Joe shows how the notch in the wire cutters in the new Leatherman Arc multi tool is a disappointment and doesn’t belong on a premium tool, especially because Leatherman does not disclose this modification to the Free series Multitool platform anywhere on their packaging. These tools used to cut concrete nails and now coat hanger wire will destroy their function.

Maybe title it the replaceable cutters broke, and not the “pliers” or “multi tool”. You know because if the cutters break or dull or whatever they are meant to be replaced, implying that you damaged or broke the whole tool is scummy. Is this an issue with the design of these cutters? Yes, it would be a lot bigger deal if they weren’t replaceable, but they are.

I am experiencing some binding on the plier head as well. Whenever I cut something the pivot stiffens up and gets harder to move. I think it’s breaking in slightly, but for what I paid I want a plier head that doesn’t bind!

You can tell they changed the geometry of the cutter insert. The radius on the bottom of the cutter insert on the P4 is around 0.015", while the radius of the cutter insert on the ARC is around 0.063". This is definitely an issue for Leatherman and they need to address, and the answer better not involve making the customer buy "update" cutter inserts.

What's even more weird is that not everyone gets the same cutters either, calling back to your previous shorts I commented on. I did show this video, Maxlvledc's and Hvac Budget's ones to a co-worker whom got the Arc the same time and same place as I did who has the curved/new cutters and his did break after cutting a coat hanger 4 times. Again, I don't have these cutters but I have not cut anything yet.

Thank you very much! By your review you saved me more than simply the price of the knife. I wanted to buy this knife because of these pliers and wire cutters. I expected it is going to be reliable. It is not! I am disappointed. I will check P4 and SURGE model but this particular model ARC is definitely unreliable. I will be more cautious now after watching these review. Thanks once again !

My charge TTI got a new plier head recently under warranty (was from 2009, so had regular cutters). The new head (TTI+ one) with replacable wirecutters has the same gap there..

How sad. I may have to video tape cutting hard wire and send it to Leatherman with the arc to just get it replaced. Mine are defective, i pointed this issue out to HVAC.

What knife is that at the top of the screen? Also, I have seen comments on other videos that the same cutters are showing up on new batches of surges and waves as well, so it appears these may be a new make all together.

A standard wire coat hanger does not count as 'hard' wire. Not even close. These cutter heads are DEFECTIVE in the extreme!

Obviously a design flaw. I hope replace the cutters for free for anyone that bought an Arc. It should be able to cut a coat hanger as that is what they are made to do.

Coat hangers aren't hard wire. They're literally fencing wire like I used on the ranch growing up. Even Gerber's bunk carbide cutters could cut that stuff with ease

Here in the UK, a Leatherman Wave costs about £100.00 and the ARC is nearly £300.00 Why would anyone even think about buying an ARC at nearly three times the cost of the Wave.

I tried this with my signal topo after seeing this and I either scrapped the finish off and left some weird marks, or I aswell damaged the cutters…. I bought it earlier this summer

The Arc and P4 use the same pliers head. The cutter inserts are the only difference.

Ordered batch of ARC + Signal leathermans, both arrived with bad rounded cutters. Asked leatherman a month ago, but they still didn't answer me.

I just checked my 12 month old Wave+ and it has the exact same flaw in the cutters. Glad I never tried to cut a coat hanger! And now I will never try it. My Bibury knockoff has perfect cutters so.....

I had to same scare, checked my fairly 2 month old shelf surge.. defective gap in it same as my heavily engraved Arc.. I also have a Victorianox Cs Plus.. which is absolutely flawless and perfect with a lifetime warranty. So I learned what tools are right and which isn't. End of the day, I own a magnacut blade and maybe I can make it all worth it someday.

From what others have said and in my own collection it appears the older replaceable cutters do not have a huge gap. It must be a recent redesign that isn’t working out

It sucks to see that they bothered to make enough components of this tool here in the US only to have so many glaring QC issues. I was hoping Leatherman would do better after the Free P2/4 but I’m not impressed with the pliers. Every other tool is great, but the point of the pliers-based tool is the pliers!

I had issues with the cutters and my plier head is binding with every cut. So both components.

My brand new Arc that I just got the other day also came with a pretty significant chip in the Magnacut blade. I'm debating between just returning and giving up on this release...or trying to work with them and see if they'll replace the blade and wire cutters. I'm not a "collector", i was specifically waiting for a multi-tool with a super steel knive, so I can replace my carry knife with a multi-tool. I was hoping the ARC would be that multi-tool. So I'm extremely disappointed...

Sorry to hear that because this is a very useful blade. Seems like my particular Arc had multiple pliers problems but the other tools are fine. Crazy to pay that much to receive a chipped blade though!

@@inkiron3907It's not just your ARC with the cutter issues. Maxlvledc also broke his cutters while talking about them and commenting on your video. He broke them right on video, same as yours, cutting some hanger wire. He mentions some other people have done the same. So this is now a repeatable known issue. I have no idea what Leatherman were thinking, or who is responsible for the QC, but someone dropped the ball hard on this release. To be honest, another thing that pisses me off about this ARC release is the overall design of the Magnacut blade. On the P5 Garage Release it is a much thicker overall blade (except Cerakoted instead of smooth DLC, which is a ridiculous coating to put on a knife blade). They should've kept the overall steel thickness the same, just DLC'd it like they did, and I think the result would've been a much more utilitarian blade. The problem I have with overall thickness on the ARC, is that generally the harder super steels are great with most things, except that they're usually more brittle due to the hardness and steel composition. When you go super thin with the profile, you risk snapping the blade if you put any significant tension sideways on the blade.

I'm in the same boat. Bought it to put into my compact tool kit for the bike. Now I don't trust the thing to build a box fort for my nephew. My blade was so severely unfinished that it wouldn't cut paracord when I got it, the frame flexes like an Ozark trail, and now I've seen six videos about the wire cutters being even worse than Gerber's carbide cutters

@@dualsportedcI'm curious where and what directions you're seeing frame flex? I didn't get that in mine, but I also didn't play around with it too much (once I saw the chipped blade, I put it back in the box). I did notice how uneven the grind was on my blade as well though. Considering we're paying $100+ just for that little piece of Magnacut steel, I hoped they'd at least treat it right and take care with it.

@@dualsportedcIt also seems like the actual frame on both handles is pretty thin metal. Yes they attach the stainless "scales" to either side to add thickness, but they're not really a structural element for the frame or the toolset held inside. Why not just skip the scales, and make the actual frame thicker?

Hi. I've noticed that my Surge 2022 and my Charge TTi 2022 already have this bigger radius and this gap between both cutters. Not sure about the material, if it's the same or not. But it means that it could be a way more serious problem than just an Arc design flaws! It could be a generalized flaw on a new generation of cutters that already equip all Leatherman models recently produced!... 🤕 Can you investigate?

I would argue they charge more for the FREE system as manufacturing it and the neodymium magnets likely add production cost and additional steps/labor. Also higher American labor/cost percentage.

I was just wondering if the replaceable hard wire cutting blades on the Leatherman Free P4 are interchangeable with the new Leatherman Arc🤔 If you could replace the flawed designed hard wire cutters(with gap) on the Leatherman Arc with the hard wire cutter blades of the Leatherman P4(no gap), wouldn't that solve this issue?

Did you cut the wire pushed all the way in until it bottomed out, or did you make sure to aim the wire in only touching the hard wire cutter? Just trying to see if this is a problem with the heat treat or that radiused corner.

As a Leatherman victim of not one but two and the only two Leathermans i own, it makes me laugh watching you break it. Its Leathermans fault for defective tools but i still get a kick out of it knowing if i do that mine breaks the same cause i have the defect as shown in my profile pic.

Unless all the replacements are the same because of a new manufacturing process or supplier. Then all the replacements will be of the same quality.

Guess what, his video didn't have a click bait title and it got like 4x the views yours did. Proving my point, he still did all the capital letters bull shit to draw attention. But instead of a misleading title he drew attention to the ACTUAL defect of the tool. If you can't take criticism maybe you shouldn't have a KZfaq channel.
