As an instructor I always taught kids "make a fist, save your wrist" if you drive a fist into the snow your wrist is mostly locked and immobilized and much harder to fracture

Lollll I'm a beginner snowboarder and I recently fell (more like flew down) forward, somehow made a fist automatically, which I landed with it on my sternum. My wrists were fine but I couldn't breathe for good solid half a minute 😂

That's funny cause I'm a Marine and one thing we're taught is if you're falling forward, to tuck your chin, punch the ground and roll forward on that shoulder. It's called a combat roll.

I'm 68 yo and have been boarding for 23 years and always wear a helmet. It has saved my head a number of times. A few years ago I gave my college age daughter this advice about grabbing your chest and letting your body take the fall and she still broke her wrist. I should have bought her wrist guards. The natural reaction to break your fall is hard to overcome for some. But I can't wait to forward this video to her!

Sometimes its better to break your wrist than to break something else. I have a story about this Im a mountain biker I hit a jump and in the air I hit a tree. My bars twisted and my bike stopped and I was send over the bars down the landing of the jump. I was falling side first and I stuck my arm out instinctively. I hit my arm, elbow and shoulder really hard. It took a few minutes for me to move and part of my right arm because all the muscles tensed up. But if my arm elbow and shoulder hadnt absorbed a lot of the hit I could have broken my collar bone which is an ass to heal or by ribs or tore something in my shoulder or slammed my head into the ground and gotten a concussion. My friends that I was riding with said I got really lucky that I wasnt hurt worse because of how hard I fell. Sometimes its better to break a bone that can heal than to get a concussion that messes with your brain when your older or a torn ligament or tendon that cant heal.
@Sourwhatup
@Sourwhatup Жыл бұрын
In my opinion. Falling putting your elbows out works very well to absorb impact and then your body as a secondary impact if a hard fall. I would say avoid putting your arms out at all costs as I've seen quite a few broken arms and wrists, I myself have torn my rotator cuff, learned a good lesson that day.

Last year while learning to snowboard I took a hit to the helmet so bad it got me a concussion that lasted me the entire trip. Safe to say I'd have died if I didn't have it on... I caught an edge cause some people were standing in the middle of the slope after a turn and forced me to try to transition from heels to toes: Transitioned kinda nice, was going backwards at like 30-40kmh caught the edge and plummeted to the ground. My head hit the snow so fkin hard. Thankfully I had a friend with me who made me company before I recovered myself (10-15 minutes)

If your legs are on fire, you're not doing it right. I would guess you are spending a good portion of the time heel sliding. Once you learn to point the board straight and carve, or even slide turn down the hill, your legs will feel much better at the end of the day.

I have no problems snowboarding, however, I oftentimes have to pause in the middle of a run due to quad fatigue. I've seen good snowboarders connect smaller turns of maybe 10 degrees frequently switching from heel to toe effectively riding straight, presumably to avoid prolonging a wide turn across the slope which will blast your quads on the heel side especially. I can do this myself but it doesn't resolve the issue for me.

Another quick question ... how do you go about increasing speed while avoiding catching an edge? I've heard some say that riding flat based will get you going faster but as far as I know you're technically always on an edge even if the pressure is slight, and imo doesn't sound like a great idea on steeper terrain to just send it flat unless you're looking to wipe out.
