Stumbled across this by accident. I'm always amazed when I watch professionals at the top of their games. The guy was out there in a sweater and collard shirt and not an ounce of cement went anywhere except exactly where he wanted it to. Amazing talent...

WOW! This guy is good! One of the most important points that he makes concerns furrowing. Although furrowing is taught, practiced, and accepted as the "right" way to lay mortar, he explains exactly why furrowing is forbidden by many architects and engineers. Just remember, neither bricks nor mortar are water proof. Both bricks and water absorb water. If anyone ever tells you that you need to furrow your mortar, just refer to the points that he makes: 1.) Furrowing does not fill the holes in the brick, and 2.) It creates a horizontal void that is ideal for collecting water, which is exactly what destroys brick work over time -- especially in areas of the country where we have a melting and freezing cycle in the same day (Colorado, Wyoming, Montana --- places that I have lived and worked). The water collects in the day time, then it freezes at night. This causes the water to freeze and expand, which then causes the joints to crack, which then lets in more water, which eventually leads to crumbling of the brick work.

This guy does everything the same as we did including the setup, layout, and bricklaying. We did our ties a little different- bend tie at hole near end less than 90 degrees- place on top of wall -tie will extend beyond face so it needs to be bent back making sure that completed bend is 1/2” inside of face of joint- remove from top of wall and hammer bend flat. Make up several the same way on setup plank. Use 8 galvanized nail and locate nail slightly above brick and drive slightly downhill. When nail is too high tie will flex.

Nice looking compo. It's quite different to how we do it in the UK and I don't concur with the furrowing point as I have never seen voids in beds due to it, but the job is great. Clean, plumb perps, nice brick and mortar.

Many years ago I lived in a brick house built in 1948. The brick was backed with veneer block wich was also set on the top of the foundation. The only problem was the small front porch and steps. The joints failed and I had to clean the bricks and relay them. That chore took me two or three days because I had never used mortar before. I dropped the steps about 1/4" to the front so water would drain out. 55 years later the bricks are still holding.

One thing for sure when I was doing this type of work, I was a lot healthier and a lot stronger working outdoors with this type of work. Then found a desk job and health begin to decline. So those cinchy desk jobs may sound good but in hindsight this type of work is way better for body and your mental stability.

Great teacher and entertaining to watch. I thought the furrowing was to provide two 'edges' for the brick to lay on, better than laying on a hump! But I take onboard the comment about why the frog is there, even though I reckon the trapped air would prevent full engagement of the mortar with the frog.
