Out with the old paradigm, in with the new… Internal Focus vs External Focus in ball-striking

The primary difference between the old paradigm and the new one is where golfers’ focus their attention. In the old paradigm, the focus is on the body and trying to get it to behave in a bio-mechanically “correct” fashion with the assumption that the clubhead will do what it is supposed to if the swing is bio-mechanically correct. In the new paradigm, golfers focus their minds and intentions on the skillful use of the clubhead, with their bodies’ bio-mechanical movements and positions occurring naturally and instinctively in response to the player’s intention of what s/he desires to accomplish with the ball, with the club acting as a tool to accomplish the goal and the body simply moves in whatever way it needs to in response to those intentions.
At this point you might be thinking, “Hardly anybody in the modern golf instruction industry talks about the concepts of this ‘new paradigm’ that you’ve proposed: How do you know that they an accurate explanation of what is really going on in the learning process of these ‘elite’ golfers? Also, you claim that the concepts of the modern golf instruction paradigm - the ‘old’ paradigm - are actually pseudo-scientific and lacking in any real scientific validation. Do your concepts have any ‘real’ scientific validity?”
Funny you should ask these questions! In this post, we will see how science supports the new modern golf instruction paradigm... and refutes the old. We will take a look at the pioneering work of University of Nevada Las Vegas research scientist Dr. Gabriele Wulf in the field of motor skill acquisition. Her research findings regarding the most effective approach to learning motor skills in various sport disciplines including golf are rather eye opening to say the least!

Dear Ron, I see you as "lone voice in the wilderness". The old paradigm makes a living for many thousends of golf teachers all over the world and we millions of amateur golfers are just hooked to it. You won't move that mountain. But nevertheless your new paradigm truely makes the difference where it "falls on good soil". I believe it did in my case. Thank you so much. Alles Gute für dich und deine Kinder.

Very well explained. It’s interesting 🤔 how our brains have become trained in the “old paradigm” to become so internally focused. I’m appreciative of teachers like yourself and Shawn Clement for helping “individuals” swing their own swing. Dr. Wulf is a brilliant teacher as well!

I think what this pro is getting at is that good golfers hit the shots they want from instinct that comes years of experience practicing those shots, not from trying to perform certain body mechanics. I agree with his philosopy.

Makes a lot of sense. I think for persons who have a natural aptitude and coordination for the game will benefit greatly from this approach as their bodies will get proper feedback from the brain. For the rest? Well, I guess it is a brain/body link breakdown that is the problem no matter what teaching paradigm is applied. So with that in mind, this still makes great sense to me!

This makes a lot of sense and I'm surprised I didn't apply it to golf since I tend to do this sort of thing for every other game I play. Like, I noticed I do my best when I'm not focused on all the little aspects of things and just sort of go into an "autopilot" mode regarding what I want to happen. Granted that isn't something you instantly can get into just because you think about it persay, but it's something developed by getting a feel for whatever it is you're doing because you adjust to things the way you need to adjust to them for yourself without entirely thinking about what you did to adjust. I guess in the case of golf, I let all the "tips" floating around influence how my play style developed because they made me think I needed to do so-and-so things for consistency so I focused on them each time I hit. So I'm definitely going to have to try this!

Played today, hit all balls with your method and was amazed at how well the ball flew. Only the driver went left 7 times, what do we do about that as I cant find any driver instruction? Played 1 stroke under my handicap,87 on a rain soaked wind stripped course, its winter in NZ and did not think of any mechanics from the past. This is the future.

I'm glad I stumbled across this video. I'm a ice hockey player myself down here in the States and know I'm comfortable with a stick in my hand. My problem has been the 'old paradigm' mentality. When I play ice hockey, I'm not thinking of my form when I take a slapshot. My focus is just to strike the puck as hard as possible with one, fluid motion and put it where I'm aiming at. Why not the same in golf? I'm aiming to be like the kid you talked to instead of the mom who's thoughts were preoccupied with bio-mechanics.

+muscles662988 I wonder why the fairly lightweight former-Red Wing Jason Williams was able to teach a few good Finnish players how to fire a nice slapshot plenty faster and more accurately than before on his 1-year stay in Finland? He taught solid mechanics and moved the thoughts into feel. Translating proper mechanics into feeling and action is the way to go. Physics will never lie.

What I find with various golf instructors is, that they can quite easily get someone with extremely high handicap to improve significantly, but they cannot get them further than that. Most get stuck at single digits handicap and no coach in the world can change that. It takes natural ability and individual talent to get to scratch. Most golfers who consider themselves scratch golfers are not really scratch golfers.

I get it. Thanks. The conventional approach is a break-down/rebuild of the observed motion of better players. Our biomechanics are similar enough that this often works, but the brain can be overwhelmed with concepts--especially for the novice and FLUID goes right out the window. I'll have no trouble adapting as I long ago learned the "old paradigm" so know how it feels to be spot on, and to work the ball. After my 20 years off, your new paradigm may be a quicker ticket to building strength and reliability back into my swing. Freeing up the mind is a good thing.

Wow, cool stuff!! I really like the idea of a free swinging motion but have a question about the hand/eye coordination aspect. I'm a big fan of George Knudson who also had a very free flowing action but in his book he repeatedly says that golf if not a hand/eye game but a movement of our body in motion toward the target. He says he even shot a 67 with his eyes closed on full shots! Just wondering what you think about his approach? Thanks!!

You do not get the chance on the course to rake in another ball and fire. The game demands high success with each shot. This is what creates tension and anxiety . The two things that engage our thoughts thus influencing the outcome of the shot! This is why pros spend hours on a pre shot routine. Most of us don't really like structure . Moe Norman said he was free as a bird swinging the club yet he looked like a twisted pretzel at address. Good luck to all the warriors!!

As Ben Hogan said in Power Golf: every instinct in you when over the golf ball is wrong! As big Jack would say - 'what are you trying to achieve with the club'. You need to undo what your body wants to do. See the SwingDuke. It will put you into a perfectly engineered swingpath without thinking about it. Biolearning!

The concept of external focus may be a good way to learn. However I disagree that this is in any way a new idea. Good teachers have been using external focus for many years . I have videos of the renowned teacher John Jacobs giving a teaching clinic many years ago. In the lessons nearly all of the instruction is telling the pupils where the club needs to go, an not about what the body or arms needs to do. A good player not clearing his hips enough and hooking the ball was just told to swing the club a few degrees left through impact ,and his hips cleared automatically.A slicer with a steep swing was told to imagine the ball is above his feet on the side of a hill when making his backswing.

The more bio-mechanical lessons I take, the less I feel the club head, my proprioception goes away and hit crap shots. Was getting into single digits and now I am going backwards when I am thinking inwards. I know my mistakes and end up thinking about what I need to do to correct them. Not a fun way to play golf...now I am critiquing my kid, who had a great swing at 6, and he is mis-hitting more balls.

Rory also had lessons from a very early age which just made the most of natural abilities. What you seem to be suggesting, is that hack amateurs just need to really think about hitting their golf ball as far as they want and it will happen. Therefore, based on a visit to any driving range, all these people trying really hard to hit the ball well, are just not thinking properly. Never heard such nonsense.

I've never had lessons, I just picked up a driver that a friend at work was hitting and I hit a golf ball, it went as straight as any shot I've ever hit. Then I started playing and looking at magazine tips and that crap didn't help a bit. I just went to the range one day and started hitting the ground and watching where my club was hitting on a natural swing, it hit the same spot every time, then I placed a ball there, boom straight shot. If you over think it you will never be a good golfer. Everyone has their own swing, none are the same, obviously you want to be close to something respectable but it will never look like Hogan or Tiger. If you haven't noticed Tiger was swinging like a pro when he was very very young. You can't teach a child to swing like that, it comes naturally and then you just tweak it .

JustJames: Despite revolutionary advances in golf equipment technology and golf course agronomy, despite more and more detailed kinesthetic and data-driven application of research in teaching the golf swing, amateur handicaps haven't improved in 50+ years. If not this new paradigm, then some other new paradigm is obviously needed. You shouldn't dismiss it as nonsense unless you have a better idea. Ron's isn't a lone voice. Brian Sparks' Positive Impact Golf, Fred Shoemaker's Extraordiary Golf, and W. Timothy Gallwey's Inner Game of Golf all echo the point Ron is making here, and all have had a great influence.

You are comparing apples to oranges when it comes to Tour players and the rest of the golfers (including teaching pros!). You are trying to sound scientific and simplify this movement, but it is not! Recognize that great athletes in ANY hitting or throwing sport, not only have great hand eye coordination, they also have a body awareness that is far superior to the rest that allows them to focus their intent on the task at hand (striking the ball, etc.). When athletes start at a very young age as you aptly state, they develop the internal body skills (primarily balance which helps develop good hand eye coordination) that allow them to move efficiently resulting in the desired sport task outcome. I notice in your swing great lower body stability and weight transfer which allows you to control your ball flight because the club can move freely. Stand on ice and I guarantee you won't hit the ball the same. This is what high handicap players experience every swing. No matter how much they focus on hitting the ball with club, the brain always reverts to its primary task first when standing, maintaining balance! I think much of what you say has validity, until you state "I believe". Nothing I have written has to do with what I believe, it is all physics, human biomechanics and motor movement. You are on the right track though! Thanks for sharing.

This is what I don't get. There ARE proven techniques or "biomechanics" that aid in improving whatever result you want. Things that a first time golfer probably isn't doing. I understand that focusing on these techniques during the swing can hinder its fluidity. BUT, like you mentioned, at some point you can turn those techniques into muscle memory, thereby achieving fluidity. So the question becomes, are the modern bio-mechanical techniques full of hot air, do they really have no benefit in terms of maximizing desired results? This is under the assumption that every technique is already part of your muscle memory.
