Learning Timber Framing - My first build

I have newer build Timber framing before. I started searching the internet and bought a book by Steve Chappell from eBay about timber framing. I made a sawmill inspired by similar sawmills found on KZfaq. . I bought 80 larch logs.
DIY timber frame requires basic skills but training is not necessary - read Steves book and you should be good to go. Almost all boks about timber framing is written in English and I live in Denmark so I took up the challenge and learned imperial measurements it took some time to get familiar with.
Lots of comments on My video Thanks! I can't answer all of them but: Yes you can build a similar construction of steel but I couldn't afford one at the time. "It is easier to do this or that or - it takes too long or Time Time Time.." I´d rather stay home near my family making a timber frame than working the extra paying off a loan paying someone else for making me a standard garage! Many ask why use so large dimensions -simply because the beam has to have some flesh to it to allow for correct size tennons and mortises. Wood is a non expensive material it is also natural and sustainable material and it can be sourced locally at the price of firewood. Yes it takes more effort and skill to build a timber frame but the result also has an aesthetic dimension to it I think.
I use KZfaq as a tool to gain new knowlage and inspiration. I will probably not build a timber frame ever again but it was fun doing it and I learned a lot during the process. Stop watching KZfaq right now and do something meaningfull with your brain and hands instead.

There has been a few questions regarding the book I refer to in the video. I bought a few but this book is the one to get hold of: written by Steve Chappell: A Timber Framer's Workshop: Joinery, Design & Construction of Traditional Timber Frames. Buy the latest edition 2011 there is a lot more photos and illustrations than in previous copies. I also bought his square from Fox Maple which I have used for many applications afterwards the build of My timber frame project. Claus Pihl

+Claus Pihl awesome video - This video has really inspired me. Can you share if you found plans online for the sawmill? Also, how many blades did you go through on this project? Did you have a plan or did you design the barn yourself using something like google sketch up? Thanks for sharing - great video.

I went to Costa Rica in the Spring 2016 to study with Steve. He was fast and used complex joinery, quick trigonometry and seemed like a genius. I felt in over my head and just want to imagine this can be simple. Your effort captures what seems simple about it. No doubt there's still lots of math and angles to understand, but you crushed it. Did it and documented it and life went on. I'm still getting ready for my first. Thanks for the inspiration and motivation to do it!

Nowadays you have to be an expert or have a degree if you want to build what regular people did back 150 years ago. People hasn't got any faith in them self any more because of our lifestyle. If a settler wanted a house he built it even without a master degree. This is one of the essential things I hate in modern times. I have mails from people writing that I am lying (honestly I have newer even seen a timber frame in real life before) sad but true. But it says alot about people not believe what we humans can if we throw our ipads away and start using our hands. Thanks Claus

Claus Pihl I agree! I think of you're interested in building your own, it is step in the right direction! I want to build my own house. I know it won't be the best in the world, but that's ok! I know it will be hard, but I can do it, and so can other people.

It's so beautiful Claus. I can only imagine the monumental patience, the long hours of toil that you put into building it. My whole body throbs with imagined pain just watching you shape and coax those heavy timbers to the form your build required. The muscle aches, the anxiety and pressure to finish it. I wish you could post more build videos. Good luck.

Wow! And I thought it was something that I built a 14'X18' cabin with a loft in it was a great feat? This dwarfs it! I love the scarf joints that you put in there, as well. Nice! I Thought it was a home until I saw the roof panels going on and then realized that it was going to be a barn or garage. Beautiful shop! What I will say about timber framing is, anyone can do it if you are willing to apply yourself and have a lot of patience and attention to detail. Too many people believe that it is too monumental of a task, but it isn't really. And in the end, it is so rewarding when it all comes together. Well done! Cheers!

Where are based out of? I see comments like these all the time and I also want to do same; I think it would be great to start a guild of prospective builders to support each other. Would love to help some experienced builders on their projects as a learning strategy. All the timber framing courses I see are too far for me. I'm based in Winston-Salem

Awesome and inspiring. Thanks for sharing Claus! I'm on a similar journey. I didn't make the Saw Mill but I did make my Mortise Chisels and Slicks (I'm a Blacksmith). They'll hang over the Fireplace when the house is finished. If you're going to create a story, make it a good one......" “When we build, let us think that we build forever. Let it not be for present delight nor for present use alone. Let it be such work as our descendants will thank us for; and let us think, as we lay stone on stone, that a time is to come when those stones will be held sacred because our hands have touched them, and that men will say, as they look upon the labor and wrought substance of them, 'See! This our father did for us.” John Ruskin
