I am trying my hand at soldering of any kind, for the first time today! I've been in possession of these beginner soldering projects I picked up almost 2 years ago, and it's time I learn new skill!
Will I successfully assemble the PCBs? Will I accidentally blow out a LED? Will I manage to do all this WITHOUT BURNING myself? Stay tuned and find out, sports fans!

My grandpa was an Electrician so he taught me to solder by age 6. :) That's probably one of the reasons I became an electrical engineer. Every little step helps. As a help though for flux, there are flux syringes that are much easier to control and squeeze right where you want. The flux pens are not the greatest. Lastly, the solder wick is meant to be on top of the solder to soak up the excess when you heat it up then pull it away versus trying to melt the solder and drag the wick across it.

As someone with 10 years soldering experience, it definitely is something you’ll get better with practice. For a first timer you did well. Biggest thing I always tell people is be careful not to overheat the actual solder point, especially when it comes to printed circuit boards like this. Don’t panic, eventually it becomes second nature and you won’t even have to think about what you’re doing. your brain just tells your hands “solder!” And proof it is done. I find it quite relaxing to be honest.

Great video, Angela. I learned soldering for a merit badge when I was in the boy scouts. While I am by no means a master, it's been really helpful to me over the years. It was fun to see you jumping into it and figuring out this new skill. 🙂

The soldering iron tip absolutely must be tinned. You should also clean the oxide off on a damp sponge. Leave the iron on all the time. It needs to be at full temperature. The actual tip temperature lags what the temperature readout says. Also use rosin core solder. I’d also recommend finding some actual tin-lead solder. It’s much easier to work with. My procedure is to wipe the tip on the sponge. Put a little solder on the tip. Apply the tip to the connection. I also rock the tip to ensure the molten solder makes contact. Feed a little more solder into the connection until you get the right amount. Remove the iron and don’t move anything. When cooled the connection should look shiny.

I get that completely! I don't air brush much for the same control concerns. The first time I did I felt like I struggled the entire time. But I am building up my courage to get back to it, I hope you do too!

Last week I ordered a soldering iron and a set of radio components. I decided to learn how to solder according to the instructions for assembling a lightsaber :) A complete RGB saber with different sounds, an LED controller and gesture response will cost $30... A real Sith Lord assembles the saber himself ;)

My suggestion is to get flux core solder so you don’t need to put flux down before hand

Invest in a good quality soldering iron. If you’re going to be doing this kind of thing often or semi often. Also some solder flux and a good iron cleaner.
