Kindergarten is such a special year, and so much happens! Many of your Kindergarten students are mastering letters and letter sounds. But what about actually reading and writing CVC words? It's a huge shift to go from individual letters to entire words!
In this video, I share strategies to help students navigate this important shift in their journeys as readers!

I home school my 10 yr old in the spectrum since my daughter was diagnosed with breasts cancer. I've researched so many websites. I'm so blessed to have found you. Although I've gotten through a lot of what you've covered learning the reason why phonics is taught in a certain way makes total sense to me now. We also homeschool because one year in public school was very detrimental to him. He regressed two grades. Praise the Lord, he's doing better. I will continue to follow you. Thank you for all these tips today. Blessings❤

When do you start transitioning to CVC words? The phonics program I use starts almost right away. M, A, and T are the first three letters introduced and start reading and writing CVC words after T is introduced. However the other kindergarten teachers I work with don’t start CVC words until all the letters are introduced.
@learningattheprimarypond
@learningattheprimarypond Жыл бұрын
Great question. Usually after a couple of weeks (even if students have only learned a handful of letters/letter sounds), I start modeling the process of blending VC and CVC words. You can definitely have them try with the letters they've learned thus far! Here's a free scope/sequence where I lay out the order of things: www.learningattheprimarypondresources.com/k-2-phonics-scope-sequence-freebie

I have a couple of kindergartners who are unable to do onset/rime activities. Ive started first by modeling the activity: show my right palm (mirror image) and say /h/, then left palm for 'at'. Then clap hands and I'll say 'hat'. Ive done that for several days, then I've tried to have them guess words on their own that I break up into onset/rime, and they are not able guess the word. I try to say the 2 parts closer and closer together and theyll say words that may rhyme or just guess words. I may say "I don't want a rhyming word, i want you to tell me what word I'm saying...put the 2 parts together". I just wondered if the kids are missing a link? Do I just model this and let them copy me with these activities longer? I just am scratching my head!
@learningattheprimarypond
@learningattheprimarypond Жыл бұрын
Hey! This is such a great question - onset and rime can be really tricky. A couple of thoughts - yes, I agree about continuing to model and letting them copy you. But also, know that phoneme blending and segmentation has been shown to be more important to getting them reading and spelling words. If they can identify the first sound in a word, I don't worry too too much about the onset and rime work! I hope this helps!

As a kindergarten teacher i have kids who know the letter sounds but can not blend. Just a quick question what do you start teaching kids, alpahabet letters or letter sounds? I have notice most kids struggle to differentiate the two and they get confused when you want them to blend

Great question! When I introduce the letter and sound, I like to use a multisensory approach where students are doing some sort of air writing to trace the letter or tracing it in sand/gel. I do this before ever actually having them write the letter with a pencil!

@learningattheprimarypond
@learningattheprimarypond 10 ай бұрын
Is he able to orally say sentences that tell a story? (For instance, he could tell a story about his day.) What about responding to a writing prompt? (Like tell me about a time when you felt happy.) I'd provide a bit more structure! And then when it comes to writing, just have him to a quick sketch in pencil to accompany the writing. He can simply do that and label it too instead of writing for now.

I’m a tutor and my student is a kindergartner. She repeats the blending sounds but when ask her to follow the arrow and say the whole word, she doesn’t. She freezes up and still says the sounds. I’ve tried movement and illustrations. I’ve tried telling her to stretch the word but she still just says the sounds. What should I do? I think we need to go back to phonemic awareness.
@learningattheprimarypond
@learningattheprimarypond 5 ай бұрын
I think you're spot on to suggest going back to phonemic awareness. Sometimes just blending with the sounds (without letters!) will help solidify that process. You could also have her just blend two sounds at a time in CVC words or even just VC words too. Let me know how it goes!
