LONGER BIO
Saxophonist Bob Reynolds is an in-demand jazz performer, educator, and sideman, as well as a regular member of the Grammy Award-winning band Snarky Puppy. Born in Morristown, New Jersey in 1977, Reynolds grew up in Jacksonville, Florida, where he first started playing saxophone at age 13. Although he listened to a range of music as a kid, by his late teens he was a dedicated jazz student. After high school he honed his skills at Boston's Berklee College of Music, where he mentored with George Garzone, Hal Crook, and others. As a leader, he debuted with 2000's The Bob Reynolds Quartet, followed by 2006's Can't Wait for Perfect. That same year, he joined fellow Berklee alum John Mayer's band and spent the next five years with the pop star, touring and appearing on such albums as 2008's Where the Light Is and 2009's Battle Studies.
In 2013, he returned to his solo work with Somewhere in Between, which reached number one on digital jazz charts. He then made his Snarky Puppy debut appearing on the genre-bending group's 2014 effort, We Like It Here. Two years later he was back with Snarky Puppy for the Grammy Award-winning Culcha Vulcha. In 2017, Reynolds delivered the EP Guitar Band, which featured appearances from Kneebody bassist Kaveh Rastegar as well as fellow Snarky Puppy members Robert "Sput" Searight (drums) and Mark Lettieri (guitar). ~ Matt Collar

Don’t know why someone gave this a thumbs down. Maybe they were searching for Skinny Puppy? While I’m here, I might take up violin as a second instrument tho. Also can’t stop singing this melody.

Hi Bob! Will you talk about the decision to learn the horn lines as a section, in the studio, without sheet music vs. coming into the meeting with the music learned or at least written. Thanks for all the great content!

As far as I know, Snarky literally bring in the majority of the music for everyone to learn and rehearse on recording day - and it's always been that way. Larnell once told the story of how he learned all of the music for We Like It Here on the plane journey to the live sessions, then played it physically for the first time when the cameras started rolling. Insane.

@@samcooke343 HA, that's true! I was in the studio audience litterly sitting beside Larnel Lewis.. and he nailed it! The story is on the DVD We Like it here.. the drummer that was planned to come, had issues with his visa or something, so they called Larnell Lewis just days before the recording started.

Question for your next Q & A. What is the musician's profit difference if a customer buys a CD on Amazon compared to musician's website?
@curls6778
@curls6778 5 жыл бұрын
Amazon usually marks up the product about 100% if it's not something well known. So for amazon to sell it for 15$, the musician would have to sell it to amazon for 7,50$. Depending on the label deal the label gets, for example, 40% of that. This can be different for well known products. If you buy the CD from the labels website, the label gets it's percentage as well. If you buy from the musician directly, all the money goes to the musician. Wether buying from the musicians website counts as bought from the label or from the musician is subject to the specific label deal. The musician is usually not allowed to sell their product cheaper than the label does to prevent competition between the two. The thing is, if enough people buy from amazon, amazon will order more cds to have some ready to ship. So this can turn out more lucrative for the musician in certain situations. But generally buying directly from the musician is your best bet if you want him to be able to afford some food. ;) Source: experience

Wow, that's so cool! Very interesting! So, for instance, Michael League write the some, give it to you on GarageBand or another program, and he'll just have played or recorded a rough version on keyboard, etc, something like that? Then you guys just basically listen and translate it to your horns?
