I like that Dara’s interactions with audience members are fundamentally kind. He spins his own absurd fantasies about their lives, but nothing harsh. I’ve seen some comedians, like Jimmy Carr and Frankie Boyle, bully audience members and the poor bastards have to chuckle along or look like poor sports.

Lol yes but many times both Jimmy and Frankie aren't choosing, they are addressing hecklers who brought that attention on with a shout. 🤷‍♀️

@@hiltonian_1260 It's a fair point, but I think that, to a degree, if you're going to see someone like Carr or Boyle and you're sitting up-front, you're doing that with the understanding that being roasted is on the table. Many people like that sort of thing, even (or especially) when it's directed at them. But you're certainly correct that it can be very uncomfortable if it's not handled correctly. Carr and Boyle seem to be pretty good at gauging who's there to engage and who would really rather not. I think that tends to be a big differentiating point for comedians in that style, as it doesn't always take a lot for an audience to decide a comic's being unjustifiably cruel and turn on them. It's a very good point about the difference in Dara's approach. You don't have that same sense of social tension you can get with other styles, which, depending on your mood and comic sensibilities, can be exactly what you're looking for. Sometimes you'd just like to laugh and relax at the same time. Dara creates a safe space to share with his audience, a kind of mutual play. Seems like Frankie's moved away from that sort of "insult" material, anyway, especially as he's brought more of a progressive focus to his act.

Alternatively, you can take your driving test at 29 in rural Scotland where we had to drive 40 minutes to the nearest traffic light... well, ok, pedestrian lights, then had to circle round the area for 20 minutes until some pedestrian actually wanted to cross the street. And it's a good thing motorway driving is excluded because even a two-hour lesson would've just go you to the start of the nearest motorway before heading back.... So impatient BMWs would've been a nice distraction from the sheep

Dara's memory astounds me. Watch his full shows - he starts by getting some details from some audience members, which he works into the act all the way through, and then several times I've seen him wrap up his show with a mini-story including all the names and professions of the initial audience members he spoke to. I forget people's details 5 minutes after I meet them at a party.

Dara, I think this is one of my favourite segments of yours out of the ones I've seen. There are so many really good bits. And the riffing on the guy who learned to drive in the RAF is just outstanding. I hereby designate you.... a comedian.

Same.this show has pride of place on my shelf but this segment is especially grand! Seriously, even if the whole thing was written it would be wonderful but the fact that some of the fastest and punchiest jokes are improvised is a permanent mark in the records of comedy achievement! (at least on my shelf!)

Even more fun stalling out: on a on ramp, in stop and go traffic, during rush hour getting onto a freeway in LA. PANIC does not cover it. 😅 thank gods it WAS stop and go.

On my first driving test I'd done all my lessons in a diesel but my instructor exchanged it for a petrol car for the day of my test. I stalled seven times. By the seventh time I went into the alternative stall procedure: slapping the gear stick and yelling "Get the fuck in!!!"

I grew up in Ulster and was driving tractors on the farm when I was 10. However, it's a lot more difficult to stall a big torquey diesel tractor in a muddy field, that maxes out at 18mph than it is to stall a 1.0 litre Vauxhall Nova on the road. I always give learner drivers lots of space if I'm behind them and just chill out and let them learn. We all were learners at some point and it's impatient twats who make the process that much more stressful.

Driving tractors at a young age looks lots of fun. I was with my 2 nephews aged about 6 at a farm show admiring the smaller tractors, when a lad who looked aged about 8 jumps on one, starts it up and drives off. My nephews jaws fell tbrough the floor. Isle of Man vintage show.

The hand-held microphone thing was because bus drivers used to give a running commentary on coach tours, with a cigarette in the other hand and steering with their knees. It's all Health & Safety gone mad now.

@@rd6203 Huh, now all these horror-stories from beginners in the US make more sense. Here in Germany it would be considered extremely rude to honk at a schooling vehicles, let alone tailgate them. When you are to close and they roll backwards on a hill, you are the one at fault for not keeping a proper distance.

weeeell i think they do quiet nice with rioting i wish it would be a bit more frenchy like that here in germany either and from over here from the continent english humor includes ireland too , as i think youre irish im sorry i dont know who infected whoom but both england and ireland have the dry black english humor which is by now so often in the critics of theese wake morons so its nice to see that at least some comedians give a shit and keep on telling funny jokes

Some friends were on holiday in Ireland and were wondering if they could get away with not wearing their crash helmets on the ride to the pub when they were passed by four guys on a motorcycle not wearing crash helmets, so obviously that was “ grand” and no helmets were worn.

It’s not “grand”. It’s illegal and a guaranteed fine if the cops see it. It’s also stupid. A pebble coming back from another bike or car and hitting your head when you’re travelling at a moderate speed could be enough to cause you to crash or at the very least cause a nasty laceration requiring stitches.

@@aliasgharkhoyee9501 My brother died in a fall off a bicycle so I would approve of making cyclists wear helmets. But the fact is that the speed you are travelling towards the stone increases the force you will be hit by it. As an example, I was standing along a road at a motorcycle road race (it’s a big thing here in Ireland) and a stone that the rear tyre of a 1000cc super bike threw up hit my head. It hurt a bit but no damage other than a small bump. A week later I was riding my own motorcycle and I hit a small bird (maybe a blackbird) with my chest. Because I was riding fast, it felt like someone punched me in the chest. That’s the difference.

@@Dreyno agreed, and I think for that reason motorcyclists should only be required to wear helmets when going above a certain speed (perhaps 30 or 40 miles an hour). Or for easier enforcement, it could even be for vehicles capable of maximum speeds above the threshold. The difficulty today in British and Irish law is that there is a such big jump in legal and practical complexity when you want to upgrade from a pedal cycle to motorcycle (helmet, insurance, tax, MOT/NCT, etc) that you're tempted to skip the motorcycle and get a car. Which is much worse for traffic, air, and noise. There needs to be a lower speed motorcycle category that follows the same rules as cyclists.

@@aliasgharkhoyee9501 Electric bikes are that category. Any sort of a proper motorcycle is capable of doing too much damage to other road users. A 200kg motorcycle hitting a pedestrian, cyclist or even a car can be fatal for the other people. I once got over 100mph out of a small 125cc motorcycle. That’s basically a lethal weapon.

Great video. 😀 When I was 19 I stalled my car at a traffic lights on Deansgate, in the centre of Manchester. The starter didn't work. In those days old cars (mine came out of the womb in 1959) had what was called "positive earth" which meant the battery terminals corroded until, guess what, they could no longer conduct electricity. No amount of vaseline could counter this threat in the damp Mancunian autumn environment. So I got out of the car, used the starting handle, the engine sprang to life, and the world continued to turn.

It's funny, but in the USAF we had to teach some people to drive berceuse they grew up in large cities, like New York, and never used anything but public transportation.

To be fair, my son, a lazy sod who has never overshot the required mark by one percent, even in his (first class) MEng, never took his test until Sandhurst. Everyone without a civvy licence was shipped to Deepcut for training. Three days later, he has a licence. Git.

I wish I had the chance of this. Or knowing I was suffering with anxiety, instead that no... there really was enough room to fit two vehicles on the road. Would have made things much smoother. As it does now that I've driven a semi truck🤣

I was a natural at driving. Hell.. I'd been jailed for stealing the things years before I was legally licenced to drive them. So not me, but the funniest thing that I remember was giving one of the ladies who worked for us a quick lesson in our automatic van that we used to transport our severely disabled, wheelchair bound daughter around in. Because the staff would use the van as part of their job caring for our daughter. And said lady hadn't driven an automatic before. Every junction we came to for the first 15 minutes I was all "Nope.. We're not going back to the house until you arrive at a junction without bringing the vehicle to a crashing halt by walloping on the brake with your left foot.."
