Many adults were never taught the difference between open and closed syllables! But it can actually be a really important concept to teach students. Want to know why?
In this video, I’ll explain why as well as the difference between open and closed syllables. I’ll also tell you about 3 different activities you can use when practicing this concept with your K-2 students.

I have been teaching these in my sessions for the past few weeks. It's so helpful (I also purchased your syllables packet) with helping them to graduate towards decoding multisyllabic words. I created a dramatic story using the house doors for my NYC students. But this topic is SOOOO NEEDED!! Thank You!

This was a perfect video- taught the concept to the teacher (me) and then DEMONSTRATED how to teach the concept to the teacher (me)! The visuals are very helpful to me. Saving to come back to take notes.

Curious if you currently teach types of syllables in your classroom. Let me know in the comments if “yes” you teach them or “no” you don’t.

Hi! The word river would be divided like this: riv/er, making the first syllable a closed one (closed syllables typically have short vowel sounds, like the short i). Tiger, on the other hand, can be divided like this: ti/ger, making the first syllable open and therefore have the long sound for i. I hope this helps!

She asked a great question! Then, how would students know where to break the word if they didn't know the word?

I've seen some fluency drills/activities where students first go through and identify all of the open syllables and then they get timed on how many they can read per minute. Could be a fun twist for some kids!

Hey, literacy specialist: the "t" in "often" is silent. Do you say sof-ten? Lis-ten? Glis-ten? Fas-ten?
