Leather Upholstery Tutorial for antique rocking chairs and Morris Chairs. How to sewing red leather seat cushion for rocker / rocking chair. Learn to upholster in leather. Do you have a Gustav Stickley, Charles Limbert, or King Craft rocker you'd like to try your hand at upholstering? Here's the perfect DIY how-to tutorial! There are many sewing how to videos, but fewer upholstery videos. Even fewer videos cover leather upholstery techniques. Many of the techniques are similar to fabric and upholstery material, but there are additional points to remember when working with leather. You'll need a few key tools, like a sharp pair of leather shears and perhaps a walking foot sewing machine. But hey, if you don't own an industrial sewing machine, perhaps you could borrow one, or take a project based class. Follow along as Willie Sandry aka the Thoughtful Woodworker and the Thoughtful Upholsterer show how to cover your rocker or Morris chair with beautiful red leather. Red leather isn't for everyone, buy you get to choose your own colors! Here's where to buy this beautiful leather... www.leatherhidestore.com/
Mine is the Charlotte Burgundy (Burgundy Rose) color. Have fun and good luck! Also check out part 2 and 3 of this series for the backrest and ottoman upholstery.

That’s so helpful. Upholstery shops have all but disappeared from many communities now. So a DIY is what I would need to do. Thanks

I've been looking for a resource like this for an old rocking chair that I want to refinish...thank you! Do you have a supply list for this project? Where do you get your leather?

Thanks, I'm glad you found some useful info. I buy my leather from LeatherHideStore.com They have a great selection of top grain and full grain leather hides, half hides and remnants. $105 single hides are on special right now (full hide but only one available in that color). Shipping is very reasonable. Foam I buy locally at In-EX Upholstery supplies. Batting is from Joanne's Fabric. Deck pad is from Fabric Farm Interiors. Good luck with it!!!

I found a Stratford Chair Co. (Furniture manufacturer from Ontario Canada) Mission-style chair…..circa 1910-1920. The quartersawn oak frame in exceptional shape….obviously the fabric was far gone, along with original moldy batten and horsehair stuffing. After stripping and disposing the fabric and cushioning material, I gave the frame a good cleaning and light sanding, a light staining, and now finalizing the finish. The chair is sound….and I’m prepping to recover in leather. Question 1: why did you attach the top batting material separately from the side sections. Question 2: my chair’s seatback had only slim, loose fitted slats. They are not worth keeping, so while I considered replacing them with zig zag springs, I am now leaning towards interweave strap-webbing….does this make sense? (I will be using thick foam as well….similar to what you did with the seat cushion). Should I create new slats…or does my other idea make sense? Great video….incredibly informative….I’ve just subscribed.

Sounds like you've got a neat project chair. I use separate batting on the sides because I find it lays better, and is easier to get the final shape. I used to keep the batting one piece, and pull it down to staple it under the seat frame. I just found it too bulky. As far as the backrest, I'd go with webbing. I can't imagine zig zag springs on the backrest of a mission chair. These old chairs are worth preserving, so have fun with your project!

The deck pad is like a dense batting. I get it from Fabric Farm Interiors. A reasonable substitute is office carpet runners from Walmart. The hog rings you can find at any Upholstery supply store online. Thanks

I have a question that may be obvious to more experienced do-it-yourselfers. How do you measure the length of the side panels? The height is demonstrated, but not the actual length of the side panel.
@TheThoughtfulWoodworker
@TheThoughtfulWoodworker 2 жыл бұрын
Carol, that's a good question. Couple ways to measure the side panels. You can measure the cushion itself, then add 1/2" seam allowance on both ends. But what I've been doing lately is make a pattern for the side panels. See my Stickley #319 rocking chair upholstery videos for that technique. There are three videos in the 319 rocker series. One covers wood repair, one shows seat cushion upholstery, and the third is how to make the backrest cushion.
