Learning Hail Caesar - Early Imperial Romans vs Dacians.

After a long break, I am trying to learn Hail Caesar rules again. I am getting there but I find the best way to learn rules is to play solo games. So here is a small game, just one division each side. If you see any errors then please let me know. If you are new to Hail Caesar then I hope you find it helpful.

Yes, you are right. It does help me learn, the mistakes are there, but hopefully they will be reduced in time... a long time. :)

Really enjoyable to watch. My brother and I played our first game of 2nd ed. yesterday with a division each and we spent a fair bit of time triple checking rules. This helps to affirm that we did get most of it right....

I would argue that it wouldn't test for shaken as it only just got shaken. The unit that broke prior to that one should have passed excess casualties on to its support if I remember correctly.

Just realised that the Dacians should have fired their short range weapons after moving within 6” of their enemy. I thought it was not possible to move and shoot, but I am wrong. That could made a significant difference as throws of sixes would meant the Romans would had a break test. They may have been fine, but we will never know. 😢

The basics are fine, but I still find it is easy to forget something, but that is probably just me. ☺️ Overall, I think they work well. I need to speed up though. 🙄

I dont think the Dacian should have run from being shaken as the rule reads "already shaken" which to me is prior to the combat :) Fun game! enjoyed watching!

Yes, agreed. I was told it was at any point the unit is shaken but have now confirmed it must start shaken, so in future we will play it that way. Thanks for pointing it out, we prefer to know if we get it wrong as we can then learn from it. 👍

Wonderful video. I love your teaching the game videos. I had one question on the second round of melee. When the Romans with the red scutum rolled their seven dice, why were they hitting on "3's"?

Because they won the previous melee so get a +1 bonus to hit in the next melee. It essentially replaces the charge bonus, but only the winner gets it. So the hit goes from 4+ to 3+.

@@wargameshobbyin classical latin, a “c” is always pronounced as a hard “k”. So while not generally pronounced as Dakians, As a Roman general , you would be correct.

Very nice video, though seeing the matchup I was sure the Romans were going to win and it was a bit dissatisfying to see an absolute floor wipe of the Dacian!

Yes, it is a hard job to win with Dacians against Romans. I don’t like using a point system but it can avoid imbalanced games, but only if the point system itself works. So when I next play, I will ensure I use it as a guide rather than stick to it rigidly. The Hail Caesar point system works okay to a degree, but I feel the cost of armour is too low, so I will look at that as I think that is the biggest issue. I will get back to you when I have come up with a solution. 👍

@@wargameshobbyThanks, bud! I've mostly wargamed ECW, SYW and Napoleonics up to this point but I'm jumping into a Dark Ages-era for 2024 so investigating lots of rules. I've heard great things about the Hail Caesar but they don't seem quite as elegant as something like DBA, or as flavourful as something like Saga. Playing Saxons vs Normans, or Picts vs Welsh feels like it would be more of an even match-up than a curb-stomp with early Imperial Romans against hapless irregulars...

Well, a very valid point. I used to say Day-see-an, but the car is pronounced Dack-yan so I have no idea which is correct. 😂

@@wargameshobby I looked it up so I can make sure I'm saying it right: Apparently the original name for the region was pronounced like Doe-ie but then as it moved through latin it became Da-ki-a ( somehow )and then slowly softened in Ecclesiastical latin to Da-Chi-a which morphed into anglicised Day-see-a or Day-shi-a So there's like 5 ways that are all kind of correct and you're just using the classical latin version :D Language is such an odd and fun aspect of history.
