The reason your dwarfs were running right into the channel you dug to pick up their ammo is because you never removed the ramps that are created by channelling. Channelling always creates ramps at the edges of the channeled out area, so to keep them from just running down the ramps you would want to remove the ramps after channelling out the area. Channelling down again also removes the ramps, which is fine here, but if you don't want to channel 2 levels deep, all you need to do is remove the ramps and they will be forced to use the stairs. Also: miners make good military dwarfs. Mining and some other labour's will slowly improve their strength stat, and even wielding a pickaxe as a weapon (instead of... A real weapon) they can do some real damage.

one of my favourites forts i ever did was where i had an enourmous library and it was a centre of knowladge worldwide, full of scholars from around the world bringing and writing books about philosophy, medicine, history, and more. a lot of the economy was then based on supplying that library, so a big paper industry, where you have the choice for your scribes and scholars to either use books or scrolls. in the fortress we made both, as any world class library should have, and the process to get to those looks a bit like this: Paper is made from cloth plants mashed into slurry (at a quern/millstone) and then pressed on a screw press. with the paper then you need a scroll roller, made from, ideally, a light material, so the dwarves can carry them more easily around the library. then you need someone to put together the scroll roller with the paper to create the scrolls the scribes and scholars will use to write new discoveries and knowledge. codices (what the game calls actual books) require a two step process, even more complex than the scrolls. what im trying to show is that df is an incredibly deep game where you will always be constantly learning, kinda like an untamable beast. the amount of big systems this game has for just such a small feature as it is having a library is incredible. theres a knowledge system where discoveries can be made of new twchnologies, be it of engineering philosophy or medicine. sadly this is just flavor right now, since those don't affect anything in gameplay just yet, though there are plans of course. one tip i would recommend after you feel comfortable doing so is to play with smaller chance of mineral occurance, the way it is in the legacy version. it was made as default to have all the metals everywhere for the amount of new people, but for me and many more it is honestly a worse experience. it really is a better game when you dont have absolutely everything at your fingertips such as with the higher ones. and also it really fits the story telling of the game, with the 1 or 2 metals you do get, they become kinda like the identity of the fortress; theres a kinda of rp feeling to it, what fortress are you gonna get this time? a mighty golden palace, or a proud bronze fortress with heavy bronze maces and coins and such? that of course when you get around the mark of the 100 population to properly set up the economy. anyways, enough rambling, hope you keep enjoying the wonders of discovering df, strike the earth! EDIT: forgot to mention, if you're curious as to what point the story telling of df can be taken, i would recommend the youtube channel of kruggsmash, it really is the best channel on youtube of df and it introduced many classic players including me. he tells beatutiful and epic stories of fortresses and dwarves with some great hand drawn art of the things happening. hope the comment was worth a read lol, love the vids

Archimedes described the Archimedes Screw, weird coincidence that he discovered something that shared his name. Also in general... water seeks its own level, as seen in the function of a u bend which is used in toilets and sinks to prevent gas coming up from the sewer. For the weekend, read chapter 8 and be prepared for a test on chapter 7 on Tuesday.

Just a reminder for everyone that the dwarf fortress wiki is extremely detailed and extremely helpful for learning how things work. It's not updated to the stream version yet, so descriptions of the UI for things will only reflect the classic UI, but the actual information about items, and ingame mechanics will still be accurate. It's not some minimal nearly useless wiki like some games have, it's got some very detailed explanations you won't find anywhere else (for example, how actual damage calculation works in combat, if you care to dig that deep).
@Usersunited
@Usersunited Жыл бұрын
The wiki isn't as useful as your describing. More changes with the steam version than just the UI elements. Functionality of zones, burrows, dumping, pits, military, and more are all quite different and won't behave as you expect going off the mechanical information the wiki provides. That's also not accounting for what may or may not be new bugs.

any deep dive you have on those games will seem like a kiddie pool compared to dorf. once everything clicks, and you figure enough out to play (i know someone 2000hr in and still discovering mechanics) the stories that come out of the game are insane. Look up a website called dwarf fortress stories, run by the main dev, if you want to read some wild shit.

I find the population sizing to be so funny. I had 20 dwarves for about 2 years game time then suddenly I got like 60+ dwarves entering the 3rd year. And since I had bad priorities I couldn't mine everything I wanted. So when I had 40+ dwarves enter my outpost I was absolutely shocked. Like what they're all gonna need a bedroom now! Honestly like the migration feature more compared to force hiring people in RimWorld. And it all runs so well. I've been looking to get into this game ever since Minecraft came out but the ASCII art through me off so I put it aside. It's so awesome the game has so much detail while being the way it was and it isn't even finished yet huh. I so want to get into modding this game like no other.

My first fort was going I thought surprisingly well and then we got some sort of ash zombie disease that popped off when a cat ran into an 'object' and died and then reanimated and killed I think other docile livestock, who then became ash zombies and then killed my entire population except for one dude who was fishing at the time extremely far away. A blessing of this game is that it seems like you can get a fort on its legs pretty quickly relative to other punishing colony sims. The tricky part of this one is i don't know why any of that happened, I just know that it did.

Not sure if you caught it but your seed check for the brewery is wrong. You need to be checking that there are MORE than 100 not less than. The way you have it set up, it will only make beers when you have LESS than 100 seeds, up to 500 beers. There's a button to change the operator on the condition line

Might I recommend having little stockpiles around your workshops. It's a real boost in efficiency also on your little stockpiles you can set a stockpile to pull from so the dwarfs will fill up the smaller stockpiles when stuff gets stored in your more general, larger stkpl, also putting a wine stockpile in your tavern helps a ton. Stockpiles your stockpiles.

My current fortress is the first I've done in my current world, and I'm planning on keeping this world until it becomes too unstable to use. The world the fort is in has a certain world generation feature turned off, causing goblins to not exist within the world at present. The end goal of this fort is to tunnel deep into the hidden things that release those goblins and their ilk upon the world. This fortress is also situated right in the midst of the most bustling area of the world, with numerous civilizations of all stripes right nearby. So this will essentially be an apocalypse. After this fortress has been abandoned to ruin after breaching the forbidden depths, my next fortress will be one of survivors - a group from one of the nearby dwarven civilizations settling far away from the carnage.

It would totally make sense that it came up. The water is going from an energy state where it has velocity and a certain height to no velocity and the same height, which means energy is lost somewhere. In real life the still water would have a higher level, gained thanks to the diffrence in velocity.

First heard about you from your collab with Trupen in Factorio. Very pleased that I did. Enjoy your content immensely. Don't really have any advice or tips or anything, other than the knowledge from watching some of Quill's videos years back that getting comfortable with trade and getting some kind of tradable good that you can stockpile can help immensely. If I recall, mugs were his go-to. Why? A goblet order gets you a cup (wood), or a goblet (metal or glass), or just a mug (stone). Order a bunch of 'Goblets" and forbid all materials except stone, get a bunch of mugs. Lots of stone lying around can be turned into lots of mugs for lots of profit. Having all of your trade good contain a similar word ("mug", in this case) makes it much easier to find all of the thing you wish to trade off. Just search for the word when you are requesting goods to be delivered to the depot. Anyway, cheers!

It makes sure you do not disband squads when trying to close the windows. "X" was a bad design choice.

Is it possible to just make your fort outside?
@galacsinhajto

Yes. It is just a bit more tedious than mining ,bc of construction takes a bit longer and you need a ton of materials for it. If you try it, I suggest you make it out of blocks of stone or wood. One Boulder or log produces 3 blocks. Unlike raw boulder walls, creatures can't climb them so easily. Having clay and sand can produce you infinite amounts of bricks/blocks too, it just takes some time to set the industry up

I got overwhelmed too at first but reminded myself that I'm essentially playing a very easy preset with all kinds of ores (default in Steam) in a low savagery location. I then realised I needed much less food and drinks than I initially thought. That helped me to kinda overcome the stress of feeling like I'm not doing enough and I can explore the game at my own pace. I'm gonna have Fun eventually sure but it's going to be much later than I initially thought :)

You would know water after all, being an amphibian... you are an amphibian right? Just to clarify, wouldn't want any ambiguity about that. XD.

i doubt you'll see this but a tip for you dwarfs wont share tables, its one table per dwarf, as EXTREMELY dumb as that is so having seats shared between tables is a waste sadly
