I always seem to only encounter a cyclist at the most awkward moment I.e. into a blind bend, or a narrow road, I never seem to come across one on a wide open clear bit of road. #SodsLaw

You just have to be patient with us, Mate. I'm a driver and also a cyclist as well and trust me, I know how infuriating it could be when passing a cyclist. I guess my advice is, whenever you see a cyclist, try not to see him or her as a cyclist. See him as a brother, see her as a sister, as a father, a mother a child or an adult. Overlook the status quo. See the cyclist as a Human being. Probably going through hardship, struggle, whatever life throws at them and, the only solace they find themselves in is, with this rudimentary contraption made of chains, a pair of wheels, and some pedals.

Please share this with every driver and instructor you know, we’re getting killed all the time by good drivers who don’t know or follow every bit of this advice. Hats off to your student for an exemplary performance, particularly the spacing which was inch perfect. If you do this we’ll know and will do our best to help you pass us safely. 10/10

One mistake drivers sometimes make when overtaking cyclists is not noticing that other cyclist coming towards them. I can't tell you the number of times I have been pushed into the gutter because a driver, giving plenty of room, has swung so far across road as to almost hit me. This is especially common when they are playing follow-the-leader and letting lead driver do observation for them.

That's why I as a cyclist ALWAYS use really bright flashing front lights day and night. That's separate from a good front constant headlight for night time too. Similarly at the back, I have two really bright flashing reds. I'm not going to be missed easily. Plus good mirrors on both handlebars. I own a car and drive a van mostly at night for work and it is shocking the numbers of cyclists who have either no or absolutely sh1t poor lights on their bikes and change position on the road erratically or at a whim. Darwin Awards candidates.

I look forward to doing this when I do my driving tests. I just got the applications sent off last week. So hopefully I will be able to start my test soon. There are often cyclists in the area I live in as well so I look forward to making my first bicycle overtake.

Generally well done. As a driver and cyclist, I find no reason not to give the cyclist the entire lane. Whether I'm passing half or fully in the right lane creates no difference to me but it is scertainly appreciated by the cyclist. Cheers!

The way that Zafira pulled out from that junction was shocking - did it see the cyclist? Would this have been a different situation if the cyclist was 2 seconds further ahead? Dread to think.

Well handled. I wish all drivers were as considered in this situation. Also interesting that the pass straddled the two lanes and there's not an outcry from other cyclists (just one query about it that I can see), unlike yesterday's video ;-)

I hate coming across cyclists, it's always at the worst possible moment with me (blind corners... that's what I get for living in the Highlands). I don't hate them, not by a long shot! They have every right to use the road as I do! I just hate passing them as I'm aware of just how vulnerable they are! I always pass them as I would overtake a car if I have the space. I do have a tiny problem with those who cycle on a bypass and not use the path along side the road, yeah it's not a cycle path but surely it's safer?

It's illegal to ride on the pavement unless it's a marked shared-use path or whatever, and even then it can be safer on the road if you're a fast pedaller and there are people walking on the path. If you don't usually cycle, it's well worth running a few of your errands on your bike so you get a sense of what it's like and what's safe for a cyclist to do. Anyway, good on you for being a considerate driver.

@@anglaismoyen I'm well aware it's illegal to cycle on a pavement unless otherwise permitted. I don't know of any bypasses that have pavements though, that is what I was getting at in my 3 year old comment, cyclists not using the path on bypasses (which admittedly looks like a hard shoulder). Again I stress I do not hate cyclists but I do wish some of them would try and put themselves in a safer situation. Cyclists can't match vehicles travelling at 60 mph obviously. If this comment comes off as rude I apologise.

This comment isn't about this video but it's something I've noticed while driving. When people drive Audi's, BMW's, Mercedes white vans and taxis they're are most aggressive road user and 90% of them overtake when the speed limit is reached. They cut in front of you when overtaking so you have to drop back to a safe distance again, slowing you down especially on the motorways whenever they've overtaken you. Finally the way they hold the steering wheel hand on the top so there arm is over the air bag and slouched in their seat and hand on the gear lever. It's just something I've noticed after 9 months of driving and wanted to know if you've noticed it as well 😂

One thing that I’ve noticed after 25 years of driving and 20 years of teaching people is that virtually everyone on the road is too quick to point a finger at someone else rather than look at and improve their own driving. I have 1 Audi and 2 BMW’s btw 😂 Thanks for your comments. Ashley

For me it was jaguars, that is to say mostly jaguar owners. I know this doesn't apply to all drivers of those nice cars like the Audi, Mercedes and BMWs you've mentioned but even I've had my fair share of those clowns in my short years of driving pass me despite being at speed (especially trannie vans and sprinters). Daft thing is I'd pass said drivers 20 minutes later in my last car, a 2004 freelander which I've sold, and my current car; An early 2007 Honda crv. Either 60mph isn't fast enough or those drivers were allergic to 4x4s.

Depends on the car. For example, my dad's BMW is spot on. The most accurate speedo will be the one your GPS provides

@@jwalker7567 yeah for example my Corsa will say I'm doing 30mph when I'm actually doing 27mph. The difference between doing 27mph and 30mph in a 30 zone is quite substantial and I ended up pissing off a lot of drivers before I realised this.

Looks good (I'm familiar with the camera position/wide angle etc). There's quite a bit in the Highway Code, and it uses an image in R163 which illustrates the amount of clearance recommended. The road appears to be in good condition, but near where I live, after the hot Summer, there are lots of relatively long surface cracks and general subsidence - not good for cyclists. The only other possibility is that it's possible for someone behind to overtake you AND the bike in front (which they might not see?), if you decide not to overtake yet; I've seen this happen on a road with double white centre markings.

👍 only one maybe small niggling point I could make at 0:34 ... (unless I'm not seeing it, because I'm only using a small screen), there's no need to 'actively' close the gap... you'll have got there by just after the van anyway by pure speed difference

What would your approach be for getting past a group of cyclists, say 6-10 all riding single file on a country lane with varying gaps between each one but none really big enough as a landing space for a car ie overtaking a few at a time isn’t an option. It’s the whole group or not at all.

Wouldnt of putting the indicater on at that moment signalled to the driver behide that you were turning right and might of tryed to overtake as you turning because thats what they do because they cant wait. new driver myself.

I always been taught that you should always leave the whole carriageway for the cyclist. Does this still apply?

Sometimes yes, but not always. Can you think of any scenarios where being too far out would put everyone in more danger including the cyclist?

@@ashley_neal It could cause a collision especially if you didn't do a mirror check or signal there could be a motorcycle overtaking.

Sorry Ashley, I have to disagree with you here. I have read the Highway Code and under rule 163 you have give motorcyclists, cyclists and horse riders at least as much room as you would when overtaking a car. Apart from that good content, otherwise good content.

Its a shame that most cyclists don't deserve this much consideration. When you see them jumping lights and riding without consideration for the highway code, overtaking them safely is a bitter pill to swallow. 🚴 🚴🚴. 🚗🚙🚐

Statistically speaking, motorists break more laws than cyclists on the daily. Can't treat everyone like the enemy based on misconceptions.

@@pafaccount4454 Actually using statistics on a pro rata basis cyclists are 34.58% more likely to commit a moving traffic offence than a motorist. There was a huge leap after the introduction of 20mph zones. Prior to that, it was around 20-22%. but more cyclists can now "officially" speed..!
