Overtaking buses causes many learners concerns, not being sure when the bus will pull away, having concerns the bus will not see them or not being able to see round the bus are common concerns.
It however is very important you are confident at dealing with overtaking buses for your UK practical driving test, if you are faced with the situation on your driving test you are expected to deal with it confidently and safely, sitting behind the bus for 3 or 4 minutes while passages get on and off would be seen as being overly hesitant and in some cases could cause you to fail your driving test!
In this video I show some examples of overtaking buses and what to look out for to successfully complete the manoeuvre.

Sometimes (at least with buses in The Netherlands) you can also see through the rear window that someone has pressed the stop button, causing a red light behind the driver inside the the bus to come on. Seeing this you know the bus is going to pull over at the next stop and allows you to fall back a bit, in order to widen your field of view around the bus and continue to have a good view while the bus starts to slow down. This way you can sometimes immediately pass the bus without even stopping, or if you can't it will be easy to not be stopped so close to it that you don't have a clear view of the road ahead. As an added bonus, if you overtake the bus before it's come to a complete stop, the doors haven't openend yet and you're much less likely to encounter passengers getting off and immediately crossing in front of the bus.

Yes that is very true, something I did not mention it in this video. On UK buses however it is quite hard to see the red "Bus stopping" light, as it is at the front of the bus and often the passengers get in the way. So only occasionally seen, if you are looking for it.

Thank you for this. driving instructors don't often cover this so when I was behind a bus for the first time my hazard perception wasn't sharp enough and I went around the bus as soon as it pulled up to drop someone off. Only one person was dropped off and they indicated right quickly and I wasn't ready to stop so this would've probably been a serious driving fault if it was my test, cheers for clearing everything up

Great video. I’m a bus driver on Merseyside and I wish more people would take care when overtaking. You never know if a passenger who has just been dropped off or a pedestrian could decide to walk in front of a bus. I wish people knew how to drive around roundabouts with a bus. Typically they probably shouldn’t unless the roundabout is huge and there’s plenty of space but there are many where the bus or HGV needs to dominate to safely get around. There needs to be more awareness and if In doubt just stay behind and allow space because eventually you’ll get your chance to pass safely

You give priority to buses because they can not see very well, H/Code rule 223. Not just at bus stops. You give priority to buses & trams always but ESPECIALLY pulling into and out of stops.
@Rockhopper1
@Rockhopper1 Ай бұрын
Buses no longer have priority to pull out; they lost that right many years ago when they changed the operating licences in the UK; they are classed as private vehicles. Some old instructors and examiners need to be made aware of this. The old sticker on the bus's rear with an arrow reminding drivers that the bus has priority has had to be removed. It's important for all drivers to treat buses as they would any other vehicle on the road. Buses should be given the same courtesy and consideration when it comes to merging, changing lanes, and pulling out into traffic. However, they do not have any special rights or priorities.

Actually the policy is to never put in neutral for safety reasons except if you're going to turn the engine off. At the bus stop the hand brake is always on and then when it's time to pull out: foot on the brake, handbrake off, mirror, signal, manoeuvre. No gear change involved. But you're right, when you see the brake lights turning on, chances are the bus is about to pull out.
@UKDrivingTest
@UKDrivingTest 5 жыл бұрын
@@dvdsbl Yes I did not think of leaving it in drive, I use manual too much so handbrake and neutral tend to go hand in hand, but not so much with auto. Do the buses have electric handbrakes? Just thinking there must be some sort of signal sent when the handbrake goes on and you are in drive, as normally when you are in drive and release the footbrake the engine connects and starts to move, obviously not good if the handbrake is on.

The only requirement for selecting Neutral is when the driver leaves the cab. Otherwise the bus WILL always be in drive. What is my source? Bus driver training. The foot brake is for the uphill start when releasing the handbrake. Brighton buses have an alarm/warning if the doors are opened and the bus handbrake isn't applied.

Hi, great vid. Do you ever need to signal when overtaking?
@UKDrivingTest
@UKDrivingTest 4 жыл бұрын
Depends on what you are overtaking, and where you are. For a bus generally a signal is not needed as they stop on wide roads and you can position near the centre line to make it clear that you are looking to overtake. Also sometimes a signal can give the impression you are turning right (if there is a right turn nearby) You might decide to signal if: - The road is narrow so you can't position in such a way that the overtake is obvious - The view ahead is restricted so you need to overtake slowly, the signal will give a heads up to any oncoming traffic that may not be visible to you. This is just a few examples for buses, ultimately when overtaking a stopped bus, cyclist, horse, road maintenance vehicle (road sweeper, bin lorry) etc. you should signal is necessary. But if overtaking a moving car 100% signal every time, as the car might move lanes, you need to tell them you are about to pass so they know to stay in lane. The stopped buses, cyclists etc are unlikely to suddenly move lanes, therefore signals always essential.
@keith6400
@keith6400 5 жыл бұрын
Whilst trailing a bus at a suitable distance to get a better overall view round it you can also observe where the bus stops are and whether there are bus lay-bys at the stops These can make life easier and are present on more urban roads coming into bigger towns they make the overtake sequence a lot easier. Locally we have a main road which is three lanes but the middle one is mainly for right turners at the various side roads. If the side road is on the right the flow down the middle is consistent with your direction of travel. The rest of the middle lane is hatched off. Occasionally there are two lanes, no lay-bys and right hand lane will get you through, before returning to left lane. In any case you have got to make it look like you are trying to get past! Knowing the bus routes can help a lot at busy roundabouts too as they go round them slowly and block off traffic.

Great video. What happens if the bus is not parked correctly and is creeping into the other lane (in the wake direction)? And there is a solid line between our lane and the oncoming traffic
@UKDrivingTest
@UKDrivingTest 4 жыл бұрын
Bus creeping into the other lane? If there was not room to pass then don't try to pass. In my experience this is extremely rare, as normally bus routes are on the more main roads where they are wider, also if the bus driver was creeping into the other lane they could also block oncoming traffic, so it is unlikely they would have even passed their bus driving test. If it was a solid white line you can still legally overtake, but must make sure it is safe, if the solid white line is there then it is likely to be quite risky, so best to stay behind. Also it is again very unlikely to happen as they would not put a bus stop next to solid white lines due to the high risk involved. An example of overtaking on solid white lines (look at the 2nd half of the video): kzfaq.info/get/bejne/frKop8KfqdOoZaM.html

I have a very difficult question that I cannot find the answer to. If there are a line of 10 parked buses, each parked without gaps between them, can I overtake them if I will likely get to the final bus before meeting an oncoming car or should I wait for that oncoming car? The reason I ask is that if I overtake, then traffic, on the whole, will only be delayed for the length of time it takes me to overtake the single final bus while the oncoming car waits. Compared to if I wait for oncoming car then traffic will be delayed, on the whole, for the length of time it takes to pass 19 parked buses. Because at time I stop at the first parked bus, I will need wait for the oncoming car to travel the length of 9 buses away from the parked bus nearest them (the final bus furthest from me). Then they will pass the 10 buses while I also wait. 9+10=19. Therefore traffic is delayed 19 times more overall if follow the rule to give priority to oncoming traffic. Personally I am fine with that if that is the most Highway Code compliant thing to do even though it may confuse drivers behind me if I wait. But I need to know are my being silly or is it best to follow the rule strictly and this is just an edge case

So are the buses stopped on opposite sides of the road? One in your lane, one in oncoming lane? They make bus stops like this intentionally, slightly staggered from the bus stop on the other side of the road, why? So if two buses are stopped they have not blocked the road and drivers can still pass. If the bus driver indicated after you had passed them then that seems quite normal. Difficult to comment to far without seeing the incident live, but possibly you could have been going slower when doing the overtake (especially as there is always the risk of pedestrian walking out when overtaking a bus). Or maybe keep more clearance / distance from the double decker bus, this will make it easier to see what is in front of them. But equally you could have done all you could do and maybe the smaller bus was not annoyed at you, but more annoyed that a double decker stopped behind them and made it difficult for them to pull out, so don't take it personally. This seems inherently dangerous to me...what if another vehicle comes fast? Guess it is just part of driving...just seems dumb
@UKDrivingTest
@UKDrivingTest 4 жыл бұрын
What seems dangerous? That buses have priority? - The bus driver will still need to look before pulling away, just they might moving, very slowly, even if traffic is behind and the traffic behind is expect to slow and let them go. - Most bus stops are on 30mph roads, so if anyone is going fast that is their own fault, speed limits are there for a reason. - If a bus stop is on a higher speed road the bus driver may technically still have priority but as experienced and trained drivers they will more often than not avoid using the priority and just wait for it to be clear I have never experienced it causing danger, unless of course the drive following is driving dangerous (high speed, lack of anticipation / awareness), but like I say that is their own problem.

@UKDrivingTest
@UKDrivingTest 4 жыл бұрын
@@yishaipiano3928 ah ok I see. You would need to assess the individual situation, things I would consider are: - How long will the bus be waiting, look at how many passengers are getting on / off, is it a major stop or just a minor stop. - How busy is the road? - Is it a fast moving road, or a road where people are know to drive fast? I think I know the example you are talking about on the video, in this example as far as I recall the bus had quite a few passengers to drop off, the road was a 30mph limit which is normally fairly quiet and before I lost my view the road appeared quiet. So I made the decision to overtake. There is always going to be an element of risk in any driving activity, of course it is your personal choice to decide what level of risk you are going to take.

Advice at 3:50 is so wrong. "A right signal is not required". Where did you get this idea from? This is clear example of misinterpretation of unclear Highway code wording (which it is). You are making overtake manoeuvre, so should indicate (signal) about your intentions, even if there are no oncoming or following traffic. Remember: Mirrors - Signal - Manoeuvre. PS because of unclear Higway code wording some road users do not signal anywhere at all. Be safe.
@UKDrivingTest
@UKDrivingTest 3 жыл бұрын
When the bus is stopped they are essentially a parked vehicle, so not like overtaking a moving vehicle, where a signal would be more beneficial. Would you signal to go round every parked vehicle or obstruction on the road? Normally you would not as it is overusing the signal which can confuse other driver thinking you are turning right or just general confusion. On a driving test you would likely fail if you signalled to go round every parked vehicle. It is not necessarily wrong to signal to go round a stationary bus, but in this precise situation on the video it benefits no one. If overtaking a bus on a busier road with oncoming traffic a signal could be more beneficial, but depends on the situation.
@nemod3338
@nemod3338 3 жыл бұрын
@@UKDrivingTest Highway code 103: use them to advise other road users before changing course or direction... and: make sure your signals will not confuse others... Yes you need to inform about your actions especially if you entering in to opposite lane. Second one is not an excuse not to signal at all. Regards parked cars. It depends how many car there are. If parked car/obstacle is solo or in an unusual part of the road it always better to signal before overtaking. But if I encounter chain of cars, then I signal only on first car, not the rest whenever I hide in gaps. It helps a lot for drivers at the back, especially if you are driving big vehicle, which will obstruct the view to the following road users. Busses nearly always signal at any obstacle. In your case 3:50 there are no side road on the right before the bus, so you will not confuse anyone, by signalling. Don't forget signals are not only for drivers but for other road users too, like cyclists, or pedestrians popping out in front of the bus. Also in your case if you have showed signal, car entering road at 3:48 would seen you making manoeuvre and probably wait for you to finish instead entering the road. You cause confusion by not showing the signal. Because of ease of signalling requirements there are drivers who do not signal at all. I used to get in to a lot of situations when drivers fail so signal and nearly hit me.
