非常好学,大多数中国人都愿意i跟你说中文,中国人非常谦虚,友善,乐于助人,爱交朋友。 因此如果你经常跟中国人呆在一起你的中文会突飞猛进的。

You've got to be smart to begin with and patient as well. Learning it takes time, effort and love and like you said it takes 'brain power' which can be exhausting. Forget reading and writing, I just want to get passed 'hi'....love how you're so expressive when you talk.

You don't need to be smart, you just need to be driven and have the right attitude. There are hyperpolyglots who flunked high school, and there are Harvard alumni brain surgeons who make $800k a year who tried (and failed) to learn a language. Academia is almost entirely irrelevant. Language learning is much closer to an art than it is to a science.

@@caseyaulbach7693 Yeah I know but you still need to be smarter then the 'average' smart person to learn Chinese, at least that's what I think.

@@caseyaulbach7693 aah, ok. I had no idea that doctors etc. tried learning languages and fail. But everyone can learn. I do not understand. Look around in the world, everyone speaks.

I been learning Japanese and korean for coming up on 2 years now, and my biggest problem was I went through so much grammar in my books and didn’t focus on vocabulary until honestly a few months ago. Since then my speaking has really improved. I started mandarin a few months ago but stopped. Now I’m back and I’m gonna try to learn as much vocabulary before I start my textbook for mandarin again.
